Ravi Zacharias Ministry – The Bird Still Sings

Years ago I read a powerful essay by my favorite essayist, F.W. Boreham, called “The Candle and The Bird.” With his brilliant sweep of knowledge of God’s working in history, Boreham traces how revivals have spread from continent to continent, how when the brilliant flame of God’s moving in the hearts of people seemed to be dying out in one place there would be a fresh spark igniting a God-breathed revival elsewhere. From Germany through Zinzendorf to England through Wesley and Whitfield to Wales and Scotland, and then to the Evangelical Awakening in America, it is fascinating to see how God has done His work through times and seasons and locations. Boreham distinguishes between extinguishing a candle and chasing away a bird: when you extinguish a candle, the light goes out; when you chase away a bird, it sings its song from another bough. Hence, his title “The Candle and The Bird”—a beautiful metaphor.

In America now it is fashionable to mock the bird of evangelicalism and try to silence it. But the song is being sung on other boughs and historic movements are taking place. In China, Korea, and the Middle East, places where once the gospel’s saving message seemed to be extinguished, churches are packed with hungry hearts, the youth listening to the gospel message with rapt attention. In countries where there was once hostility, crowds fill the auditoriums. In Romania, where to believe in God was once to put one’s life at risk, ten thousand filled the auditorium in which I spoke. From senators and other political leaders there we heard of the dark days of the past and of the shining hope of the future. We prayed in chambers once inhabited by a tyrant and were told this was probably the first time a prayer had been publicly uttered. They have witnessed what Christ-less lives can birth, shattering their countries and their hopes. They can now see that the only possible hope for transforming a heart is Jesus Christ.

But mistakes were made across history and we still have not learned. When the gospel was first taken into places like India and China in the 18th and 19th centuries, it often came on the wings of western political expansionism and the so-called “gunboat diplomacy.” That incongruous combination spelt disaster for both groups. Political imperialism soon lost out, and with it went the missionary effort, seen as being in cahoots with political demagoguery. In a staggering change, now the agents of demagoguery are carrying a different message, basically, “We in America have evicted Christian values and beliefs. We have replaced them with naturalistic assumptions. Mores and the sacred are things of the past. We have silenced those voices … and so must you; if you don’t, you will forfeit all the monetary support we would otherwise give you.” Yes, that is what is happening, and rather than being an influence for good in the world, America is becoming a purveyor of ungodliness.

What those with this monetary “gun-to-the-head” attitude don’t realize is that other countries have seen through this hollowness, and what was once a respected nation is now viewed as a valueless paper machine sinking because it has lost its faith and values. They know it. They say it. They remind us of the emptiness of freedom without responsibility. We are too blind to admit that our gradual collapse has come walking in lockstep with our irreligious handmaiden, toward our disintegration. Jesus cautioned us about such scandalous blindness.

But there is good news. The very nations that evicted “gunboat” missions are now receiving the message of Jesus without the gunboat. Those giving heed to the gunboat of naturalism will accept the gunboat’s benefits but reject the naturalism it insists on because they have already been there and know why they were sinking and in need of assistance. I have had sheiks and mullahs tell me, “Please don’t stop coming; we need you here. We need Christians here.” Those were the very words to me a few years ago from the now assassinated Chief of Intelligence in Syria. He knew the healing balm of Jesus Christ was needed and as we left him, the church leader with me expressed his amazement at hearing such an admission. It just could not be made in public.

The church in China is the fastest growing church in the world. One professor in China told a Christian colleague, a friend of mine, “Stop criticizing Marxism…. It left the souls of the people empty, which is why they are listening to you now.” I can just hear a generation from now someone telling the next generation of preachers in America, “Stop criticizing naturalism. It has left the souls of people empty, which is why they are listening to you now.”

