The Navigators – Jerry Bridges – Holiness Day by Day Devotional – Grace and a Grateful Heart

Today’s Scripture: 2 Corinthians 8:9

“You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Living under the grace of God instead of under a sense of duty frees us from a self-serving motivation. It frees us to obey God and serve him as a loving and thankful response to him for our salvation and for blessings already guaranteed to us by his grace. Consequently, a heartfelt grasp of God’s grace—far from creating an indifferent or careless attitude in us—will actually provide us the only motivation that is pleasing to him. Only when we’re thoroughly convinced that the Christian life is entirely of grace are we able to serve him out of a grateful and loving heart.

I knew a man who was a strict tither, giving exactly 10 percent of his income to God’s work: never one penny less and, as far as I know, never one penny more. I asked him why he did this. He replied, “I’d be afraid not to.” I knew this man fairly well, and I suspect his motivation was mixed. He did somewhat enjoy giving his 10 percent, but his basic motivation was a fear of the consequences if he did not tithe. He was not motivated to tithe from a joyful and grateful heart.

By contrast, the apostle Paul appealed to Christ’s grace as a motivation to give: “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9). Paul wasn’t “laying a guilt trip” on the Corinthian believers. Rather, he wanted them not only to give generously but to give from a sense of gratitude for God’s grace—as a cheerful, loving response to what God had already given them in Christ.

Today’s Scripture: Daniel 1-3

They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. – Daniel 6:4

Daniel was a young man who, from the world’s point of view, “had it all.” Before the fall of Jerusalem, he was a member of the royal family in Israel. When he was taken captive to Babylon, he was selected for special training in the court of the Babylonian king. Daniel 1:4 describes the qualifications of Daniel and the others selected for this training: “Young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace.”

What a list! I’m sure any major corporation in the world would have been delighted to hire one of these men and make him part of the organization. But other than Daniel and three of his friends, we don’t even know their names. Why? Because they apparently lacked the one major characteristic God looks for, and that He found in Daniel and the other three–a commitment to holiness in the sight of God.

The Navigators – Jerry Bridges – Holiness Day by Day Devotional – What Is Your Intention?

Today’s Scripture: Romans 12:1

“I appeal to you . . . to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God.”

How do we respond to the challenge to commitment—to present our bodies as living sacrifices; to, as it were, take an oath to obey God’s righteous laws; to resolve to allow no exceptions to our obedience? I suspect all of us think first of the impossibility of totally keeping such a commitment. And we’re reluctant to make a commitment we know we won’t keep. But the question still persists: are we willing to make that our aim, our goal in life? Are we willing to commit ourselves to a goal of obedience without exception? Such a commitment is necessary if we are to make progress in the pursuit of holiness.

Today’s Scripture: Ezekiel 44-48

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me–put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. – Philippians 4:8-9

In Ezekiel 44:23, God gave this command to the priests of the sanctuary: “They are to teach my people the difference between the holy and the common [profane] and show them how to distinguish between the unclean and the clean.” Note carefully that the priests were to teach the people, not simply tell them. It’s the difference between telling a person what to avoid and helping him learn why he should refrain from things that displease the Lord.

The Navigators – Jerry Bridges – Holiness Day by Day Devotional – From Curse to Christ

Today’s Scripture: Galatians 3:24

“The law was our guardian until Christ came.”

The primary purpose of the law is not to curse us but to lead us to Christ (Galatians 3:24). God does not take pleasure in the death of the wicked (Ezekiel 18:23). Rather, “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us” (Galatians 3:13). The language is emphatic. Christ literally became a curse in our place as our substitute. He experienced the full fury of the curse that we should have experienced. It’s true he did it for us, but he did so by doing it in our place as our appointed substitute.

Here we see the importance of our legal union with Christ. As our God-appointed legal representative, he was legally qualified to endure the curse in our place as our substitute. There’s no adequate analogy for this union in human experience. One person may pay a financial debt for someone else, but no one can serve a prison sentence as a substitute for another. In human jurisprudence, a moral debt such as a prison sentence can be served only by the person who incurred it.

