Presidential Prayer Team; A.W. – Directing the Flow

Water is a powerful force, but it changes direction very easily. Men can redirect the flow of water by building canals and dams. Even a small beaver can change the direction of a stream by piling up rocks and sticks.

The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.

Proverbs 21:1

Today’s verse likens the heart of a ruler to a stream of water. Although one might assume changing a king’s mind is a difficult task, it’s simple to God. He can turn their understanding, will and affections as He pleases. In Exodus, God hardened the heart of Pharaoh to deny the Jews to leave (Exodus 9:12). In Ezra, God turned the heart of the king of Assyria to assist the Jews in rebuilding the temple (Ezra 6:22). God also directed the hearts of King Saul, King David and King Solomon.

God understands rulers determine the fate of many people. Therefore, many believe He directs leaders based on the people he or she leads. If the people are following the Lord’s ways, He inclines the leader to good. If not, then God turns the leader to evil. As you pray today, ask God to direct the hearts of the nation’s citizens and the country’s leaders towards Him.