Ironically, in a powerful piece published some years ago in his very popular column in England, self-proclaimed atheist Matthew Parris said that after he had revisited Malawi where he had grown up, he was convinced against his ideological commitment to atheism that what Africa needs is not more aid but the gospel of Jesus Christ, which alone changes hearts. He admitted to speaking with a schizoid struggle, yet he strongly believed that the only hope for Africa was the Evangel: the gospel of Jesus Christ. He ended his article in The Times of December 27, 2008, “Removing Christian evangelism from the African equation may leave the continent at the mercy of a malign fusion of Nike, the witch doctor, the mobile phone and the machete.” That, from an atheist is profoundly powerful.

The bird is singing from different boughs … it is not silent. In a twist, down the road our rabid atheism here may one day awaken society to what it has squandered. Yes, it can happen that the bird will start singing again in Washington, New York, Los Angeles, and throughout this land. You would be amazed at the letters we get expressing the disillusionment of people from within their own worldview without values and without God. One professor in California told me that when he was young, he was a radical activist for all the causes that challenged our shared meanings of the past. Now in his veteran years he deeply regrets that wrongheaded life of his youth.

The bird still sings its songs. We hear it and see it as we travel—and I would be remiss if I did not say “many thanks to all our supporters” who make it possible for our team to get to these places.

The words of Arthur Hugh Clough say it well:

For while the tired waves, vainly breaking,

Seem here no painful inch to gain,

Far back, through creeks and inlets making,

Comes silent, flooding in, the main.

And not by eastern windows only,

When daylight comes, comes in the light;

In front the sun climbs slow, how slowly!

But westward, look, the land is bright!

The mockery will not have the last laugh. You see, dancing on the grave of an extinguished Christianity is farcical at best. Because the grave is empty. And the one who knows the way out of the grave sits in the heavens and laughs.

Presidential Prayer Team; G.C. – Amazing Plans

 

When America’s forefathers were anticipating the future of their fledgling nation, they could not possibly have imagined the cultural and economic complexities challenging America today. John Adams, though, acknowledged the source and power behind their vision of the future: “the right to freedom, being the gift of God Almighty, is not in the power of Man to alienate.”

He said to them, “Hear this dream that I have dreamed.”

Genesis 37:6

In the Bible, God had big plans for a man named Joseph. He gave him dreams about a place of service and honor being prepared specifically for him. Joseph’s aspirations to fulfill God’s plan made him a target for resentment. His adversaries thought they could derail both his dreams and God’s purposes by contriving to have Joseph imprisoned and enslaved. They succeeded in putting Joseph in prison – but ultimately his enemy’s antics merely served to prepare Joseph for God’s amazing plans.

Mortal man is not the author and finisher of your story…or of America’s future. Regardless of what you see happening in the news today, be assured that no evil can upend God’s purposes and plans. Be confident and committed to pray for the nation’s leaders today.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R. – Undercover Christians

 

When Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederate States of America, was captured at the conclusion of the American Civil War, a rumor spread that he had been “disguised in woman’s clothing” in an attempt to evade arrest. It wasn’t true, but was rather someone’s attempt to add just a little more humiliation to a defeated foe by casting him as an abject coward. Soon the northern newspapers began running merciless cartoons of Davis, depicting him in a long skirt and head scarf.

Everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God.

Luke 12:8

Unless you are employed by the CIA or working in drug enforcement, hiding who you are is generally not an admirable trait. And these days, there are far too many undercover Christians. Are you living an authentic life as a follower of Christ? Has anyone noticed?

Today, ask God for an opportunity to show others who you are – not for your glorification, but for His. As you do this, He will acknowledge you before the angels…and you will point others in America to the Savior. Then focus your prayers on the nation’s leaders – and ask that they will discover the authentic life Christ offers to them.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R. – Miracle of Birth

 

“Did you ever see a cowboy film,” the novelist Marian Keyes was once asked by a friend, “where someone has been caught by the Indians and tied between two wild stallions, each pulling in opposite directions?” “Yes,” Marian said, nodding. “That’s a bit what giving birth is like.”

Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children?