Today’s Scripture: Jeremiah 50-52

We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. – Hebrews 2:1

In the last chapters of Jeremiah, God is trying to get the attention of Babylon and warn the people that if they continue to follow their current lifestyle, the curtain will fall and the show will be over.

In Jeremiah 51:33, we find an example of God’s warning: “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor at the time it is trampled; the time to harvest her will soon come.’” The Babylonians did not heed the warning, and in the years to come, the prophecies of Babylon’s shocking destruction were all fulfilled.

What are the warnings you and I must not ignore in our walk of daily discipleship? What are the signs that we may be getting sidetracked from the Lord’s plan for our lives? Is it getting easier to skip a daily quiet time of prayer and Bible reading? Are we passing up opportunities to share our faith with others? What about our prayer life and our thoughts?

The Navigators – Jerry Bridges – Holiness Day by Day Devotional – Contentment

Today’s Scripture: Philippians 4:11

“I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.”

There’s a place for legitimate discontentment. All of us should, to some degree, be discontent with our spiritual growth. If we aren’t, we will stop growing. There’s also what we might call a prophetic discontentment with injustice and other evils in society, coupled with a desire to see positive change. But there’s also a sinful discontentment that negatively affects our relationship with God. It can easily lead to resentment or bitterness toward God or other people.

Whatever situation tempts us to be discontent, and however severe it may be, we need to recognize that discontentment is sin. We’re so used to responding to difficult circumstances with anxiety, frustration, or discontentment that we consider them normal reactions to the varying vicissitudes of life. But that just points out the subtleness and acceptability of these sins. When we fail to recognize these responses to our circumstances as sin, we’re responding no differently from unbelievers who never factor God into their situations. We’re back to our ungodliness as the root cause of our sins.

The Navigators – Leroy Eims – Daily Discipleship Devotional – Beyond Good Intentions

Today’s Scripture: Nehemiah 11-13

“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.” – John 13:13

Back in Nehemiah 9:38, we find a group of people who made a binding agreement and put in writing their intention to keep the Law of the Lord. They had searched God’s Law to find out what it taught, then searched their own hearts to discover where they were falling short. After listing a number of things that were examples of their failures, they put in writing exactly what they were going to do about it.

Written applications should be part of every Bible study. As we see where we fall short or receive a new challenge in following the Lord, we should write down what we plan to do about it. But that’s not enough. In Nehemiah 13, we see that the people got off to a great start by putting their intentions in writing, but stumbled in putting them into practice.

The Navigators – Jerry Bridges – Holiness Day by Day Devotional – Knowing Our Motives

Today’s Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:7

“The Lord looks on the heart.”

Our motivation for commitment, discipline, and obedience is as important to God as our performance, perhaps even more so. As Ernest F. Kevan wrote, “The law’s demands are inward, touching motive and desire, and are not concerned solely with outward action.”

David said, “The Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought” (1 Chronicles 28:9). The apostle Paul echoed the importance of motives when he wrote that, at the Lord’s coming, he “will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart” (1 Corinthians 4:5).

To be acceptable to God, our motives must spring from a love for him and a desire to glorify him. Obedience performed from a legalistic motive—from fear of consequences or to gain favor with God—is not pleasing to him. Abraham Booth (1734?806), an English pastor and author, wrote, “To constitute a work truly good, it must be done from a right principle, performed by a right rule, and intended for a right end.” Booth defined a right principle as our love for God. He defined the right rule as God’s revealed will in Scripture. The right end—the right goal—is the glory of God.

Our good works are not truly good unless they’re motivated by a love for God and a desire to glorify him. But we cannot have such a Godward motivation if we think we must earn God’s favor by our obedience or if we fear we may forfeit his favor by disobedience. Such a works-oriented motivation is essentially self-serving, prompted more by what we think we gain or lose than by a grateful response to the grace he has already given us through Jesus Christ.

