John MacArthur – Conquering in Conflict

John MacArthur

“By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they had been encircled for seven days” (Heb. 11:30).

Faith is the key to spiritual conquest.

Forty years had lapsed since the Israelites refused to enter the Promised Land. That unbelieving generation had perished in the wilderness. Now Joshua was leading a new generation into the land. The first obstacle they faced was Jericho—a well- fortified city that was near the mouth of the Jordan River.

Some city walls of that day were wide enough at the top to allow two chariots to ride side-by-side. That was probably true of Jericho because of its strategic location. That, coupled with the caliber of its army, made the city virtually impregnable— especially to unsophisticated Israelites, who lacked military training.

But what is impossible for man is easy for God. And the stage was set for Him to demonstrate His power and for the Israelites to demonstrate their faith and humility.

One can only imagine how embarrassed the Hebrew people felt as they marched around Jericho once a day for six days. That certainly is not your typical military strategy. But on the seventh day, after marching around the city seven times with the priests blowing their rams’ horns, the priests gave one final blast, the people all shouted out loud, and the walls of the city collapsed (Josh. 6:20). Faith had reduced a formidable obstacle to a crumbled ruin.

Can you identify some spiritual obstacles you’ve faced recently? How did you handle them? You’ll always have them to deal with in your Christian walk, but don’t fret. See them as opportunities to exercise faith and see God’s power on display in your life. Continue to trust the Lord and demonstrate your faith by courageously doing what He has called you to do.

Suggestions for Prayer; Ask God to help you humbly trust in God’s power when you face spiritual conflicts.

For Further Study; Read about the conquest of Jericho in Joshua 6:1-21. Note each occasion where the people obeyed one of Joshua’s commands without hesitation.

Presidential Prayer Team; G.C. – The Stump

ppt_seal01

A withered tree stump; no lovely arching branches or majestic trunk, just old and ugly – could it possibly be good for anything but the fire? Isaiah 10 talks about how God chops down the arrogant like one felling tall trees. The actual people being addressed are the decedents of Israel. They had forgotten God and become disobedient. Great foreign armies came and enslaved them. It was a dark time.

There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.

Isaiah 11:1

Then Isaiah 11 tells of a shoot coming up from a old stump…and there is not just a hint of life in the new sprout, there is an abundance of it. It will become the source of life for all! Isaiah is using the analogy of the tree stump to foretell that God will still bring the Messiah through Israel’s descendants. When Jesus sacrificed Himself on the cross, He not only paid the price for all people’s disobedience towards God, He released believers from the heritage of sin.

Give thanks today for the amazing gift of your Savior’s sacrifice. Pray that many across America will believe and convey a heritage of abundant life to every dry and dark place in the land.

ppt_seal01

Abraham Lincoln once said, “Freedom is not the right to do what we want, but what we ought. Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it.” America has always represented freedom. The first settlers came here for freedom to worship in the way they thought was right. The Pilgrims believed in a simpler form of worship than the Church of England. As the first leaders in America, they dared to brave hardship to worship according to their understanding of what God wanted them to do.

Do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

Galatians 5:13

In today’s verse, Paul reminded the Galatians true freedom doesn’t come from legalism and ceremonies, but from faith. Freedom is given by God to serve others. America’s founders understood this and acted on faith to do their duty.

How are you using your freedom in Christ to serve others? As you pray today, give thanks God led a group of Pilgrims to make tremendous sacrifices to serve future generations. Also ask for the country’s current leaders to commit to do the same for generations to come.

Presidential Prayer Team; A.C. – Look Ahead

lonytnsthnkgv

No one knows when Jesus Christ will return to Earth. That seems clear enough, but disregarding those words led to one of the most highly anticipated – and most disappointing – days in American history.

Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he.

Zechariah 9:9

In the early 1800s, churches in the northeastern United States experienced one revival after another. These new believers had little theological education, but possessed great fervor. From their ranks rose William Miller of New York, who did a study of the prophesies in Daniel and concluded Christ would return on October 22, 1844. Enthusiasm for Jesus’ second coming was so great, prophetic charts were added alongside stock market listings in newspapers. When the big day came and passed without event, many Christians grew disillusioned. Unbelievers became cynical. The failed prediction became known as “The Great Disappointment.”

