Presidential Prayer Team; J.R. – Stoned Survivor

Angel Alvarez holds a New York City record…and it’s probably not one you want to take away from him. In 2011 during a botched drug deal, Alvarez was shot repeatedly by an assailant and the police – a total of 26 times. Yet somehow he survived, which as far as anyone knows is a feat unmatched in the Big Apple. Alvarez’ nickname among friends now is “Swiss Cheese,” and he reportedly has a lot of trouble getting through metal detectors.

When they arrived and gathered the church together, they declared all that God had done for them.

Acts 14:27

What’s so notable about the apostle Paul taking the time to joyfully declare “all that God had done” for him? He’d just been through an experience not unlike that of Angel Alvarez. Paul had been stoned by an angry crowd and left for dead. But miraculously he rose up, and then went right back to the work God had called him to do…counting it all a blessing.

Do you trust that God will bring about a good result even through bad circumstances? He will – for those who love and serve Him. That’s the key…not for you only, but for America and its leaders. Make that your prayer today!

Presidential Prayer Team; G.C.- Debt Dealings

President Herbert Hoover humorously said, “Blessed are the young, for they shall inherit the national debt”…and today it is hovering around $18 trillion. Headlines convey fear over foreign holders of that debt. Less is written about the biggest owner of American debt – the Social Security Trust Fund. The United States Treasury manages about 30 percent of federal debt, payable to about 230 separate federal agencies. America is in debt largely to the future.

Owe no one anything, except to love each other.

Romans 13:8

The apostle Paul lived in a Roman political economy built on the psychology of debt. As an example, to advance in government, one had to work diligently to put someone with power and influence into their debt, then start calling in favors. Paul made a radically countercultural statement when he told first century Christians not to owe anyone anything except love.

The challenge remains today. Examine your life. Look for similar “give to get” scenarios. Are you obedient to God’s commands only to win His favor, or have you discovered the debt of love you owe? Pray for America’s next generation to embrace financial stability as well as to discover their debt of love to Christ for His gift of salvation and for His mercy upon America.

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W. – One Decision

Can a Godly heritage that impacts an entire nation start with the decision or actions of just one person? Yes! One example is King David. David, who established Jerusalem, was a man after God’s own heart. He was also the great grandson of Boaz and Ruth. But how did he come to know about God in the first place?

Where you go I will go…Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.

Ruth 1:16

Today’s verse explains it stemmed from a decision made generations earlier by one woman. Ruth, David’s great grandmother, was so moved by her mother-in-law Naomi’s faith, she chose to leave her homeland and family to travel to an unknown land and accept Naomi’s God. That decision, to begin a Godly heritage, has lasting impact even today.

America’s first leader, George Washington, also established a Godly heritage for the United States. He dedicated the country to God in his inaugural address in 1789. Even though the nation has strayed since, just as some of David’s descendants did, it only takes one decision to redirect the future – the decision to follow God. Start doing your part today by praying for yourself and the nation to have a Godly heritage that will make a lasting impact for generations to come.

Presidential Prayer Team; H.L.M. – True Foundation

Walt Disney personally recruited the late Dean Jones in 1965 for a role in the movie That Darn Cat. The rising young star appeared to have everything the world could offer, but he was depressed and suicidal. “It was a fast track life,” said Jones. “I was making $50,000 a week. I had the Ferraris and beautiful women and all the rest of what I thought would satisfy my life. And it was empty. Really empty.”

Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like.

Luke 6:47

But the still small voice of the Lord told him his current lifestyle “will never satisfy you.” After a drunk-driving accident nearly took his life, Jones cried out to Him: “I’ve done everything in this world I thought would make me happy and it doesn’t work. I have everything and I have nothing.” Jones said “yes” to God and true peace flooded his heart.

The Bible is the only true foundation for life. Thank your Heavenly Father for those godly role models in Hollywood past and present who seek Him daily. Pray also that your national and local leaders will base their lives and decisions on the truth of God’s Word.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.P. – Grace Gratefulness

November is a month Americans are reminded to be thankful for the many blessings God has given this nation. People list family, friends, homes, health and material possessions as things to be grateful for. In today’s verse, Paul thanks God for the people He ministered to, those who received God’s grace in Christ.

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you.

I Corinthians 1:4

Grace is often defined as God’s undeserved favor, but it is so much more than that. Grace is the ability to do God’s will (Philippians 2:13). It extends God’s love (II Thessalonians 2:16) and forgiveness of sin (Romans 5:20) to mankind. Grace enables people to fellowship with God (Hebrews 4:16) and invites all to live forever (John 3:16). Through God’s grace, Christians love others (I John 4:19).

