And we made ordinances to bring…the firstfruits of our dough.

Nehemiah 10:34-39
The people in Nehemiah 10 agreed to honor God by giving Him the firstfruits of their produce and income, including, in verse 37, the firstfruits of their dough. We should do the same. Of course, in Nehemiah’s day the word “dough” was literal. They harvested their crops, ground their grain, and brought the first portions of their dough to the Lord. In this way, they worshiped God and also provided for the needs of those tending His temple.
Since the mid-1800s, dough has been a slang word for money (we use it to buy bread), so it’s appropriate for us to emulate the example of those of Nehemiah’s day. When we bring God the first portions and the tithe of our income, we’re worshipping Him and acknowledging Him as the source of every blessing. We’re also providing for His work and workers. When we tithe, we bless the church. What a difference it would make if God’s people would simply bring Him the firstfruits of their “dough.”
Whatever your situation, may the Lord enable you to begin at once. He will bless you for it—and others through you.
If every Christian would tithe, the church would begin to make an impact on the world that would change it.
