Presidential Prayer Team; J.R.- Flight of Folly

What comes to mind when you hear the term “repo man?” A burly, tattooed guy in his tow truck, scouring a neighborhood for a car whose owner is past due on his payments? These days, a “repo man” is more likely to be at a coffee shop with a smartphone. Some lenders are now installing “starter interrupt devices” on vehicles. Miss a payment, and they will disable your ignition remotely using GPS. You won’t be going anywhere. They used to say, “You can run but you can’t hide.” Nowadays, you can’t run, either.

But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

Jonah 1:3

Jonah foolishly thought he could run from the presence of the Lord. Although the task God had assigned to him was difficult and dangerous, it was ultimately intended to bless Jonah. But stubbornly, he ran…until God brought his diversionary adventure to a quick end.

The Lord may allow you to run for a short season, but in His time He will draw you back. His ultimate purpose in doing so is not punishment, but to lead you “in the way everlasting” David described in Psalm 139. Today, pray that America’s citizens and leaders might turn to, not away from, the Lord’s presence.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.K. – First With You

Bible commentator Matthew Henry wrote the following: “Calling on God supposes knowledge of him, faith in him, desire toward him, dependence on him, and, as evidence of the sincerity of all this, conscientious obedience to him.” None of this was happening at the time of the prophet Joel. He sounded the alarm. The impending devastation of the land by locusts, coming as merciless armies and leaving total destruction in their wake, caused Joel to appeal to Israel to “cry out to the Lord” and return to Him with all their hearts (Joel 1:14).

Blow a trumpet in Zion; sound an alarm on my holy mountain!

Joel 2:1

If there was true repentance, the affliction promised might not come. The possibility of that should have encouraged them to repent. God would certainly forgive His people. For the Lord “is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.” (Joel 2:13)

The same is true today. Your gracious God looks for repentance from this nation – a people who, in great part, does not call upon the Lord nor desire or depend on Him. Let it be…in your life first. Then intercede for leaders and citizens alike to turn again to the God who guided the Founding Fathers to form a union with the freedoms enjoyed today.

Presidential Prayer Team; H.L.M. – Legacy of Faith

Joshua was a brilliant military leader and a strong spiritual influence. Yet the key to Joshua’s success was his submission to the Lord. As a result, Israel remained faithful to God throughout his lifetime. In fact, after the Israelites safely crossed the Jordan River, Joshua asked someone from each of the 12 tribes to retrieve a stone for a memorial. Not only did Joshua build the memorial that He commanded, but he also built one in the middle of the Jordan. The purpose was to allow future generations to remember the power of the Lord.

These stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever.

Joshua 4:7

The Bible is full of examples where God’s power has prevailed in the midst of chaos. So when your circumstances seem impossible, run to His Word for encouragement. Then write down the lessons you learn about His faithfulness. Share those milestones with the children in your life so they may understand His promises to them.

As you thank your Heavenly Father for His faithfulness each day, remember to intercede for America’s leaders. Pray they will return this nation to its biblical foundation and leave a God-honoring legacy to future generations.

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W. – You Decide

Have you ever wondered how many decisions you make per day? Researchers estimate that a person makes approximately 35,000 choices each day – both big and small. Life is full of choices, and while some don’t make a huge difference, many can greatly alter the course of your future as well as that of others. The ability to choose is a great power given by your Creator. Each choice has consequences…and sometimes rewards.

I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life.

Deuteronomy 30:19

In today’s verse, Moses offers the Israelites a choice given by God. He promised that if they obeyed Him, He would bless and prosper them while defeating their enemies. However, if they turned away from Him and worshiped other gods, they would be cursed and perish.

God offers the same choice today to His followers. Pray that the citizens of the country and its leaders will return to the Lord and choose life – so that He may once again pour His blessings out upon the nation.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.P. – Off The Shelf

Ronald Reagan, the fortieth U. S. President, once said, “I believe with all my heart that standing up for America means standing up for the God who has so blessed our land. We need God’s help to guide our nation through stormy seas. But we can’t expect Him to protect America in a crisis if we just leave Him over on the shelf in our day-to-day living.”

You shall blow the trumpets…They shall be a reminder of you before your God.

Numbers 10:10

In Numbers 10, God told Moses to fashion two silver trumpets and use them to call Israel together, to break camp, to go to war, and to mark months, feasts and celebrations. However, sounding the trumpet was not only a way of communication. It was an act of remembrance before God.