Genesis 21:7

For all its pain, there is nothing as miraculous, incredible and hopeful as birth. America was very nearly destroyed by the Civil War, but Abraham Lincoln restored the nation’s spirits for the future when he spoke of a “new birth of freedom” in his Gettysburg Address. In John’s Gospel, Jesus’ concept of being “born again” left Nicodemus in wonderment. “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother‘s womb and be born?” Nicodemus asked the Savior. Abraham’s wife Sarah, far beyond her childbearing years, thought the idea that she would give birth was laughable and ludicrous…until God made it happen.

It’s not too late – for you, for America or for those you love who seem beyond hope. New birth will be possible, even inevitable, when God hears your faithful prayers!

Presidential Prayer Team; C.P. – Outcry

 

“If God doesn’t judge America, He would have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.” This quote is most commonly attributed to Ruth or Billy Graham. Some people argue the logic of it, saying God need not apologize to anyone. The statement is not to be taken literally, but to point out how sinful America has become.

For we are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against its people has become great.

Genesis 19:13

Today’s verse shows that God heard the outcry of the victims of Sodom and Gomorrah’s evil and injustice. God is just and will not let the wicked go unpunished. Aborted babies, beheaded Christians, and all of those who have been treated unfairly will see justice one day. In Revelation 6:10, those who were martyred for His name cry out, “How long!” If you have been wronged or have hurt someone, forgive and receive forgiveness, but know that everyone will give an account to God in Heaven of what they have done here on Earth.

Pray for the people of the United States to turn to God, stand for righteousness, and renounce evil. Intercede, too, for the nation’s leaders to intervene on behalf of all those who suffer injustice.

Presidential Prayer Team; G.C. – Someone Out There

 

America is a nation founded and nurtured on prayer. However, according to a recent Pew Report, prayer in America has “gone rogue.” In other words, anything goes: from spirit drumming to mystical chanting. People across the USA are praying, but most confess they are merely addressing “someone out there.”

We always pray for you, that our God…may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith.

II Thessalonians 1:11

In 1787, about five weeks into the Constitutional Convention, the framers were frustrated in their attempts to draft the U. S. Constitution. Benjamin Franklin challenged them to return earnestly in prayer to God on behalf of their nation. He asked, “If a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured that ‘except the Lord build the House, they labor in vain that build it.’”

God is still shaping America’s future in the hearts of those who seek Him. Today, pray specifically for those blindly praying to “someone” that they may discover the true identity of God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ; placing all hope for themselves, and for America, in His great power.

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W. – Stand As One

 

“Land of the free” is a phrase that’s been used for America since 1814 when Francis Scott Key penned the poem that would become the Star Spangled Banner. But how long will this freedom last? Abraham Lincoln said, “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” He knew that for people to remain free, they must nurture morality. America’s leaders aren’t the only ones who believe this. Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said, “Freedom will destroy itself if it is not exercised within some sort of moral framework, some body of shared beliefs, some spiritual heritage…”

The violence of the wicked will sweep them away, because they refuse to do what is just.

Proverbs 21:7

What happens to a person or country when morality and justice aren’t nurtured? Today’s verse says their own violence will sweep them away. Do you see evidence of this today in the United States? Turn on the news. Destruction lies where people refuse to do the right thing.

America’s history is filled with times it came together to fight for freedom. Pray for Americans and especially Christians to stand as one so the country will stay free – and not become as those described in today’s recommended reading.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R. – Forgotten History

 

A group concerned about America’s “fading heritage” called Intercollegiate Studies Institute conducts interviews and tests to determine how much Americans know about the nation’s history. One civic literacy exam has 60 multiple choice questions about topics that any first-year civics student should be able to handle with ease. The results were shocking. The general public averaged 49 percent on the exam. Elected officials scored five percentage points lower. College educators scored 55 percent and, in an interesting and appalling twist, at elite universities like Yale, Cornell, Princeton, Duke and Georgetown, freshmen students scored higher than seniors – a dynamic the Intercollegiate Studies Institute called “negative learning.”

Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight.

Proverbs 4:1

These sad results confirm that most Americans are utterly ignorant of the blessings, the courage, the sacrifices, the wisdom, and the instruction of the Founding Fathers. America’s early leaders were not perfect, but they have much to teach about faith, valor, and the way forward.

As you pray for your leaders, ask God to turn them back to the wisdom of America’s fathers – and God the Father – that they may “gain insight” for the issues of today.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R. – Source of Exceptionalism

 

In his 1989 farewell address, Ronald Reagan famously described his vision of America as a shining city upon a hill. “In my mind, it was a tall proud city built on rocks stronger than oceans, wind-swept, God-blessed and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace.”

Send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill.

Psalm 43:3

President Reagan’s words were adapted from “A Model of Christian Charity,” a 1630 sermon by John Winthrop, who first delivered it to immigrants arriving in America. It articulates the idea of “American Exceptionalism.” Its central premise was that the nation would survive only if its citizens were just, merciful, labored and suffered together, and worshiped the God of Israel. But, Winthrop warned, “if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause Him to withdraw His present help from us, we shall be made a story and a by-word through the world.”

Today, pray that America may be that shining city – illuminated by His light and truth – and also that others may be drawn to Him by your testimony of His exceptional love.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R. – Blessings of Liberty

 

After fleeing communist Poland to make a new beginning in America, an immigrant named Janina Atkins wrote to the New York Times: “I came to this country with $2.60 in my purse, some clothes, a few books, a bundled of old letters,” she wrote. “There is something in the air of American that filled my soul with a feeling of independence, and independence begot strength.”

Thus says the Lord of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another, do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor.

Zechariah 7:9-10

She continued, “I love America because I do not have to stand in line for hours to buy a piece of tough, fat meat…or pay a day’s earnings for a small chicken. There is no one here to lead you by the hand, but also no one to order you about…what luck and joy it is to live in a free country.”

Today, take a break from all the bad news and critics to thank God for the wonderful place He has allowed you to live. America has problems, yes, but it is also a country which has worked to fulfill the Lord’s command in today’s scripture, perhaps more than any other nation in history.

Presidential Prayer Team; P.G. – Are You a Culture Warrior?

 

“Over the last two decades there has been waged an all-out assault on common sense and on the common values of the American people. We now stand at a crossroads.” So said William Bennett, former U.S. Secretary of Education. Few would disagree. In fact, it seems that in addition to common sense and common values, the very Christian heritage of the nation is under fire in what has been called a culture war.

Restore us to yourself, O Lord, that we may be restored!

Lamentations 5:21

While you call upon God to restore America – and you should – evaluate your own self and what are you doing to build His kingdom. Hearts are only changed from the inside. Are you a living, breathing Gospel that draws others to the Savior? Does the joy of the Lord radiate from your life? Or are you only showing anger, disgust, maybe even defeat?

Pray earnestly for national restoration of faith in Almighty God. William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, said, “If we aren’t governed by God, we will be ruled by tyrants.” Remember, therefore, to intercede for the leaders of America’s government to submit their wills to the will of the Lord. Then be joyful. Jesus said He has overcome the world!

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W. – Freedom Fighters

Abraham Lincoln once said, “Freedom is not the right to do what we want, but what we ought. Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it.” America has always represented freedom. The first settlers came here for freedom to worship in the way they thought was right. The Pilgrims believed in a simpler form of worship than the Church of England. As the first leaders in America, they dared to brave hardship to worship according to their understanding of what God wanted them to do.

Do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

Galatians 5:13

In today’s verse, Paul reminded the Galatians true freedom doesn’t come from legalism and ceremonies, but from faith. Freedom is given by God to serve others. America’s founders understood this and acted on faith to do their duty.

