With as many as 100,000 Syrian refugees about to settle in the U.S., many citizens are frightened, worried or angry. What if terrorists are among them? What if the Islam religion takes over? What about the poor, the homeless, and the veterans of America? Some wonder if anything positive can come out of this situation.
If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat.
Proverbs 25:21
The Bible tells of Joseph’s own brothers selling him into slavery to Egypt. Falsely accused, he was thrown into jail. However, he trusted and obeyed God, who raised him up to be second only to Pharaoh himself. In that position, he was able to help his family and nation. He forgave his brothers and told them that though they had meant it for evil, God meant it for good (Genesis 37-50).
Overcome your fear with the belief that God can use any situation for good – then, whatever happens, choose to love God and others. Pray for the nation’s leaders to make wise decisions. Intercede for the dire circumstances of war-ravished nations to end. Pray for those in desperate need who already live in this country, and then ask for God to send workers into the ever-ripe harvest field in the United States (Matthew 9:38).