Today’s verse accurately foresaw the first coming of Jesus Christ. Your salvation is the anything-but-disappointing benefit of that initial arrival. As you remember God’s blessings on this Thanksgiving Day, look ahead to His second coming – whenever it is – and what it means to you and to America. Ask the Lord to move in your life with specific direction on how you can declare His love to your friends and neighbors this holiday season and beyond.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R. – Spider Salvation

ppt_seal01

A young Marine whose name is lost to history was separated from his unit in the jungles of Saipan during a fierce battle of World War II. He crawled into a cave as the enemy approached and awaited the inevitable. The Japanese were meticulously flushing out and executing stragglers, and there was no chance they would overlook the Marine’s hideout. “Lord,” he prayed, “if it be your will, please protect me. But whatever your will, I love and trust you. Amen.”

The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

James 5:16

As he sat in terror while the enemy drew closer, he caught sight of a lone spider as it spun a strand of silk across the cave entrance. “Lord, what I need is a brick wall,” the Marine thought, “and you send me a spider web!” But when the Japanese approached a few minutes later, they looked at the cave entrance and continued on their way…reasoning that no one could be inside because the intricate and fragile spider web was undisturbed.

As you pray for America and her leaders today, remember that God’s ways are higher – and often quite different – than yours. It is not for you to question His means or His timing. Just do His will, pray ceaselessly, and trust that He will respond faithfully.

Presidential Prayer Team; A.C. – A Year From Now

ppt_seal01

Faith honors God, and God honors faith – as is evidenced in a story from missionaries Robert and Mary Moffat. For a decade they labored in present-day Botswana, Africa without a single convert to Christianity. Ultimately, the directors of the mission board questioned the wisdom of continuing their work. At the same time, a friend contacted the Moffats, desiring to send them a gift to encourage them. “Send up a communion set,” Mrs. Moffat replied. “I’m sure it will soon be needed.”

We ought always to give thanks to God for you…because your faith is growing abundantly.

II Thessalonians 1:3

Within days, God honored Moffat’s request of faith. A small group of six villagers accepted Jesus Christ as Savior, and the communion set was used to give those new believers their first Lord’s Supper.

Has someone come to God through your witness in 2014? If the answer is “Yes,” give thanks to the Lord. If your response is “No,” don’t be condemned or feel regret. Instead, commit that you will expand your personal witness, starting during this holiday season. In America, you have incredible freedom to share your faith. Just think how exciting it would be, a year from now, to be able to speak the prayer of today’s verse about someone you led to Christ?

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R. – Who’s On Your List?

ppt_seal01

America’s founders established a system of government with “checks and balances” so that no individual or branch of government would have too much power. But it has always been an imperfect system. The late Charles Colson, who would become known for his ministry work with prisoners, was once President Richard Nixon’s feared “hatchet man.” Many who criticized Nixon appeared on an “enemies list” which Colson compiled with the idea of having the Internal Revenue Service and other government agencies harass those individuals.

That we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.

I Timothy 2:2

Notwithstanding the “dirty tricks” used by Nixon and other presidents, it is every citizen’s right to object, criticize and even protest. But even while doing so, you should pray for those in high positions, whether you agree with them or not. Scripture demands it while also alluding to the practical benefit that often follows – a peaceful and quiet life.

Today, pray with gratitude for your leaders, and remember that your influence will grow as you expand your list of friends, not enemies. Then seek to be a person who is loving and helpful to your neighbors or coworkers, godly and dignified in all you do.

ppt_seal01

Most parents-to-be anticipate the arrival of their baby with a deep desire to love, nurture and raise their precious child. Where did this longing come from? “Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us?” (Malachi 2:10) God created people in His image. Along with that came the need to have children.

I said, “How I would set you among my sons, and give you a pleasant land, a heritage most beautiful of all nations.”

Jeremiah 3:19

From the time God created Adam and Eve, to the time He set Israel apart as His people, to the time of Christ, and to the church – God’s goal has always been to be a loving Father to His creation. He has gone to great lengths to accomplish this. “You have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’” (Romans 8:15) “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God.” (I John 3:1)

Thank the Lord for the rich heritage America has enjoyed—of following after God, helping nations less fortunate, and being blessed as a result. Pray for this nation, its citizens and leaders to turn wholeheartedly to the Heavenly Father once again.

Campus Crusade for Christ; Bill Bright – Mighty Weapons

dr_bright

“I use God’s mighty weapons, not those made by men, to knock down the devil’s strongholds. These weapons can break down every proud argument against God and every wall that can be built to keep men from finding Him. With these weapons I can capture rebels and bring them back to God, and change them into men whose hearts’ desire is obedience to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:4,5).

Joe came to share with me how his leader in a particular Christian organization had been most unfair to him. He was being relieved of his responsibilities and replaced by another who, in his opinion, was not nearly as well qualified. As we talked it became apparent that Satan easily could sabotage the ministry.

