The people in Nehemiah 10 agreed to honor God by giving Him the firstfruits of their produce and income, including, in verse 37, the firstfruits of their dough. We should do the same. Of course, in Nehemiah’s day the word “dough” was literal. They harvested their crops, ground their grain, and brought the first portions of their dough to the Lord. In this way, they worshiped God and also provided for the needs of those tending His temple.

Reginald Heber was pastor of an Anglican Church in the village of Hodnet, in a church once led by his father. Between 1811 and 1821, Reginald wrote 57 hymns, which he longed to see published; but the Anglicans hadn’t yet adopted the singing of hymns in worship. Heber packed away his hymns and sailed as a missionary to India, where he labored with intensity for a few short years before passing away at age 42. His hymns were published after his death, and one is famous to this day: “Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee.”

Afterward, urged by his men, he went to the Jordan and humbly dipped into its muddy waters seven times. He came up the seventh time healed.

Confession of sin is multifaceted, but there is a core principle. It is not sorrow, guilt, or shame. It is agreement. The Greek translation for “confess” is made of two words: homos means “same,” and lego means “say or speak.” So, to confess means “to say the same thing as.” As who? As God! We don’t inform God of our sins by confessing them. He already knows what we have done. Our greatest need is to humbly agree with Him: “Father, You call what I did ‘sin’ and I agree with You.”

Others can tell a lot about us by our eyes. If we have dark circles, we’re probably fatigued or struggling with a thyroid problem. Bloodshot eyes can indicate eyestrain or even glaucoma. If our eyes are yellowish, we may have liver disease. Puffy eyes indicate too much salt. Our moods and emotions also show up in our eyes, which are the mirrors of our souls.

The best way to keep our spiritual eyes healthy is by directing them to God’s Word. When we read and ponder the Scripture, it enlightens our eyes. To have a vibrant life in Christ is to know and obey God’s Word. The psalmist taught us to pray, “Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law” (Psalm 119:18).
