The Navigators – Leroy Eims – Daily Discipleship Devotional – Hearing God’s Call

Today’s Scripture: Isaiah 5-8

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. – Romans 5:1-2

“Here am I, send me.” The prophet Isaiah first spoke those words in the year King Uzziah died. King Uzziah was a man greatly used of God, until pride captured his heart and the Lord set him aside. It was after his death that Isaiah saw the Lord, high and lifted up, surrounded by angels who were saying, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of His glory” (Isaiah 6:3, KJV).

When Isaiah found himself in the presence of the holy God, his heart melted within him, and he cried, “Woe to me! I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty” (6:4). Isaiah was overwhelmed by God’s sovereignty, power, and holiness.

Then the Lord spoke to him, giving assurance that Isaiah’s sin was forgiven and his iniquity purged, and asked the questions: “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”

Have you seen this pattern in God’s call? “In the year that King Uzziah died…” God often speaks to us in times of great personal crisis and transition. It seems we’re often more attentive to His voice during those hard times.

“I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted.” Isaiah saw God’s holiness and majesty, and his own unworthiness.

“Your guilt is taken away.” After Isaiah experienced God’s forgiveness, he was free to answer God’s call.

If God is calling you for some special service, you will find no greater joy than to answer, “Here am I, send me.”

Prayer

Lord, here am I, send me. Amen.

To Ponder

How will you be able to tell if God is calling you?