Today’s Scripture: Ezra 7-8

In everything that he undertook in the service of God’s temple and in obedience to the law and the commands, he sought his God and worked wholeheartedly. And so he prospered. – 2 Chronicles 31:21

Have you ever looked at someone who was being used by God in a special way and wondered why the Lord seems to have His hand on that man or woman? Why is God using that person and not someone else? What is the secret of their spiritual success?

Ezra 7:9 says of Ezra, “The gracious hand of his God was upon him.” And the reason is found in the next verse: “For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the Lord, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel.”

The Navigators – Jerry Bridges – Holiness Day by Day Devotional – No Exceptions

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 61:5

“You, O God, have heard my vows.”

Commitment to the pursuit of holiness is, first of all, a commitment to God to pursue a way of life that is pleasing to him. It is commitment to a life of obedience. Such a commitment must allow for no exceptions, no secret sins we want to hold onto, no sinful habits we’re unwilling to give up. We must make it our aim not to sin.

This doesn’t mean we can arrive at sinless perfection in this life, for even our best deeds are stained with sin. But it does mean that our firm intention must be not to sin willfully. Commitment to a life of holiness without exception is a requirement for consistently making the right choices. There’s no point in praying for God’s help in the face of temptation if we haven’t made a commitment to obedience without exception.

The Navigators – Leroy Eims – Daily Discipleship Devotional – Jehoshaphat’s Example

Today’s Scripture: 2 Chronicles 17-20

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. – Colossians 2:6

When I was growing up on a farm in Iowa, we had a neighbor who, every time something unusual or exciting happened, would shout “Jumpin’ Jehoshaphat!” But a reading of 2 Chronicles 17-20 lets us know that Jehoshaphat was not known for his ability in jumping, but for his walk with God.

He wisely took precautions to fortify the land against invasion. But more than that, he walked in the ways of David, his father. And even here Jehoshaphat was selective, following the positive example of David while avoiding his weakness and sin. When King Jehoshaphat gave himself to the laws of God, the Bible says he put his heart in it. The New Testament describes this as fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.

The Navigators – Jerry Bridges – Holiness Day by Day Devotional – Losing God

Today’s Scripture: Deuteronomy 28:19

“Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out.”

What are the effects of the curse? According to George Smeaton, the worst effect “is the loss of God, or the absence and complete withdrawal of God from a human soul.” I’m sure many people think they would be happy to lose him. But remember that as Jesus hung on the cross bearing the curse in our place, he cried in anguish, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46).

In Deuteronomy 28, Moses listed God’s promised blessings for Israel’s obedience of God’s law (verses 1-14) and his curses for disobedience (verses 15-68). The threatened curses were horrible beyond anything imaginable. For example, it includes a siege so severe that women would be driven to cannibalize their own children.

Today’s Scripture: 1 Chronicles 17-21

“But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” – Matthew 19:30

For several years, I was involved in a ministry with cadets at the United States Air Force Academy. Just before graduation, the cadets who were headed for pilot training filled out a “dream sheet” of where they would like to be assigned. Many guys chose a location because of climate and the facilities.

We had three Christian guys involved in our Navigator ministry who requested Del Rio, Texas. A lot of their classmates thought they were crazy. Del Rio was a small town on the Mexican border. It wasn’t close to any major cities, and the climate was mostly hot. These three guys had prayed about it and thought Del Rio would be a good place to minister. We called them the Del Rio trio, and they went there with a heart to witness to their classmates and have an impact for Christ.

The Navigators – Jerry Bridges – Holiness Day by Day Devotional – Why the Curse?

Today’s Scripture: Deuteronomy 12:28

“Be careful to obey all these words that I command you.”

Why was it necessary for Christ to give his life as a ransom to redeem us from the curse of the law? Why are we under a curse from which we need to be redeemed? In Galatians 3:10, Paul wrote, “all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, ‘cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the law, and do them.’” Mankind was under a curse because we had not perfectly obeyed the law of God—either in Adam or as individuals.