This Thanksgiving month, praise God in gratefulness for His grace and for those who have already received it. Thank Him for your brothers and sisters in Christ. Then pray for everyone you know who have yet to receive God’s grace through Jesus. Ask for the eyes of this nation to turn to Him in humble gratitude.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.H. – Light Therapy

Ancient Egypt, ancient Greece and ancient Rome were among those who practiced heliotherapy or the use of light as therapy to heal. That practice is still around today in a variety of forms – one being the bili light to treat jaundice in premature babies. In the presence of a special blue light, the infants are able to rid their bodies of too much bilirubin.

As many as touched it were made well.

Matthew 14:36

The presence of God, through Jesus, healed people, too. Christ said, “I am the light of the world.” (John 8:12) His light heals all sickness and pain. In today’s passage, the people of Gennesaret asked to touch the hem of Christ’s clothes. God’s presence was so mighty that even the garments on Jesus’ body were full of His power.

Every time you pray, you enter God’s throne room and are ushered into His presence…and in His presence, there is power. Remember when Moses returned from being with God on Mt. Sinai? His face glowed! Pray for God’s people to spend so much time with Him that their faces reflect His light and start a healing process for this nation and its leaders.

Presidential Prayer Team; H.L.M.- Heart for Prayer

One of the most recognized women of the Old Testament, Deborah was known for her wisdom and her courage as a military leader. Faced with 900 chariots of iron, Deborah’s army of 10,000 Israelites rushed down from the hills and clashed with the Canaanite general Sisera near the Kishon River. The battle was a total victory and the army of Sisera was destroyed.

Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time.

Judges 4:4

Deborah also influenced the people to live for the Lord after the battle was over. She was a prophetess whose main role was to encourage the people to obey Him. Deborah was a mighty prayer warrior who aroused the people of Israel from their lethargy and despair.

Although the phrase is not found in Scripture, a “prayer warrior” is generally thought of as a Christian who prays continually for others. Prayer warriors have a heart for God, a heart for prayer, a heart for people, and a heart for this nation. Thank your Heavenly Father today for the Godly heritage He has given America. Intercede as a prayer warrior for those national and local leaders who love Him. Ask God to give them wisdom and courage to make righteous decisions every day.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R. – Minimum Wage, Maximum Happiness

You’ve just landed a new job and are sitting down with Human Resources to work out an acceptable salary. “Now,” the H.R. manager says, “we have two annual salary options for this position. We can pay you either $39,156 or $7,308. Since we want you to be happy, we are offering you $7,308 per year. Welcome aboard!”

Accept my blessing…because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough.

Genesis 33:11

If that sounds nonsensical, consider this: The average annual wage in the United States is $39,156. The average annual wage in Mexico is $7,308. Yet the “World Happiness Report,” which is a scientifically-based, expansive study conducted internationally, found that Mexicans rank higher in happiness than U.S. citizens. “Happiness” was measured by the ability to stay positive, recover from negative feelings, care about and spend time with family and friends, and allow one’s self to be “captured” by emotions like joy and awe.

After a long history of scheming, Jacob realized that all he really needed was the love of his family. With that, he said, “I have enough.” As you pray for America today, remember that peace and contentment will come not with more things…but from more love.

Presidential Prayer Team; G.C. – Pray, Vote and Watch

The 1994 Wyoming race for House of Representatives ended in a tie. Republican Randall Luthi and Independent Larry Call agreed to a recount and the results were the same – dead even. Governor Mike Sullivan proposed a quick way to decide the race. He wrote each man’s name on a ping-pong ball, put them both in his cowboy hat, and pulled one out. Luthi’s name was drawn that day and he went on to serve for 13 years, eventually becoming Wyoming’s Speaker of the House.

The Lord said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do.”

Exodus 6:1

In Exodus, God sends Moses to the powerful Pharaoh over Egypt with a message to free His enslaved people…or else. Pharaoh’s advisers assured him no one had more power than he, and not to be concerned. Eventually, God speaks candidly to Moses the words of today’s verse – and the rest is familiar history.

As you cast your vote today, you are a faithful messenger. It’s not an elected official or chance drawing determining the future of America. God continues to unfold His providential plan to reveal His risen Son, Jesus Christ, and deliver people from darkness. Pray, vote, and then watch and see what He is doing.

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W. – Miracle Faith

The book Miracles in American History by Susie Federer tells 32 stories of answered prayers for the nation and its leaders during difficult circumstances. Desperate situations during the French and Indian War, the Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War, World Wars I and II and the Korean War all have amazing stories of God’s response to prayers. Dire situations were changed through His intervention.

Whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

Mark 11:24

This should not be surprising when you consider today’s verse. Jesus cursed a fig tree the day before and it withered. The disciples were amazed, but He told them they only needed to have faith. He instructed them to believe whenever they prayed, and they would receive. Miracles can happen with faith, belief and prayer.