After listening to Joe’s grievances for some time, seeking to know the truth of the matter, I inquired as to his walk with God. “Is there any sin in your life? Do you know for sure that you’re filled with the Holy Spirit?” Then I brought the other party into private conference and inquired as to his relationship with God. “Is there any sin in your life? Do you know for sure that you’re filled with the Holy Spirit?” Both assured me that they were filled with the Spirit and that they genuinely desired to know and do the will of God. I was convinced that they were both sincere.

How then could two men without sin in their lives and who claimed to be filled with the Holy Spirit be at such odds? I sought further truth. In the meantime, we brought to bear the weapons of prayer and the Word of God. God says that when brothers are at odds we should claim in prayer the release of His supernatural wisdom to resolve the matter, and, finally, claim by faith that Satan will be routed, that all of his influence will be overcome.

The counseling required several hours. I talked to one individual, then the other, then both of them together. Finally, we were on our knees praising God and then embracing each other, and the men genuinely felt that their relationship with each other and with the Lord had been fully restored. Satan had lost another battle. Another miracle had happened. Another tragedy had been averted and the Body of Christ had been spared another scandal.

What are those weapons? A holy life, the Holy Spirit, prayer, the Word of God, faith, truth – these are the weapons of God for supernatural warfare. Learn how to use them for His glory.

Bible Reading: Ephesians 6:10-17

TODAY’S ACTION POINT: Whenever Satan attacks me, or I observe conflicts in the Body of Christ due to his influence, I will seek to defeat him by using God’s mighty weapons and will teach other Christians how to apply them in times of spiritual battle

The late President Ronald Reagan once said, “The source of our strength in the quest for human freedom is not material, but spiritual.” It was evident that Reagan was a political leader whose Christian faith helped shaped his presidency – and changed the world. He also is remembered for a presidency that restored optimism to America. During his funeral service, former U.S. Senator John Danforth referred to verses from the book of Matthew in his message.

The glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.

Revelation 21:23

“You are the light of the world, a city set on a hill cannot be hid,” said Danforth, quoting the first verse in the passage. “It was [Reagan’s] favorite theme from his first inaugural address to his final address from the oval office. For him, America was the shining city on a hill.”

Give thanks for those leaders in America who love the Lord and who publicly proclaim their faith. Ask God to give them courage to shine His light everywhere they go and in all the decisions they make. Then consider how you can be more available to God to declare the light of His love to your neighbors and coworkers to His glory!

There’s a plot to eradicate the Jewish race from Earth. Sound familiar? It’s been going on continually since the beginning of their history.

That these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, in every clan, province, and city.

Esther 9:28

One particular scheme, taking place in 474 BC, was gloriously foiled by a young woman named Esther. She was separated from her parents and raised in a foreign kingdom. Her identity as a Jewess was hidden and, as far as anyone knew, she was just another maiden in waiting for the King. Yet at the critical moment, when God had every player on their mark, Esther’s true identity was revealed. Like an arrow expertly placed, Esther’s work pierced through the heart of the enemy’s evil plan. Jewish people still celebrate the days when God used Esther to save them. Esther’s very appropriate name is taken from the Hebrew root “hester,” meaning “hidden.”

Today you may feel like just another Christ-follower facing a hostile culture, but remember Esther! God has a plan for America and, while you may not see how all the pieces fit together, be assured at the right moment your faithful prayers will hit their target. He has chosen you, and will be glorified through you as your obediently intercede.

Gilbert Breedlove regards his work as an act of worship to God. In fact, this North Carolina county judge recently resigned because he did not want to violate his Christian faith and perform same-sex marriages, now permitted under the state’s law. However, Breedlove is not worried about his financial future because his faith is in the Lord.

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.

Colossians 3:23

“I was Christian when I started,” Breedlove said. “Then, the law didn’t require me to perform something that was against my religious belief. Now that law has changed its requirements.”

Hebrews 6:10 says, “For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints.” The desire of every follower of Jesus Christ is to one day hear Him say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Strive to please God in all you do, and remember to thank the Lord each day for America’s leaders who faithfully serve Him. Intercede for God’s protection and provision whenever they choose to follow their Christian faith instead of taking the politically popular path.

“I wonder how it felt to wake up in the belly of a whale,” go the lyrics of an old Bill and Gloria Gaither song about Jonah, a popular children’s Bible story and relatable character.

What I have vowed I will pay. Salvation belongs to the Lord!

