Guideposts – Devotions for Women – Declutter Your Spiritual Life

By HEIDI GAUL

Remove the distractions and seek Jesus.

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13 (NIV)

In the kitchen, my utensil drawer was stuck shut again. I jiggled and yanked the handle, finally releasing whatever had blocked it. Staring at the jumbled contents, I sighed. All I needed was the ice cream scoop. Shuffling through various wooden spoons, silicone spatulas, and stainless-steel knives—each created for only one purpose—my fingertips found the familiar rubberized handle. Now to work it free from the tangled mass.

That drawer, with all its useful and helpful items, sometimes reminds me of the way life can get cluttered with busywork. Like the garlic press I recently purchased, I always find ways to cram one more volunteer opportunity or social engagement into my week. Sometimes I lose track of the point. Why am I doing it and who am I doing it for? With my focus split in a hundred directions, none of these things bring me—or others—closer to Jesus. I’ve emptied the drawer, carefully selecting the utensils I’ll keep and which to donate. Now I’ll be able to find what I need with ease.

I’m doing the same with my free time. Things that distract me from Jesus or from serving Him better will be removed. Psalm 27:8 reminds me, “You have said, ‘Seek my face.’ My heart says to you, ‘Your face, LORD, do I seek’ (ESV). I want to declutter my soul, to seek Him with all my heart and find Him, and to reach for Him and recognize His touch deep inside.

FAITH STEP: Pick a cluttered drawer in your home and clear the unnecessary items from it. Now apply the same principle to your life. Remove the distractions and seek Jesus.

Joyce Meyer – The “S” Word

Joyce meyer

In like manner, you married women, be submissive to your own husbands [subordinate yourselves as being secondary to and dependent on them, and adapt yourselves to them], so that even if any do not obey the Word [of God], they may be won over not by discussion but by the [godly] lives of their wives. —1 Peter 3:1

For the sake of order, God instructed that wives be submissive to their husbands. Many women don’t like that particular “s” word, but think of it this way: you can’t have two people driving a car at the same time. However, it was never God’s intention that women be dominated and made to feel as if their opinions were of no value.

Sad to say, many women perform the role of the spiritual head of the home. Some women need their men to rise up and be real men, and I believe that means to be a man who seeks God regularly and leads his family in righteousness and godliness. Many fine men are doing that, but many need to make progress in this area.

I encourage women to pray for their husbands, that they will indeed take their place as the spiritual head of the home. I also encourage women to let men do that without opposing them. Some women say they want their husbands to be the head of the home, but resist them when they try.

Lord, Your counsel to me is always good. I embrace it, and I ask You to bring clarity as to how I live this out today. Amen.

Joyce Meyer – A Virtuous Woman

A capable, intelligent, and virtuous woman—who is he who can find her? She is far more precious than jewels and her value is far above rubies or pearls. —Proverbs 31:10

Who can compete with the woman described in Proverbs 31? This woman can do it all; she’s a great wife, mother, she manages the house, she runs a business, she cooks, she sews—what she doesn’t seem to do is get tired! She seems absolutely perfect. I disliked her until I realized she was an example to me, a goal I could reach for. One that God Himself would help me realize if I put my trust in Him and was willing to change. I want you to consider her too and believe that you can become the confident woman you want to be. God wants each woman to be able to insert her name in this woman’s story.

A good woman is hard to find; she is to be valued above rubies or pearls. Good women are precious, more precious than jewels or expensive gems. We must intentionally work to build up our husbands with thoughtful, caring questions and statements because like this verse points out, a woman who is capable, intelligent, and virtuous is a rare combination. Any man who has a wife like this should appreciate and value her tremendously.

Lord, I can’t compete with this woman, but I thank You for her example. I aspire to be like her, and I trust that Your grace working in my life will lift me up higher and higher. Amen.
