Presidential Prayer Team; C.H.- See and Believe

David Copperfield is hailed as one of the greatest magicians of all time. He has grossed over $4 billion, more than any other solo performer. People are amazed at his ability to seemingly defy the laws of nature before their very eyes. Onlookers are left scratching their collective heads and saying to themselves, “How can it be?”

But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it.

Mark 16:11

The disciples in today’s passage surely asked the same question when Mary Magdalene arrived to tell them Jesus was alive. They wanted to see it with their own eyes because seeing is believing. No magic was necessary to bring Jesus back from the grave. God doesn’t seemingly defy the laws of nature – He actually literally controls them.

Until Jesus returns, no one on Earth will see His physical body like Mary and later the disciples did that day. But when you serve and love one another, you are the hands and feet of Christ. When others see the love of God through you, they, too, may come to see and believe in Him. Pray for Americans and your national leaders to see Jesus in the lives of believers and come to know Him as well.

Words of Hope – Daily Devotional – What Does It All Mean?

Read: Luke 19:35-40

Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. (Zech. 9:9)

The disciples threw their coats and robes on top of a young donkey, and for two miles they continued, travelling from Bethany toward Jerusalem, throwing down their coats, making a show out of the procession. This was the triumphal entry’s “pre-party.” Joining in the jubilation were many of those who had travelled with Jesus the whole way. They were the ones who “began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen” (v. 37). They thought they were headed into their victory lap.

The Pharisees worked to rein them in. But Jesus cherished and craved his disciples’ praise because he knew, as he had always known, that before the victory would come a crushing defeat. As they crested the Mount of Olives, Jerusalem and its temple stood before them. Instead of rebuking his disciples as the religious leaders insisted, Jesus rallied the crowd: “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out” (v. 40). As the very human Jesus entered the most difficult week of his life and, ultimately, faced his own death, I wonder what solace he found from friends and followers who praised, even when they couldn’t possibly know what it all meant.

Prayer:

We praise you, Lord Jesus Christ. We may not grasp what it all means, but “blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!” Amen.

Have you ever been given an impossible request? In ancient times, the King of Syria sent a letter to the King of Israel asking him to heal his greatest warrior Naaman of leprosy. It was an outlandish appeal – but Naaman’s wife had heard their Hebrew slave proclaiming that the God of Israel could do miracles. Surprisingly when Israel’s king received the request, he didn’t call upon God seeking guidance or wisdom; instead, he put on a dramatic show, tearing his clothes and bemoaning his hopelessness.

And when the king of Israel read the letter, he…said, “Am I God, to kill and to make alive?”

II Kings 5:7

Likewise, some today have given up on America ever again standing for faith and justice at the highest levels. And like Israel’s’ unwise king, they are also looking only to their own abilities. When Israel’s prophet Elisha heard of Naaman’s request, he knew where take the issue. Asking God for help, he received it…and ultimately both nations witnessed the true and powerful God do a miraculous healing.

Presidential Prayer Team; – Dead Men Redemptions?

The proliferation of media today – round-the-clock news channels, the Internet, and armies of professional pundits – has polarized America and made it nearly impossible for the government to get anything done. How much easier it would be if we could return to the days of the nation’s founding when George Washington was president and the nation was united. Right?

While I am yet alive with you, you have been rebellious against the Lord. How much more after my death!

Deuteronomy 31:27

Wrong. During Washington’s presidency, notes one of his biographers, “the number of newspapers printed in the United States exploded…from under 50 newspapers around 1776 to over 250 by 1800, encouraged by new federal laws that made it cheaper to send newspapers through the postal system. Newly aggressive newspaper editors spurned the old standard of impartiality, taking a stronger role in shaping the newspaper’s message in support of, or in opposition to, the government.”

During the fifth century, Patrick was kidnapped from Britain and made a slave in Ireland for six years. He escaped and returned to his family. Years later, he felt God telling him to return to the very land where he was enslaved – and as he obeyed, many were converted to the Christian faith.