Jonah 2:9

Jonah walked with the Lord, but when the Creator asked Jonah to go to Nineveh, the prophet declined. He knew the Ninevites would repent and ask God for mercy, but Jonah didn’t think they deserved it. From the belly of a great fish who swallowed him, the pouting prophet changed his mind and agreed to bring the Lord’s message wherever God sent him.

Ever have the same attitude about the lost in America thinking they don’t deserve grace? But grace is just that – a gift you don’t deserve. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” (Ephesians 2:8) Thank God for the lessons in Jonah’s story, and ask Him to open your heart to those who aren’t aware of Christ’s love. Pray especially for any of your nation’s leaders who don’t know Him.

Joyce Meyer – Seven Reasons We Don’t Take Care of Ourselves

Joyce meyer

I meet a lot of people in the course of my ministry. Sadly, I see too many who are not taking care of themselves. Many of them clearly feel terrible. Anyone can see this in the way they look and the way they carry themselves. You simply cannot look really great if you don’t feel great. How you feel will show up somewhere; in your body language, the dull look in your eyes, or even the color of your skin.

It is in our nature to take care of ourselves, so why don’t we? I thought about the ways that this can go wrong, and I came up with these reasons:

  1. We don’t know how to take care of our physical bodies. Decades of bad diets, misinformation, and easy access to fast food and prepackaged food have left people amazingly confused about what a wholesome diet is and how they should eat.
  2. We have a skewed body image planted in our minds by media and advertising. On one side we are inundated with unattainable ideals of beauty, while on the other, obesity is so prevalent that it’s almost considered the norm. We need to reset our internal picture of what a healthy person should look like.
  3. We have lost touch with exercise. For virtually all of human existence, exercise was an integral part of our daily existence. Now we’ve invented enough conveniences that we often live completely divorced from exercise. However, it turns out a good deal of our well-being is dependent on exercise.
  4. We have let ourselves slip into unworkable lives. With the incredible pressures of juggling career and parenthood, paying steep mortgages and increased fuel prices and burning the proverbial candle at both ends and everywhere in between, it is oh-so-easy to put the workout off, grab a cheeseburger on the run, cheat our sleep time in order to catch up on paperwork and let the tail wag the dog until we’ve cut everything out of our lives that once gave us pleasure or kept us sane. This is bad enough, because life is a gift and is meant to be joyful. It should be pleasurable and sane.
  5. We have become pathologically selfless. Selflessness can be addictive. It feels so good to do for others and it makes us feel important. Yes, it is a good thing to help others and should be a major part of our life, but in my line of work, I often see people who routinely ignore their basic needs. The only thing that gives them meaning is doing things for others. This is admirable, but it can easily cross the line into mistaking suffering for virtue. Martyrs usually end up bitter. And once the body breaks down and life is no longer joyful, it becomes increasingly hard to serve anyone. Volunteers in a soup kitchen don’t let their pots fall apart while they ladle out one more bowl of soup. They take the time to care for the equipment they need to do their calling. And you should do the same with your most important piece of equipment—your body.

I am not suggesting that we be selfish because that renders us very unhappy and is not how God teaches us to live. We are to live sacrificially and be involved in doing good works, but we must not ignore our own basic needs in the process. Everything in life must be balanced or something breaks down and quite often it is us.

  1. We have lost our support. When we don’t have a good social network or a godly foundation to keep our spirits high, it becomes easy to slip into boredom, loneliness, and depression. If we aren’t able to somehow fill that void, the devil will. You may have heard the saying “Nature abhors a vacuum.” Well, let me tell you, the devil loves one! He’ll put lots of bad food within easy reach and let you mistake spiritual or emotional hunger for physical hunger. Maintaining a good support network is a terrific way to prevent the formation of bad habits.

We need to have right people around us who will speak if they see us getting out of balance. We need to spend regular time in fellowship with God and learning His principals. His Holy Spirit who works through His Word convicts us of wrongdoing and gives us the chance to make positive changes before we break down or become ill.

  1. We have forgotten our own value. This is the biggest reason we don’t take care of ourselves. If you don’t understand your own importance in the Big Plan, taking care of yourself seems pointless. Reminding you of your place in God’s plan is my first and most important task.

If you’re not sure of your value in God’s eyes, then I invite you to read this article. There’s a crucial link between our spirits and our bodies that we all need to understand.

God has a great future planned for you and you need to be ready for it! You need to look great and feel great, ready to do whatever God asks of you.

