The Navigators – Jerry Bridges – Holiness Day by Day Devotional – One Choice at a Time

Today’s Scripture: Deuteronomy 30:19

“I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life.”

The practice of putting off sinful attitudes and actions and putting on Christ-like character involves a constant series of choices. We choose in every situation which direction we’ll go. Through these choices we develop Christ-like habits of living. Habits are developed by repetition, and it’s in the arena of moral choices that we develop spiritual habit patterns.

We see this in Romans 6:19: “Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness” (NIV). The more the Roman believers sinned, the more they were inclined to sin. They were continually deepening their habit patterns of sin simply through their practice of making sinful choices.

What was true of them can be just as true of us today. Sin tends to cloud our reason, dull our consciences, stimulate our sinful desires, and weaken our wills. Because of this, each sin we commit reinforces the habit of sinning and makes it easier to give in to that temptation the next time.

Paul wanted the Roman believers, and us today, to turn in the other direction and develop habits of godly living: “so now offer [the parts of your body] in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness” (Romans 6:19, NIV). Righteousness in this passage refers to the ethical righteousness —the right conduct—we’re to practice every day. Whereas righteousness in this verse refers to our conduct, holiness refers to our character. So it’s through righteous actions that we develop holy character. Holiness of character is developed one choice at a time as we choose to act righteously in each and every situation and circumstance we encounter during the day. The Navigators – Jerry Bridges – Holiness Day by Day Devotional – Growing in Faithfulness

Today’s Scripture: Revelation 2:10

“Be faithful unto death.”

For growing in faithfulness, the first step is to acknowledge the biblical standard. Faithfulness entails absolute honesty, utter dependability, and unswerving loyalty. It’s to be like Daniel: neither corrupt nor negligent. Develop convictions consistent with this standard based on the Word of God, and plan to memorize one or more verses on the topic of faithfulness.

Second, evaluate your life with the aid of the Holy Spirit and perhaps a spouse or close friend. Do you seek to be scrupulously honest? Can others depend on you even when it’s costly? Will you stick by your friend when he’s in difficulty, and confront him in love when he’s wrong?

The Navigators – Jerry Bridges – Holiness Day by Day Devotional – Why the Curse?

Today’s Scripture: Deuteronomy 12:28

“Be careful to obey all these words that I command you.”

Why was it necessary for Christ to give his life as a ransom to redeem us from the curse of the law? Why are we under a curse from which we need to be redeemed? In Galatians 3:10, Paul wrote, “all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, ‘cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the law, and do them.’” Mankind was under a curse because we had not perfectly obeyed the law of God—either in Adam or as individuals.

The curse falls on everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the law. This is an impossibly exacting standard. No college demands a perfect 4.0 GPA for graduation. If it did, only a scant few would graduate. But Paul tells us this is what the law of God demands.

The Navigators – Jerry Bridges – Holiness Day by Day Devotional – How Honest?

Today’s Scripture: Proverbs 12:22

“Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord.”

On Christmas Eve, our doorbell rang. Answering it, I found a little four-year-old neighbor girl holding out a plate of cookies. “My mommy sent you some cookies,” she said with a big smile. I thanked her and put them down someplace —and promptly forgot about them for we were just leaving for a church service. A few days later as I was walking out to my car, the little girl came down the sidewalk on her tricycle and asked how I liked the cookies. “Oh, they were fine,” I said, though I hadn’t even tasted them.

As I drove away, I began thinking about this. I had lied. Why? Because it was expedient; it saved me embarrassment and the little girl’s disappointment (though mostly I was concerned about myself). Sure, it was of little or no consequence. But God says without qualification that he detests lying.

Thinking further, I realized this wasn’t an isolated instance. The Holy Spirit reminded me of other occasions of exaggeration or manipulating a story’s facts just a bit. I had to face the fact that I wasn’t quite as honest as I’d considered myself to be. God taught me a valuable, though humbling, lesson.

As I’ve told the story of the cookies to some audiences, I’ve gotten a troubled reaction from a few people. Some sincere Christians think I may be nit-picking. But consider Daniel. The record states that his enemies could find no corruption in him (Daniel 6:4). It seems clear they would have seized upon any inconsistency, regardless of how small or insignificant, to bring Daniel into disrepute. But they could find none. Daniel had evidently mastered this matter of absolute integrity. We should have the same goal.

The Navigators – Jerry Bridges – Holiness Day by Day Devotional – This Is Love

Today’s Scripture: John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son.”

Jesus’ propitiatory work was initiated by the Father because of his great love for us. “In this the love of God was made manifest among us,” the apostle John wrote, “that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:9-10).

Sometimes the work of Christ is erroneously depicted as a kind and gentle Jesus placating the wrath of a vengeful God, as if Jesus needed to persuade the Father not to pour out his wrath on us. Nothing could be further from the truth. God the Father sent his Son on this great errand of mercy and grace. Though Jesus came voluntarily and gladly, he was sent by the Father.

The Navigators – Jerry Bridges – Holiness Day by Day Devotional – Everything for Us

Today’s Scripture: 1 John 3:16

“He laid down his life for us.”

The law of God set forth in Scripture is a transcript of God’s own moral nature. It’s the law that was fully imprinted on Adam’s heart as part of his being created in God’s image. It’s the same law that the apostle Paul said is still written on people’s hearts regardless of how obscured it may now be (Romans 2:12-16). It’s a universal law applicable to all people of all times.

The apostle Paul was referring to this universal moral will of God when he wrote that Christ was “born under the law” (Galatians 4:4). Jesus was born under the law because he came to perfectly obey it in our place. He came to do what we, because of our sinful nature, could not do.