Even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ.

Ephesians 2:5

Some may wonder at Patrick’s ability to return to Ireland, serve faithfully and preach the gospel, but he is an example of what Jesus did for all people. Today’s verse said that Christ died for those dead in their sins. He doesn’t wait for a person to get his act together to come to Him. Instead, when one comes to Him, He is the one who changes a person from the inside out.

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W. – Pit Stop

In 2006, Mark Batterson published the book In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day. The book’s title is taken from an obscure passage in the Bible (II Samuel 23:20-21) where Benaiah, considered one of David’s mighty men, chases a lion into a pit and kills him. The theme of Batterson’s book is that perhaps your biggest problem, failure or fear is really your greatest opportunity.

They flung me alive into the pit and cast stones on me.

Lamentations 3:53

In today’s verse, the writer says he’s been hunted and thrown into a pit by his enemies. Although he felt all was lost, he still called on the name of the Lord. He was allowed that privilege, as every child of God is, because the Lord is faithful.

Perhaps you feel “in the pits” today. Whether you are there accidentally, as a consequence of your own actions, or because you charged into it head first, God knows you are there. Call to Him in prayer. Though all may seem hopeless, God can use your worst circumstances for His greatest glory. Pray also for His great faithfulness to be known to the nation’s citizens and leaders.

A just-married man was sent by his wife to the store to pick up a ham. When he returned, his wife was aggravated he had failed to ask the butcher to cut off the end of the ham. “Why would you want the end cut off?” he asked. “Because,” the wife replied, “my mother always did it that way, and that’s good enough for me.” Unsatisfied, the man asked his mother-in-law about it. She replied that she was following the procedure her own mother had taught. At the next family gathering the young man – determined to get to the bottom of this three-generation culinary secret – asked the grandmother why she cut off the end of the ham. “Well, my roaster was too small to cook it in one piece,” she replied.

If with Christ you died…why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations.

Colossians 2:20

The church in the city of Colossae had been broken apart by false teachers who were mandating all sorts of rules that were wrongheaded and unscriptural. The apostle Paul’s message was, “You don’t have to do it that way anymore.”

Follow God, not man. Take your marching orders from Christ, and pray that America’s leaders may do the same.

Can you guess what the television characters Phil Coulson (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D), Buffy Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), John Locke (LOST), Fox Mulder (The X Files), Rory Williams (Doctor Who), and Bobby Ewing (Dallas) have in common? They were all brought back to life. But these examples are only fictional.

If I am still alive, show me the steadfast love of the Lord, that I may not die.

I Samuel 20:14

There are many real examples in the Bible of people raised to life. Elijah raised a widow’s son (I Kings 17). Elisha raised the Shunammite’s son (II Kings 4). Jesus raised a widow’s son in Nain (Luke 7), Jairus’ daughter (Mark 5), and Lazarus (John 11) from the dead. Peter raised Dorcas from the dead (Acts 9). Most importantly, God raised Jesus (Acts 2:24).

Presidential Prayer Team; C.H.- Prepping

Did you know around 3.7 million Americans consider themselves preppers? Preppers are people who believe a catastrophic event is likely to happen in the future and prepare for it. These survivalists spend thousands of dollars on food, clothing, shelter and water readying for the end of times.

Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them…to meet the Lord.

I Thessalonians 4:17

Today’s passage also speaks of the end of times. The apostle Paul wrote of a day when Christ will return, starting what some call the Apocalypse. Paul tells the church at Thessalonica, “The Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.” (I Thessalonians 4:16) He goes on to describe how those believers alive on the Earth will rise to meet Jesus in the clouds.

Christ will return. How are you prepping for His arrival? Are you sharing His love with others? Pray for God to “prep” the hearts of your fellow Americans and your national leaders to proclaim Him the one true God.

Eschatology – it is the exploration of “end things” taken from two Greek words meaning “last” and “study,” whether the end of a life or the end of an age or the end of the world. Christian eschatology is the study of the end of the Kingdom of God on Earth. Maybe you’ve noticed many people today are almost obsessed with figuring out what happens at the end.

