As you read the Gospels, notice that some of Jesus’ sharpest rebukes were directed to those He loved the most. He told Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan!” (Matthew 16:23) To Martha he said, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part” (Luke 10:41-42). He told His disciples, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith” (Matthew 8:26). In Luke 9:55, Jesus turned and rebuked James and John, telling them, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of.”

Today’s Turning Point with David Jeremiah – Divine Protection

Sometimes it helps to have an insight from Greek grammar to get the fullest meaning of a New Testament text. There are several kinds of conditional sentences in Greek: “if . . . then.” One kind, by its grammatical form, conveys that the premise (“if”) is understood to be true. This is the form that occurs in Romans 8:31b, which could be translated this way: “If God is for us—and He definitely is for us—who can be against us?”

This verse occurs in one of the most powerful passages in all of Paul’s letters: Romans 8:28-39. Paul has said that God uses everything in life (verse 28) to contribute to His purpose of conforming us to the image of His Son (verse 29). Given that fact, “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us—and He definitely is for us as I have just said in verses 28-30—who can be against us?” This is the greatest form of spiritual security the Christian can have, both temporally and eternally.

Today’s Turning Point with David Jeremiah – No Condemnation

Statutes of limitation specify an amount of time (years) after which charges may not be brought against an alleged perpetrator of a crime. Part of the reason is to promote the speedy resolution of suspected violations of the law.

The Bible’s statute of limitations is spelled out in Romans 8:1: “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” That is, when a Christian sins, God does not have a certain time frame within which He must judge the sinner for his sins. Why? Because there is no judgment, and therefore no condemnation, for a Christian’s sins. The penalty for all our sins was heaped upon Christ in His passionate suffering before and during the crucifixion. Christ bore the judgment, condemnation, and penalty (death) for our sins. That is not to say our sins don’t matter—they certainly do. Our sins should be promptly confessed and fellowship with God restored. But there is no condemnation.

In his book God’s Battle Plan for the Mind, David Saxton studied the Puritan practice of meditating on Scripture and concluded, “The believer must set aside healthy, generous portions of time for personal devotions, prayer, and Bible meditation.”

The Puritans often likened meditation to chewing and digesting one’s meal, and this is a biblical analogy. The prophet Jeremiah said, “Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart” (Jeremiah 15:16). Jesus said we cannot live by bread alone, but by every word proceeding from God (Matthew 4:4).

To encourage means to in-courage, that is, to instill fresh courage into someone who is faltering. God calls us to be spiritual encouragers to those who are spiritually fading. We’re to build up those facing great challenges. Throughout Scripture, we see this in action.

Moses told the Israelites, “Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall go in there. Encourage him” (Deuteronomy 1:38). King Hezekiah “gave encouragement to all the Levites who taught the good knowledge of the Lord” (2 Chronicles 30:22). Barnabas so uplifted those around him, he was named “Son of Encouragement” by the early church (Acts 4:36).

Just before Jesus returned to heaven, He told His disciples to preach His message to all the nations, “baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). A few weeks later, thousands of people heard Peter’s sermon about Jesus on the Day of Pentecost, and “those who gladly received his word were baptized” (Acts 2:41). When Philip took the Gospel to Samaria, those who responded, “both men and women were baptized” (Acts 8:12). When he explained the Gospel to the Ethiopian eunuch, the man said, “What hinders me from being baptized?” (Acts 8:36). When Saul of Tarsus was saved, he was baptized as a public demonstration of his private decision (Acts 9:18). Throughout the book of Acts, the new Christians gave public testimony of their faith through the act of baptism.

We aren’t called to greatness, but to faithfulness. Most of our work is unheralded, and we’re often faced with thankless tasks known only to God. No one sees when we wrestle in prayer for a grandchild, when we place our tithes and offerings in the basket at church, when we rake the leaves for an elderly neighbor, or leave a New Testament at the bedside of a hospitalized friend. Even when we stand before others, the group we’re addressing has no idea how much time and prayer went into our preparation.

Life after death was not clearly defined in the ancient Near East. Mesopotamian worldviews have the dead passing into the netherworld through a series of seven gates. Even in the Old Testament, “gates of death [or Hades or Sheol]” are mentioned often (Job 17:16; 38:17; Psalm 9:13; 107:18; Isaiah 38:10). The most well-known instance is when Jesus says “the gates of Hades shall not prevail against [the Church].”