One day C.H. Spurgeon was walking through the countryside with a friend. As they strolled along, the evangelist noticed a barn with a weather vane on its roof. At the top of the vane were the words: “God is Love.” Spurgeon remarked to his companion that he thought this was a rather inappropriate place for such a message. “Weather vanes are changeable,” he said, “but God’s love is constant.”

For he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.

Ezra 3:11

“I don’t agree with you about those words, Charles,” replied his friend. “You misunderstood the meaning. The sign is indicating a truth. Regardless of which way the wind blows, God is love.”

Hopefully you know that to be true for you. As life’s ups and downs have assailed you and your family, surely you’ve learned the steadfastness of the Lord – that His love and presence has endured for you and grown in your heart. Now think about America. It’s been through wars, attacks from without and violence from within. Politicians and their agendas have come and gone. What has remained constant? God’s goodness and His care and purposes for the nation. Thank Him for His faithfulness for the country and toward you. Give Him your unending trust and praise!

Slumped over the table in the dark corner of a tavern, an old gent slumbered, having drifted away after one-too-many drinks. Some younger patrons nearby decided to play a trick on him. They procured a block of foul-smelling limburger cheese and rubbed it thoroughly into his moustache and beard. When the old man awoke, he took a sniff of the air, cringed, then stumbled over to another corner of the tavern and dozed off again.

God had made them rejoice with great joy…and the joy of Jerusalem was heard far away.

Nehemiah 12:43

Minutes later, he arose, sniffed again, and walked over to another corner. Finally, he went outside, took another whiff, and sat down on the curb in despair. “The whole world stinks!” he cried out.

This is what life is like when your attitude is to see the bad in everything. But that’s no way to draw others to the Savior. Today’s verse declares the power of joy to glorify God! “This is the day that the Lord has made,” says Psalm 118:24. “Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” As you pray for your leaders today, take the time to rejoice in America’s legacy. God does not always pick the most likely person for a particular job. Abraham was old. Moses was shy. Samson lacked self-control. Jonah ran away. David was an adulterer and murderer. Mary was a virgin chosen to be a mother. Peter was impatient. Paul persecuted Christians. The list goes on.

A minister according to the gift of God’s grace, which was given me by the working of his power.

Ephesians 3:7

Paul said because of God’s grace and power, when he was weak, he was strong (II Corinthians 12:10). In today’s verse, Paul noted how he relied on God’s grace and power to minister the gospel. It’s amazing but true: God chooses the foolish, the weak, the low and despised to shame the powerful, so no human can boast in God’s presence (I Corinthians 1:27-29). Jesus said, “Apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)

Abide in Christ through prayer, reading the Bible and doing what it says. Recognize your weaknesses and work to eradicate them, but don’t let them hold you back from service for Him to others. Then pray for your newly-elected politicians to seek God and rely on His power and grace.

Tabasco is famous for their hot sauce. This iconic condiment label is known as a “heritage brand.” Started by Edmund McIlhenny in 1868, the company now has fifth generation family working in its midst. Its business ideal to stick to its roots generated success.

It was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the king’s food.

Daniel 1:15

The prophet Daniel was a “heritage” man as well. When Daniel was taken into exile and placed in the king’s courts, he politely refused the royal food. He didn’t want to risk eating something considered ceremonially unclean by Jewish standards. As today’s verse shows, in keeping with his faith and Jewish heritage, Daniel was healthier than any of the other men in the court. Daniel’s faith was so strong others could actually see a difference in him.

Can others see your belief in God? In a society where success and money are hailed as king, it’s easy to move away from a Christian heritage. And Hannah prayed and said, “My heart exults in the Lord; my horn is exalted in the Lord.”

I Samuel 2:1

Had these services been available during her time, Hannah might have visited a doctor for help to conceive, too. She’d wanted a baby for so long. Scripture says year after year when she and her husband Elkhanah went to Shiloh to offer sacrifices, she would pray for God to open her womb. In desperation, she made a vow that if God gave her a son, she would give him back to God in service. When Hannah had Samuel, she thanked God for granting her request. She prayed for God to use him in His kingdom and delivered him to Eli to serve in the temple. Samuel became a great prophet and leader, eventually advising King Saul and King David.

People streamed to the altar every night, eager to get right with God. They even renamed the large outdoor amphitheater in which they met “Prayer Mountain.”

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

John 3:17

Then something just as amazing happened. Houston passed the spiritual baton to Dallas who began 40 days of fasting and prayer. Kansas City, Missouri, Pasadena, California and Katy, Texas followed.

“For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer.” (I Peter 3:12) Give thanks for the leaders across this nation who love Him and whose words and actions are helping to lead many to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
