The twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne . . . .

Revelation 7:10-12

It hasn’t been seen much since the 1950s and 1960s—teenage girls swooning and fainting at the sight of certain pop music idols—but it happened a lot back then. There is such a thing as an involuntary response in the presence of an adored figure.

Think about the mature, level-headed people in the Bible who found themselves on the ground in the presence of God: Ezekiel (Ezekiel 1:28), Daniel (Daniel 8:17-18), and the apostles Paul (Acts 9:4) and John (Revelation 1:17). And when John looked into heaven to see the throne room of God, he saw a whole group of people responding just the way He did. The twenty-four elders fell down before God to worship Him. And not just once: “Whenever the living creatures” began praising God, the elders fell from their thrones onto their faces to worship God (Revelation 4:9). Something in the living creatures’ expression of praise caused the twenty-four elders to fall down and join them.

Let us begin the practice of praise on earth that we will one day continue in heaven.

You must therefore live, in the present, as far as possible like you will live in the future.