Every church should rejoice in life’s mile markers, starting with birth, as we dedicate our children to the Lord. This is a biblical practice. In the Old Testament, Hannah brought her boy, Samuel, to the temple. There she dedicated him to the Lord, saying, “For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition… I also have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the Lord” (1 Samuel 1:27-28).

In the New Testament, Joseph and Mary did the same. In Luke 2:22-32, they brought Him to the temple in Jerusalem to consecrate Him to the Lord.

On September 2, 1945, representatives of the government of Japan came aboard the American battleship USS Missouri to sign the documents that officially ended World War II. Allied and Japanese forces were no longer at war. Peace was conditional upon Japan’s agreement to end all hostility toward America and Allied nations. Because Japan stopped “sinning” against Allied forces, peace was declared. If the nations were still active enemies, there would have been no treaty.

As Adam and Eve looked back on the Garden of Eden, their physical removal from the Garden was a visual reminder of their break in their relationship with God. Despite their dismal circumstances, God had a different ending in mind. He did not forsake His creation.

God’s affection for us is revealed through His presence. He heard Jonah’s prayer from the belly of the fish. He sustained David as he waited to become king while being ruthlessly pursued by King Saul. God positioned Queen Esther to save His people from annihilation.

Today’s Turning Point with David Jeremiah – Love Languages: Give Your Love

First John 4:8 says, “God is love.” And John 3:16 says, “God gave.” God’s loving nature was the reason for more than just giving—He created, He redeems, He provides, He forgives, He restores, and more. Yet almost everything God does can be put under the heading of giving.

Everything we have comes from God and comes to us because He has given. As David noted in his prayer, “For all things come from You, and of Your own we have given You” (1 Chronicles 29:14, italics added). David’s response to God’s giving was to give back to Him as an act of worship. In fact, the apostle Paul said that giving (to others) is a test of the sincerity of our love (2 Corinthians 8:8). And what example of giving did he cite? The fact that Christ gave (became poor) to us so we might receive (become spiritually rich), (2 Corinthians 8:9).

Psalm 17 says we are hidden under the shadow of His wings.
Psalm 27 says we are hidden in the shelter of His tabernacle.
Isaiah 49 says we are hidden in the shadow of His hand.
Psalm 32 says that God is our hiding place.
And Colossians 3 says our lives are hidden with Christ in God.

The Bible says, “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:25). It says, “Be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). Romans 8:14 tells us to be “led by the Spirit of God.” When Jesus ascended to heaven, He asked the Father to send the Holy Spirit to indwell His people and to empower us in our work for Christ. It’s the Holy Spirit who lives the life of Christ through us and who achieves the work of Christ through us.

The Spirit of God has been given to us to empower us in our walk.

The book Revive Us Again includes the story of Ruth Sundquist, a Moody Bible Institute student in the 1940s who was attending a missionary conference at nearby Moody Memorial Church. The speaker challenged the students to come forward and offer themselves for missionary service, but Ruth didn’t feel willing to go forward. The speaker then said, “If you aren’t willing to go, ask the Lord to make you willing to go.” Still Ruth hesitated. Then he said, “If you aren’t willing to do that, ask Him to make you willing to be willing to pray that prayer.”

Ruth said, “That’s about where I had to start.”1

The Lord has a calling on our lives, and we’ll discover His will as we’re willing to obey Him without reservation. Sometimes it’s hard to say, “I’m willing.” But perhaps, like Ruth Sundquist, you can start by saying, “Lord, I’m willing for You to make me willing to be willing.”

NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is made up of 28 member nations with 37 other nations involved in NATO programs. NATO was formed in 1949 to defend its members against attacks by nonmembers. The basic idea of such a coalition is: Any attack on one is an attack on all.

God’s covenant with Israel is similar. God will bless all nations who bless Israel and will curse any nation that curses Israel. The ancient nations that attacked Israel have long since been covered over by the sands of time. It is no coincidence that America has been the most blessed and prosperous nation on earth while being the chief ally and defender of Israel since her statehood in 1948. The promises of God regarding His relationship with Israel stand as a stark warning to any nation that chooses to be the enemy of Israel. It would behoove America and all nations to stand beside God’s chosen people and pray and act for the peace of Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6).