Your Presidential Prayer Team sounds the trumpet every day to seek and serve God and bring the needs of the nation before Him. Pray that America will heed Reagan’s advice and not set God aside, but stand up for the Lord and turn to Him humbly and expectantly in times of crisis. After all, He is the one who has dominion of this nation and this world, both now and forevermore.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R.- Boot Camp Blessings

If you decide to become one of “The Few, The Proud, The Marines,” it is not a matter of signing some forms and then shipping off for the battlefront. First, you will go to boot camp – and it’s not likely to be enjoyable. For three months, you will be subjected to all manner of physical duress, mental torment, sleep deprivation, mind games, seemingly pointless procedures and rugged routines. None of this is done out of hatred, but rather to make you a successful Marine and give you the best chance of surviving in combat.

I will turn to you and make you fruitful and multiply you and will confirm my covenant with you.

Leviticus 26:9

Leviticus is a book of rules, many of them unfathomable to the modern mind. But the Israelites were living in a world filled with pagan, demonic practices that saturated everyday life. God wanted to reorient them to a proper worldview so that they could worship Him in holiness. In return for their obedience, He promised life and unparalleled blessings.

The key themes in Leviticus from the Lord: “be holy for I am holy,” and “love your neighbor as yourself.” Today, pray that America’s citizens and leaders will embrace those commands…so that God might pour out His unprecedented blessings on the nation.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.P. – Bad To Good

Some say that we should thank God for all things – including broken legs, burning homes, or even war. Yet there’s a difference between thanking God for bad things and thanking God in bad things. God isn’t out to get you with all the negative events that happen in your life; instead, you can be assured that He can turn all bad circumstances for the good.

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

I Thessalonians 5:18

Job was plagued by Satan after God had given the devil permission to afflict the man. Job did not blame God, but stayed faithful…and the Lord ultimately turned Job’s situation for the good (Job 42:10-17). Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery in Egypt…but later he told them, “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.” (Genesis 50:20) The apostle Paul underwent many physical trials…but he said, “When I am weak, then I am strong.” (II Corinthians 12:10)

Ask God to rise up in your problems. Trust Him to turn them around for the good. Thank Him amidst all your circumstances. Then intercede for the nation that God will use all of the turmoil that’s going on in the world to turn people toward Him.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.K. – Guidelines for Life

John Quincy Adams, sixth president of the United States, frequently wrote letters to his family when he was away from home. Adams penned this to his son in 1811: “So great is my veneration for the Bible, and so strong my belief, that when duly read and meditated on, it is of all books in the world that which contributes most to make men good, wise and happy.”

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you.

Ephesians 4:31

Scripture can be very specific about what makes men good and wise, or what defines them as evil and foolish. If tempers rise, men may react in anger, maligning one another with passionate outbursts of rage or sarcasm. Filthy words “grieve the Holy Spirit of God.” (Ephesians 4:30) You have a duty as a Christian, whose heart is tender to the Lord, to be an example – by your word and action – of what is right and pleasing in God’s eyes.

“Do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” (Ephesians 5:17) Apply His guidelines to your life. Then pray for those who lead this nation that they may seek to live in obedience to the will of God, tenderhearted and kind in word and deed.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R. – Sow Sorry

Depending on what you believe, he was shot by a hired killer at a house in Detroit and his remains cremated – or he was dispatched with a hunting knife and then buried in a 55-gallon drum…which was then placed in an old car, crushed in a compactor and sent to Japan as scrap metal. Or he was buried under a residential driveway. Or he was interred in a shallow grave in a field near a restaurant. Or he was entombed in concrete beneath the end zone at the stadium in Meadowlands, New Jersey.

Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.

Galatians 6:7

Whatever you believe, no one has been able to prove what happened to Jimmy Hoffa, the infamous Teamsters boss and mafia figure who disappeared in 1975. What is almost certain is that somebody did to him what he had very likely ordered done to others.

You can believe God will forgive your sin when you repent, but that doesn’t mean you will always be free from sorrowful consequences. That’s why it’s so important to be intentional about how you “sow.” Don’t deliver evil for evil. Instead, sow your time, talent, treasure and prayers wisely in ways that will reap goodness – for you, and for America.

Presidential Prayer Team; H.L.M.- Wondrous Works

When Brian Barcelona was 16, he thought he didn’t need God. But a friend had been inviting Barcelona to church for months. He finally consented when he was promised a free smoothie! But when Barcelona got to church, he dared God to touch him and prove He was real…and He did. “I felt so overwhelmed with love that I’ve never felt before,” he said. “I just started weeping and in that moment I encountered this God that everyone had talked about, and for once in my life it was actually becoming real to me.”

Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!

II Corinthians 9:15

Two years later Barcelona had a vision that God was going to save the high school students of America. He started preaching in a Bible club of about six students; it quickly grew to 600 teens a month. Then Barcelona started an organization that now helps students start Christian clubs on their campus.

Thank the Lord today…and then daily seek opportunities to express to others the inexpressible gift of His love to you. When you do, pray that, like Barcelona, they would find their life purpose through a personal, genuine experience with the Lord. Then ask God to do the same in the lives of the presidential candidates.