How are you using your freedom in Christ to serve others? As you pray today, give thanks God led a group of Pilgrims to make tremendous sacrifices to serve future generations. Also ask for the country’s current leaders to commit to do the same for generations to come.

Presidential Prayer Team; H.L.M. – Shining Light

The late President Ronald Reagan once said, “The source of our strength in the quest for human freedom is not material, but spiritual.” It was evident that Reagan was a political leader whose Christian faith helped shaped his presidency – and changed the world. He also is remembered for a presidency that restored optimism to America. During his funeral service, former U.S. Senator John Danforth referred to verses from the book of Matthew in his message.

The glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.

Revelation 21:23

“You are the light of the world, a city set on a hill cannot be hid,” said Danforth, quoting the first verse in the passage. “It was [Reagan’s] favorite theme from his first inaugural address to his final address from the oval office. For him, America was the shining city on a hill.”

Give thanks for those leaders in America who love the Lord and who publicly proclaim their faith. Ask God to give them courage to shine His light everywhere they go and in all the decisions they make. Then consider how you can be more available to God to declare the light of His love to your neighbors and coworkers to His glory!

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W.- The Crown That’s Coming

Watch the news and you’ll see stories of Christians persecuted in other countries. But are believers in Jesus persecuted in America? According to the recent study “Undeniable: The Survey of Hostility to Religion in America” produced by the Family Research Council and the Liberty Institute, they definitely are. People are receiving fines or going to jail for holding home Bible studies; students are being banned from praying before sporting events; and Christian ministries are experiencing more-than-normal scrutiny from the IRS. Many believers are fearful it will only get worse.

Don’t fear what you are about to suffer…Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Revelation 2:10

Today’s scripture was written to the church in Smyrna. Christians there suffered hunger, poverty, imprisonment and sometimes death for their faith. However, Jesus knew this and encouraged them to not be afraid, but look to the “crown of life” they would one day receive.

The same applies to you today. Even in the midst of suffering, testing or persecution, don’t fear. Stay faithful to receive the crown that’s coming. Also pray for the nation and its leaders to recognize the pattern of persecution forming in America and protect religious freedom.

Presidential Prayer Team;  A.W.- In God We Trust

“In God We Trust” became America’s official motto when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into law in 1956, but the phrase had been inscribed on American coins for almost 90 years prior. Francis Scott Key also used the phrase “In God is our trust” in the Star-Spangled Banner penned in 1814. Trust in God has been a founding principle of America since its beginning. In its third century as a country, however, many seek to remove God’s name from coins, national monuments and buildings, and even the Pledge of Allegiance.

A greedy man stirs up strife, but the one who trusts in the Lord will be enriched.

Proverbs 28:25

People and countries with a greedy spirit often cannot bear opposition. They long for wealth and power and are willing to be vengeful to others to fulfill their desires. This stands in stark contrast to those who trust in God for their provision. They flourish, prosper and enjoy peace by living in dependence upon the Lord and His grace. A further reminder of the strength and wisdom of trusting in God is found in today’s verse.

 

Spend time today thanking God for his provision, peace and protection for America. Then pray for its citizens and leaders to remember where those things come from – and return to trust in God as their guiding principle.

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W. – American “Nones”

A survey conducted by the Institute for the Study of Secularism in Society and Culture at Trinity College revealed the number of Americans calling themselves Christians was down from 86 percent in 1990 to 75 percent in 2009. At the same time, American “Nones” – or people who identify with no religious group – increased from 8.1 percent of the population in 1990 to 15 percent in 2098, an increase of about 20 million people.

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.

Proverbs 14:34

Many believe America became one of the most powerful, influential nations in the world because of its founding on Christian beliefs. So what does it mean for America if its people are leaving Christianity and turning away from God? Today’s scripture gives insight. Reproach in this verse means public shame or disgrace. When a person or nation becomes unrighteous and begins to ignore where security and salvation come from, disgrace and punishment often follow. Just as Israel and Judah found themselves among the list of nations surrounding them that rejected the Lord and fell from greatness, America may be on the same path.

