A distinguished professor at an evangelical seminary was invited to speak to an adult Sunday school class at a large, mainstream church. When he began his lesson, he noticed none of the class members had a Bible. He asked if there were any Bibles available that could be used during the class. An extensive search was made and finally, in a storage closet, a box of unused Bibles was discovered. Once this key tool for spiritual growth was distributed to the class, the professor proceeded to teach.

It has been said that a valid measure of a Christian’s spiritual growth is the amount of dust that has settled on his Bible. The Bible is considered food for the follower of Christ—the daily source of nourishment, counsel, inspiration, correction, and hope (2 Timothy 3:16). The Word of God can do what no other book can: penetrate deeply into our heart and soul and reveal our “thoughts and intents” (Hebrews 4:12). It can do that because it is “living and powerful,” empowered by the Spirit who inspired it (2 Peter 1:21).

Don’t let your Bible be hidden or dusty. Begin today to let God revive you according to His Word.

The Bible speaks to you in the very tone of God’s voice.

You get what you put into it. It’s simple math. You can’t plant carrots and expect to harvest watermelon. You can’t fill your piggy bank with pennies and expect a hundred dollar bill to emerge. We may wish for results to magically appear, but the cause and effect principle remains.

Of course there are exceptions. When a child puts his newly pulled tooth under his pillow, a coin appears in its place, as long as his parents didn’t forget. The most important exception is Christ’s gift to us. We surrender our sin and failure to God, and He replaces it with the flawless righteousness of Christ. God’s commitment to us includes an eternal home and purpose for today. He delights in transforming us to bring forth good treasure. We become His lights, impacting and encouraging the people around us.

Today’s Turning Point with David Jeremiah – Hidden Piggy Banks

We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.

Young children love collecting coins to fill their piggy banks. They dream of candy and toys as they listen to the clang of carefully dropped coins into bright colored ceramic. Meanwhile, hidden from view, children have a far more important collection growing inside of them: their memories.

Little eyes watch: processing and making sense of the world one moment at a time. Parents do their best to direct their children, creatively using everything at their disposal. In the bustle of life it is easy to forget the most impactful tool available: who we are and who we are becoming.
Whether we are influencing children, friends, or coworkers, who we are speaks the loudest. I can say something is important to me, but do my actions and life agree? Integrity is when a person’s words, actions, and values are aligned. The best way to become a leader worth following is to follow God, allowing Him to transform and direct us. He has infinite wisdom. As we attune and surrender ourselves to God, we grow in our ability to trust Him with ourselves and the ones we love.

Each day of our lives we make deposits in the memory banks of our children.

The crowd erupts as the baseball player runs across the home plate. He is safe, and his team is a point closer to winning. Having a home is an important value of most societies, and we pity those who are forced to live on the street. The ideal home is a sanctuary: a place where we are accepted, secure, and loved.

While we may struggle to find such a home in the world, this promise remains. Our faith and trust in Christ declares us “home safe,” and Jesus is preparing an eternal home for us. This promise is not just for the future, but for today. Because He has declared our worth and purchased our souls with Christ’s sacrifice, we are free.

The Huffington Post recently ran an article by a woman who opened up about her struggle to forgive herself. Her husband battled cancer, and she had been his caregiver. As his situation grew worse, the stress intensified on her. She often became angry and yelled at him. Now that he’s gone, she feels damaged, guilty, and unable to find peace.

Every human is a sinner, and sometimes we fail at the worst moments. Our sin leads to guilt, and that leads to shame.

In 1851, British artist William Hunt created a painting he titled “The Light of the World.” It has become one of the most recognizable religious paintings in modern history. He shows Christ standing at the tightly-closed door of a seemingly neglected cottage. Christ holds a lantern in one hand; His other hand is raised to knock on the door as if to gain entrance. The most unique feature of the painting is that there is no handle on the outside of the door. For Christ to gain entrance to the cottage, the door would have to be opened from within.

But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part” (Luke 10:41-42). He told His disciples, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith” (Matthew 8:26). Statutes of limitation specify an amount of time (years) after which charges may not be brought against an alleged perpetrator of a crime. Part of the reason is to promote the speedy resolution of suspected violations of the law.

The Bible’s statute of limitations is spelled out in Romans 8:1: “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” That is, when a Christian sins, God does not have a certain time frame within which He must judge the sinner for his sins. Why? Because there is no judgment, and therefore no condemnation, for a Christian’s sins. The penalty for all our sins was heaped upon Christ in His passionate suffering before and during the crucifixion. Christ bore the judgment, condemnation, and penalty (death) for our sins. That is not to say our sins don’t matter—they certainly do. Our sins should be promptly confessed and fellowship with God restored. But there is no condemnation.

In his book God’s Battle Plan for the Mind, David Saxton studied the Puritan practice of meditating on Scripture and concluded, “The believer must set aside healthy, generous portions of time for personal devotions, prayer, and Bible meditation.”

The Puritans often likened meditation to chewing and digesting one’s meal, and this is a biblical analogy. The prophet Jeremiah said, “Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart” (Jeremiah 15:16). Jesus said we cannot live by bread alone, but by every word proceeding from God (Matthew 4:4).

To encourage means to in-courage, that is, to instill fresh courage into someone who is faltering. God calls us to be spiritual encouragers to those who are spiritually fading. We’re to build up those facing great challenges. Throughout Scripture, we see this in action.

Moses told the Israelites, “Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall go in there. Encourage him” (Deuteronomy 1:38). King Hezekiah “gave encouragement to all the Levites who taught the good knowledge of the Lord” (2 Chronicles 30:22). Barnabas so uplifted those around him, he was named “Son of Encouragement” by the early church (Acts 4:36).

Just before Jesus returned to heaven, He told His disciples to preach His message to all the nations, “baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). A few weeks later, thousands of people heard Peter’s sermon about Jesus on the Day of Pentecost, and “those who gladly received his word were baptized” (Acts 2:41). When Philip took the Gospel to Samaria, those who responded, “both men and women were baptized” (Acts 8:12). When he explained the Gospel to the Ethiopian eunuch, the man said, “What hinders me from being baptized?” (Acts 8:36). When Saul of Tarsus was saved, he was baptized as a public demonstration of his private decision (Acts 9:18). Throughout the book of Acts, the new Christians gave public testimony of their faith through the act of baptism.

No one sees when we wrestle in prayer for a grandchild, when we place our tithes and offerings in the basket at church, when we rake the leaves for an elderly neighbor, or leave a New Testament at the bedside of a hospitalized friend. Even when we stand before others, the group we’re addressing has no idea how much time and prayer went into our preparation.

Life after death was not clearly defined in the ancient Near East. Mesopotamian worldviews have the dead passing into the netherworld through a series of seven gates. Even in the Old Testament, “gates of death [or Hades or Sheol]” are mentioned often (Job 17:16; 38:17; Psalm 9:13; 107:18; Isaiah 38:10). The most well-known instance is when Jesus says “the gates of Hades shall not prevail against [the Church].”
