Are you thinking of next year’s tax bill yet? Strangely, some are – and with anticipation! They are recipients of “tax extender” provisions. It’s the federal package in which lawmakers offer tax breaks to a select few. The practice started with the Technical and Miscellaneous Revenue Act of 1988, which wrapped several tax breaks together in an effort to make reauthorization a simple process. It was meant to be a temporary measure, but like many government benefits, it has ballooned out of control.
Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.
Proverbs 19:17
An example of the kind of provisions the program extends is last year’s gift to Hollywood producers, offering $20 million in immediate deductions to those choosing to film in specific locations. Critics decry the practice as the rich helping the rich get richer; however, in 2015 $85 billion in exceptions to standard taxation formulas were still on the table.
The Bible says God takes note of genuine generosity offered to those in need and He will bless those seeking to help the underprivileged. Pray today for lawmakers overseeing America’s vast resources to seek God’s wisdom in distributing assistance – and also pray for the voices of those truly in need to be heard above the fray.