As you spend time with God today, ask Him to draw America back to Him. Pray righteousness and morality would once again be important to the nation’s citizens and leaders.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.K. – A Ready Heart

For decades, TV programs have shown “man on the street” segments – interviews with regular people on the city sidewalks of America. At times they provoke laughter. But more recently, the responses invoke a sense of discouragement and disappointment, especially when the questions relate to the federal government and its duties. Most U.S. citizens on the street know little and understand even less.

My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments.

Proverbs 3:1

So it is with some Christians. Professing to be religious, their perception of God’s Word and His desires for them falls far short. Proverbs 3 offers persuading arguments for following the will of God…all of them to make you both blessed and a blessing. The first verse underscores the need for you to acquaint yourself with His Word – memorizing portions of it so it will come to mind when needed. More importantly, prepare your heart to follow the Lord’s commandments. The result will be an intimate, personal, loving relationship with Him…one that produces devotion to His will.

Pray now that your heart will be ready to know God’s Word and His love for you. Then intercede for the leaders of this country – that they may understand God’s will for this nation and choose the best for America.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.P. – God’s Superstars

America’s wowed by its sports stars. Names like Babe Ruth, Joe Namath and Michael Phelps are practically spoken with reverence. God’s perspective is a little different. “He’s not impressed with horsepower; the size of our muscles means little to him. Those who fear God get God’s attention; they can depend on his strength.” (Psalm 147:10-11, The Message)

The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.

Psalm 147:11

In His eyes, superstars are those who are well acquainted with their own weaknesses, hope in the Lord and rely on His strength. Hebrews 11 describes the faith “hall of fame.” In the list of people like Rahab, Samson and David, you recognize them as individuals with human flaws, yet they did great things when they relied on the Lord.

You’re probably faced daily with your own shortcomings…and the difficulties of the nation seemed to be magnified as time goes by. Know that, like America takes joy in its sports heroes, the Lord delights in you as you turn to Him in faith and prayer…for yourself and for your country. Rejoice that the God of Heaven and Earth actually enjoys hearing from you – and sees you as His star!

Presidential Prayer Team; C.H. – World Power

In August 2013, many Egyptians were killed in a clash between the Muslim Brotherhood and security forces of the government. Everyone watched to see what side America would take. Other nations recognize the weight of a world power backing it. But President Obama was firm in saying, “We don’t take sides.”

We can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”

Hebrews 13:6

People assume if America is on their side, they can’t lose. While that’s not necessarily true with this nation, it is true with the Lord. He can win any battle. With God, Daniel was saved from the mouth of the lion. With God, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were not singed in the fiery furnace. With God, Moses was able to lead the Israelites away from Pharaoh and through the Red Sea on dry ground. “With God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)

Whatever you are facing today, whoever your enemies may be – do not fear. When the Lord is your helper, He will provide you with the strength to do what needs to be done. Ask God to cast away fear and help you stand strong. Then ask Him to reveal Himself to President Obama and his cabinet so they know God is the only true world power.

Do you remember the first time you saw the multiplication table? You flipped a page in the math book and there it was – an intimidating grid of scary numbers. At first glance, committing that table to memory seemed like an impossible task. But with a closer look and some explanation, your perception changed. You also discovered that, in contrast to simple addition, multiplication of two numbers tremendously magnifies the result. The table was not really a frightening beast, but actually a powerful tool.

Walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied.

Acts 9:31

The Bible promises multiplied peace and joy for those that fear God. Fearing God in this context does not mean hiding under the bed afraid. It means being filled with respect, awe, wonder and reverence for His holiness. When you approach God from this perspective, His presence and power are magnified in your life.

Before you pray for America, your neighborhood or your family today, stop and confess your fear of God. Acknowledge His attributes of loving kindness, generosity and peace. As you walk in this kind of fear, even the most menacing monster will be met with multiplied assurance.