Presidential Prayer Team; G.C. – Faith Struggle

Last man standing was an early American game of endurance. It usually involved a test like standing in freezing water or holding your hand over hot coals. The idea was to tolerate the pain longer than anyone else.

We endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.

I Corinthians 9:12

The apostle Paul set a high mark in the area of enduring hardship in the Christian life. In seeking to share the gospel of Christ, he was beaten, stoned, and left for dead, whipped within a lash of his life, shipwrecked, and attacked by an angry mob. Yet after asking God to relieve him of one personal and miserable affliction, the answer was “no.” Instead, God said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (II Corinthians 12:9)

Today you may be facing a significant difficulty in your faith. How are you handling it? Are you gritting your teeth hoping to be acknowledged for your strength, or have you humbly released your will in recognition that God may have a greater purpose at work? Pray for others struggling in their faith in this nation – and especially for those who are in service to America. Ask that they may patiently endure and bear evidence of God’s grace.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.H. God Thing

Have you ever been so focused on the road that you forget where you are going? Sometimes that happens when following God. Bible teacher and pastor Charles Swindoll once said, “You and I can become so dedicated to the will of God, we can be so driven by a false sense of purpose, that we might inadvertently take matters into our own hands and leave God completely out of the loop.”

They attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them.

Acts 16:7

In today’s verse, Paul, Silas and Timothy were following God and not a predetermined path. They had a thriving ministry and wanted to take it to Bithynia, but God prevented them from going. Thankfully, the disciples listened and moved on when they could’ve just as easily had said, “We’re doing a good thing and these people need to hear the Good News.” They could have left God out of the loop.

But they did not – and nor should you. Don’t get so focused on a good thing that you forget to ask if it’s a God thing. Ask your Heavenly Father to lead you and the leaders of this great nation in His will, and to seek His enlightening Word to illuminate the road ahead.

Presidential Prayer Team; JK – Genuine and Unifying

An American walking one evening in Warsaw passed a Polish man walking the other direction. Struck by the Christian hymn he was whistling, the English-speaking gentleman turned and whistled the same tune. The Polish man abruptly faced him and the two embraced. Unable to speak the other’s language, they were unified in their common belief in the Lord.

Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

John 17:11

In Jesus’ high priestly prayer found in John 17, He prayed for the disciples who knew and believed in Him that God would guard and keep them in the truth they had learned. Then He prayed for you and all future believers, “that they may all be one…in us.” (John 17:21) It is fellowship with the Lord – likened to the unity of the Father and Son – that gives you deep joy. It is also relational link between other believers…a bond of peace giving singleness of mind and judgment.

God desires that you be a witness to those around you. Live your faith – one that is genuine, lasting and unifying. Intercede for this nation and its leaders that they may be convinced of His truth and seek to know Him and do His will.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R.- Ballpark Variety

At a grand dedication ceremony on the afternoon of April 16, 1964, New York City’s Mayor Robert Wagner praised William Shea, a lawyer who had helped bring a National League baseball team back to the city and was now having the brand new, state-of-the-art ballpark named in his honor. The mayor proclaimed it the “world’s greatest stadium” and said that with his name on it, Shea was now “practically an immortal.”

His disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!”

Mark 13:1

To paraphrase baseball great Yogi Berra, immortality ain’t what it used to be: Shea Stadium, old and outdated, was demolished in 2009 and replaced with a parking lot the city needed for the newer, adjacent Citi Field. Last year, the new park hosted the World Series.

Jesus understood, better than the disciples, that “wonderful buildings” have limited and distinctly short-term utility. “Do you see these great buildings?” He responded, “There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” (Mark 13:2) What are you building today? As you pray for America’s leaders, may you be focused on immortality – not the ballpark variety, but that offered by the eternal and loving God who offers those who love Him a hope and a future.

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W. – Tomorrow Talk

Do you ever wonder what the future holds? Many do – so it’s not surprising that one of the most widely read sections of any newspaper is the horoscope section. Several folks make their decisions based on the information they read. Because people fear the unknown, they look for ways to figure out what will happen next.

Write therefore the things that you have seen, those that are and those that are to take place after this.

Revelation 1:19

For Christians, there should be no fear of the future. Corrie Ten Boom said “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” Today’s verse is from the book of the Bible that tells the future. Jesus provided a vision to the apostle John as a message to give to His followers about what would one day happen. Some are confused or frightened by the descriptions and imagery of Revelation, but because God has a purpose for everything, you can trust His plan for the future.

If you are concerned about what tomorrow holds – don’t be. Trust God to work everything that happens into His perfect will. Ask for His direction for your part of His plan, and then pray for the nation’s citizens and leaders to turn to Him for guidance.