Yet I will leave some of you alive…when you are scattered through the countries.

Ezekiel 6:8

Scripture is clear that however long God’s people are alive on Earth, whether they are together or scattered about, they will encounter trials, persecutions and trouble of every kind. Through those difficulties, God somehow refines His followers and accomplishes His purposes in the watching world. Instead of ease and deliverance, God offers His presence as the sustaining power for enduring suffering during hard times.

Don’t get caught up in nit picking about God’s plan for ending time. Dedicate yourself to bearing the testimony of Jesus Christ today, in the circumstances of your present life. Pray for courageous leaders to rise up across America with a resolve to uphold the name of Jesus regardless of the cost, remaining alive and faithful to the end…whenever that may be.

Suppose you go for a checkup and your dentist makes this offer: “Your teeth are just fine,” he says, “but I have a dental student here today, and I would like her to perform a root canal on you so she can get some practice.” You’d surely jump out of the chair and be gone in a flash. But what if the dentist adds, “and we are going to reward you with one million dollars for this experience.” Suddenly, your thinking changes dramatically. Nobody wants a root canal, but for a million bucks? The pain would be short-lived – maybe a few days. But a million dollars would change your life for a long, long time.

For Christ also suffered once for sins…put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.

You may have heard the phrase, “Pride goes before a fall.” The actual Bible verse says, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18) Nebuchadnezzar experienced this when he was king of Babylon. God gave him greatness, glory and splendor. Today’s verse gives a description of the power he had over his subjects. Yet when Nebuchadnezzar became proud, God reduced him to an animal-like state for seven years.

Whom he would, he killed, and whom he would, he kept alive.

Presidential Prayer Team; H.L.M. – Love Crowds Evil

Seventeen-year-old Ryan had recently graduated from high school and planned to enter college in the fall. He was a handsome, loving and talented young man. But one day Ryan became the fatal victim of a robbery. Ryan’s grandfather believed this senseless murder was not part of God’s plan.

The woman whose son was alive said to the king…“Oh, my lord, give her the living child.”

I Kings 3:26

As he tried to process Ryan’s death, he asked, “What led the killers to tear a hole in the glory of God’s world? The only answer that came to me was that evil had taken root in their lives because love was not there to crowd it out. Many people who commit crimes against their neighbors have not experienced God’s love through their interactions with others. Much of the violence in life can be prevented if we Christians extend love to all people.”

If people never experience the love of a parent, a kind neighbor, a loving church family, or even the kindness of a stranger, it’s difficult for them to understand the Lord’s love. Take opportunities to reach out and be the hands and feet of Jesus to others. Pray that Christians also demonstrate God’s love to America’s leaders through their words, actions and prayers.

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W- The Elected

The 2016 presidential election campaign season is in full swing, and already many hopefuls have been left wanting. The Democratic Party began with six potential candidates; the Republican Party with 17, the largest presidential field in American history. Now, fewer remain and the attrition will continue until only one from each party are left alive in the race for the White House.

In the whole land…two thirds shall be cut off and perish, and one third shall be left alive.

Zechariah 13:8

In the verses preceding today’s scripture, the Lord promised to eradicate idolatry and those who honored them, leading to most of the people perishing. Those remaining would be tested and refined. Many believe these verses reference the Jewish nation during the Roman wars, or the yet-to-be-fulfilled prophecy of Christ’s return when only an elected, faithful few will remain.

Only two presidential candidates will make it through the campaign process. Those remaining will undergo testing, perhaps proving their worthiness for future political races. As you pray today, ask God to intervene by refining the candidates. Pray that the next president will be one who honors Jesus, and that the Lord will aid you by guiding your vote.

Presidential Prayer Team; – First Person Testimony

He is alive! He’s risen! Jesus lives! Up from the grave He arose! When Easter comes around, you hear many of these phrases from Christians. More than likely, you’ll see them posted on social media with images of the cross or an empty tomb. As powerful as those statements are, they are in third person. How much more powerful are they when spoken in the first person from the lips of Jesus Himself?