Would you like to see an amazing turnaround in the situation of this nation? Start praying and believing for its leaders today. Pray also for your fellow citizens to come to know Christ and for a revival to begin in America.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.P. – Thankful Remembrance

Humans are quick to forget the blessings they receive. They thank God when things are good, but grumble, complain and succumb to fear when things are bad – as if God had never showed them any care.

And those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal.

Joshua 4:20

God knew how quickly His people forgot His miraculous provisions. He told Joshua to have a man from each of the twelve tribes take a stone out of the river where the priests stood while the Lord held the water back. After the people crossed over, Joshua said, “When your children ask their fathers in times to come, ‘What do these stones mean?’ then you shall let your children know, ‘Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground…so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, that you may fear the Lord your God forever.” (Joshua 4:21, 22, 24)

During this month of Thanksgiving, construct a memorial: a list, a poster, a rock pile. Remember what the Lord has done for you and this country, and remind your children and grandchildren. Continue to pray for the leaders and people of this nation to turn to God, the giver of all good things (James 1:17).

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W. – Simple Solution

Doubt and anxiety go hand in hand and there is no shortage of it in America. Nearly 40 million people suffer from an anxiety disorder. People in biblical times suffered from doubt and anxiety, too. Elijah doubted God’s protection and fled from Jezebel (I Kings 19:3), Zechariah doubted the angel’s news of a son (Luke 1:18), John the Baptist doubted who Christ was (Matthew 11:3), Peter doubted on the water and almost sank (Matthew 14:30), and Thomas doubted Christ was risen (John 20:25). But in all these situations, God overcame their doubt.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything…let your requests be made known to God.

Philippians 4:6

Today’s verse gives instructions for facing doubt. Paul says not to be anxious but with thanksgiving, pray to the Lord. The outcome will always be that “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)

Are you struggling with doubt and fear? You can experience unexplainable peace if you take it to Christ in prayer. Thank Him for His blessings, ask for what you need, and then trust Him to take care of it. Pray, too, for the leaders of this country to come to this simple solution to experiencing peace.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R. – Name Games

Leonard Skinner, a Jacksonville, Florida teacher, didn’t care much for hippies. When boys arrived for his class with shaggy hair, he sent them off to the principal’s office where they were suspended and ordered to get crew cuts or something close to it. This was back in the 1960s when educators could actually set rules and discipline students without being immediately subjected to lawsuits.

And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations.

Ezekiel 36:23

A group of Mr. Skinner’s long-haired, recalcitrant students later formed a rock band and decided to get even with him. They named their band Lynyrd Skynyrd, a derisive play on his name, and went on to record such hits as Sweet Home Alabama. Skinner, for his part, took it in stride, eventually rekindling a friendship with his once-embittered former students.

It is a far more serious matter to profane the great name of God. He promises that in such cases He will surely make Himself known to the nations. As you intercede for America and your leaders, pray that they may honor God in their governing…and may your words and deeds today be not a profanity, but a sweet testimony to His holiness.

Presidential Prayer Team; H.L.M.  – Weak Yet Strong

Ten years ago, Brian Nichols went on a murderous rampage at the Fulton County Courthouse in downtown Atlanta. He killed four people and injured others. Hours later, Nichols took Ashley Smith, a widowed young mother, hostage in her apartment. Smith was struggling with life and with a drug addiction. Yet God gave her the courage to remain calm during the ordeal. After several hours, she asked Nichols if she could read the book, The Purpose Driven Life. Nichols conceded and told her to read it out loud. Eventually, Ashley was able to leave the apartment and Nichols was arrested.

He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.

Isaiah 40:29

“I really believe that God spared my life because He wanted me to go around the world and tell people that He changed me,” said Smith. “You know, I didn’t do anything in my apartment that night but lay down my brokenness to God and He’s brought me to a very different place in my life in the last 10 years.”

As you spend time with the Lord, ask Him for His unlimited strength during your times of weakness. Pray also that your nation’s leaders will depend on God for their needs.

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W. – A Reason to Doubt

Paul Tillich, one of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century, said, “Doubt isn’t the opposite of faith; it’s an element of faith.” Everyone struggles with doubt, but maybe that’s not a bad thing. Doubt helps grow your faith. If you are never placed in difficult circumstances, your faith doesn’t get tested or stretched.

It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me…I live by faith in the Son of God.

Galatians 2:20

If anyone had reason to doubt, it was Paul. He suffered health problems, beatings, imprisonment, riots, hunger and thirst, sleepless nights, being lied about, robbed and shipwrecked. Yet amazingly his faith grew stronger. He could not have done this in his own power. His secret was today’s verse. Paul said he lived through Christ in Him.