The curse falls on everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the law. This is an impossibly exacting standard. No college demands a perfect 4.0 GPA for graduation. If it did, only a scant few would graduate. But Paul tells us this is what the law of God demands.

Today’s Scripture: 1 Kings 1-4

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. – 3 John 4

What are you hoping to pass on to your children? In 1 Kings 2:2-3 we read the charge David gave Solomon: “I am about to go the way of all the earth,” David said. “So be strong, show yourself a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in his ways, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and requirements…so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go.”

The Scriptures tell us that Solomon loved the Lord and walked in the statutes of David, his father. Solomon was a wise man, a rich man, the leader of a powerful nation, and yet he was a humble man before God.

The Navigators – Jerry Bridges – Holiness Day by Day Devotional – Sin and Self-Esteem

Today’s Scripture: 2 Peter 1:5

“Make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue.”

We should not seek holiness in order to feel good about ourselves, to blend in with our Christian peer group, or to avoid the sense of shame and guilt that follows the committing of persistent sin. Far too often our concern with sin arises from how it makes us feel. Sinful habits, sometimes called “besetting sins,” cause us to feel defeated, and we don’t like to be defeated in anything, whether it’s a game of Ping-Pong or our struggle with sin.

I once spoke at a retreat on the importance of putting on Christ-like character while at the same time seeking to put off sinful habits. After my message, four or five people came to me asking for personal help in dealing with some particular sin in their lives, but no one came asking for help in putting on any Christ-like virtues. As I pondered the possible reason for this, I realized that sinful habits make us feel guilty and defeated. The absence of Christ-like character usually doesn’t have a similar effect, so there’s less motivation to seek change in our lives.

The Navigators – Leroy Eims – Daily Discipleship Devotional – Lingering Sin

Today’s Scripture: Numbers 31-33

Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God. Your sins have been your downfall! – -Hosea 14:1-2

Years ago, I memorized Numbers 33:55 as a warning to my own soul: “But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then it shall come to pass that those whom ye let remain of them shall be as pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell” (KJV).

I memorized that verse because I was working with a group of guys and was trying to get across to them the importance of confessing sin to God–of keeping short accounts with the Lord and living a clean life before Him.

If you and I harbor sin in our lives, this verse says our vision for the work of God will be clouded, our forward progress will be hindered, and the sin that remains in our lives will be a constant vexation to us, both in our fellowship with God and in our service to Him.

The Navigators – Jerry Bridges – Holiness Day by Day Devotional – Set Free

Today’s Scripture: 1 Peter 1:18

“You were ransomed.”

We associate the word ransom with kidnapping, but this hasn’t always been its primary association. Centuries ago, ransom was the payment given an enemy country to secure the release of prisoners of war. In Bible times a ransom was the price paid to gain freedom for a slave. To pay a ransom was to purchase back someone from captivity or slavery.

Jesus said, “The Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28, NIV). To fully understand his meaning we must examine the related word redeem, which means to buy back or release someone from slavery or captivity by paying a ransom. Redemption, then, is the action to secure release; while ransom is the price paid to effect the action.

The Navigators – Leroy Eims – Daily Discipleship Devotional – Avoiding Slow Leaks

Today’s Scripture: Leviticus 18-20

Avoid every kind of evil. – 1 Thessalonians 5:22

A quick read through Leviticus 18-20 raises some questions: How low can society go? How deep into sin? How polluted can the human spirit become? How degraded the human race? There are laws and commands in this passage that stagger the mind, and the Lord speaks plainly and bluntly to His people. “You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices. You must obey my laws and be careful to follow my decrees. I am the Lord your God” (Leviticus 18:3-4).

So they were neither to retain the idolatry of Egypt nor take on the moral standards of the land to which they were going, and they were to abstain from the corruption of their own fleshly desires.