The living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore.

Revelation 1:17-18

Today’s passage is spoken by Jesus. It’s not one of the disciples saying, “He is alive!” It’s the Son of God Himself stating the truth – and that’s a powerful testimony! The apostle John heard this straight from His Lord – and you can, too! “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)

Jesus is alive and sits at the right hand of God. Give thanks today for your risen Savior. You serve a God who lives in your life and in the lives of Christ-following Americans. Pray that your national leaders will hear the truth from the Almighty – in first person.

Are you up for a turpentine spa? Or how about a live leech detox? A sobering statistic for Americans shows that approximately 39.6 percent of adults will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetime. In response, a massive preventative health care industry has sprung up with an exhaustive and sometimes bizarre array of treatments.

All the prosperous of the earth…shall bow…even the one who could not keep himself alive.

Psalm 22:29

While you may spare yourself from physical illness, there is one disease you cannot successfully treat on your own. In the book of Romans it say’s all people have sinned and come short of God’s holiness. The consequence of your sin is death and separation from God. Yet some people claim you can earn spiritual acceptance by being super good, joining a special group, or by believing that you are actually in control of the universe.

The Bible is very clear that Creator-God alone provides the remedy for your problem with sin. He allows Jesus to cover your malignant sin-disease with His perfect sacrifice. In compassion, God exchanges Jesus’ life for your death. Today, pray for leaders across America to acknowledge God’s treatment plan for their sin to discover eternal life and hope in Christ.

“The proof is in the pudding,” says an old idiom. However, the original phrase is, “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.” This dates back to the fourteenth century and it referred to sausage meat inside the casing, not a dessert. The shortened version dates back to the 1920’s and wasn’t used in the United States until the 1950’s. The proverb means that you can’t tell something is a success or not until you see the results.

He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them.

Acts 1:3

Jesus proved He was the Son of God. He healed the sick, raised the dead and He Himself died and rose again. Despite many proofs, people still harden their hearts. Jesus often referred to those who don’t have spiritual ears to hear and eyes to see.

The apostle Paul writes, “The god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel.” (II Corinthians 4:4) Ask the Lord to open the spiritual eyes and ears of the leaders and people of this nation to see and hear the proven truth of Christ and His resurrection.

In life, many good things come in pairs. The Earth and sky. Arms and legs. Ice cream and cake. You can likely name many more.

The animals according to their kinds…two of every sort shall come in to you to keep them alive.

Genesis 6:20

In Genesis, God asked Noah to help Him preserve the world by keeping pairs of animals fed, nourished, and alive during a global catastrophe. You might be inclined to believe you are not called personally to do something big like Noah, but think again. Today you probably know several “pairs” struggling to keep their relationships alive. The divorce rate in America is close to 50 percent.

aving an impact on marriage in America doesn’t require a degree in counseling, but a commitment to prayer. Start at the top with President Obama, then pray for members of Congress from each state, and don’t forget local officials and church leaders. Ask God to lead couples across the land in discovering His purpose and presence in their marriage commitments. As you can see, it’s a large job, and like Noah you will probably need a little help. Invite a friend to pair up with you this week in praying for life and health to infuse marriages in America.

Presidential Prayer Team; G.C.- Peace

If you tapped open your news feed and read “Peace Declared upon Earth,” would you immediately think it was a joke or maybe some kind of advertising? World peace is almost unimaginable today, but someday that headline will be the truth.

He makes peace in your borders; he fills you with the finest of the wheat.

Psalm 147:14

Jesus’ birth marked the point in history when such peace became possible. The angels even advertised it by crying, “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace.” (Luke 2:14) God’s Son born under that proclamation will one day rule as king over the people and nations of Earth and establish global peace. The prophet Isaiah foretold of that magnificent time saying that the government will be “upon his shoulder” as He leads the people as their counselor, Lord, and “Prince of Peace.”