Are trials and hardships causing you to doubt? Instead of dealing with situations on your own, allow Jesus to live through you. He will help you see your circumstances as a way to increase your faith instead of your doubt. Pray, too, for the unrest and disorder in America to raise the faith of Christians throughout the nation.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.P.  – Standing Out

When Zechariah prophesied about the restoration of Israel, he said that in those days people would grab hold of a Jew’s robe and want to go with them because they heard that God was with them (Zechariah 8:23). When Peter and John answered the Scribes and Pharisees with boldness, the religious leaders took note that the apostles had been with Jesus (Acts 4:13).

Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.

Zechariah 4:6

A life that is centered in Christ will be evident to others. Jesus said, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35) Even more, God is not just with believers in Him; His Holy Spirit resides within them (I Corinthians 6:19).

Are you living your life through His indwelling Spirit in such a way that you stand out from the crowd? Do people know you are a Christian because of your love? If not, abide in Him through prayer, read the Bible and practice acts of kindness. Trust that God will accomplish His will through you by His Spirit. Then pray for the eyes of people in America to be opened to see the love of Jesus in the Christians around them.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.K. – Faithful Patience

Many have said that you should never pray for patience…it will encourage the Lord to test your faith in many ways. But steadfastness, described as a life of faithfulness amid troubles and afflictions, may require a great deal of patience. The Rev. George Horne, an English churchman in the 1700s, provided this definition: “Patience is the guardian of faith, the preserver of peace, the cherisher of love, the teacher of humility. Patience governs the flesh, strengthens the spirit, sweetens the temper, stifles anger, extinguishes envy, subdues pride; she bridles the tongue, restrains the hand, tramples upon temptations, endures persecutions, consummates martyrdom.”

Let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

James 1:4

The apostle Paul tells us as Christians “to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God…Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God.” (Romans 12:1-2) James says to “count it all joy” when you are tested (James 1:2) so that you gain the full effect of God’s plan for you.

Be faithful. Pray for others enduring trials – and for this nation’s leaders facing impossible decisions, that they may never doubt God’s goodness and grace.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.P. – Fruitful Prayers

How often do you pray for others? What do you pray for? Notice that Paul didn’t intercede for health and prosperity. He prayed for the believers’ character. He prayed that their work and acts inspired by faith for His glory would be fruitful. It is good to pray for each other’s well-being; however, do not neglect more important matters.

To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling.

II Thessalonians 1:11

In order for Christians to be more like God and serve Him with good works, believers need to pray for one another. What people do you know who are standing for their faith? What are you doing for the Lord’s glory that has been initiated by your faith? What more can you do to make a difference for Him in the lives of others?

Pray for all of the workers in the harvest field of America. Intercede that they will be worthy of their calling. Then pray that your work will be fruitful for His kingdom, and for the citizens and leaders of this country to turn to the Lord. Finally, pray that religious freedom will not be quenched in America.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.K. – Do Wrong, Refuse Right

Satan can lead you where you do not want to go. “For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.” (Romans 7:19) However, if your goal is to do what the Lord commands, even if you’re not sure what that is, Benjamin Franklin’s advice, “When in doubt, don’t,” is good to follow.

The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.

I Timothy 1:5

Paul charged Timothy to keep his heart pure and his conscience aware of what was good – and to be ready to do it – in order to have his service acceptable to God. The heart can harden if you know what you are doing is wrong or if you refuse to do what is right. If you are guided by the words of Scripture and seek the Lord’s will in prayer, your faith can be sincere…one that never doubts God’s mercy nor waivers in times of distress.

Hold firm to your faith. Intercede for those in this nation who have strayed…doubting God’s goodness and grace. Then with a pure heart and a good conscience, seek to do what is right and acceptable to the Lord.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R. – Wisdom in Waiting

What good is waiting? For one thing, it makes for a better president. At least that’s what America’s Founding Fathers believed when they set the minimum age of 35 as a requirement for the White House occupant. This rule, wrote founder and statesman John Jay, “confines the electors to men of whom the people have had time to form a judgment, and with respect to whom they will not be liable to be deceived by those brilliant appearances of genius and patriotism, which, like transient meteors, sometimes mislead as well as dazzle.”

The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.

Lamentations 3:25

Age and experience, of course, don’t guarantee wisdom, but they usually help. If you think about some of the prayers you prayed 10 or 20 years ago, you likely will realize in retrospect that some of them were misguided. You may even thank God now that He chose in His infinite wisdom not to answer them affirmatively.

Today, as you intercede for America and approach God with your needs, do so with a willingness to wait…recognizing it may be what you need to do, even if it may not be what you want to do. Waiting – and seeking God in the process – will make for a better Christian.
