Presidential Prayer Team; J.R.- A Matter of Time

You may not be entirely happy with the slate of presidential candidates making the rounds in the United States this year, but any of them would be better than the thug leading the people of Zimbabwe. Robert Mugabe has been the Prime Minister there since 1980, stubbornly holding on to power now at the age of 92 after several fixed elections. He has been responsible for many grotesque human rights violations and an unbelievable assortment of outrages. Of great intrigue in Zimbabwe – as much of the nation eagerly awaits Mugabe’s passing – is the state of his health. The Prime Minister has taken several mysterious flights to Asian countries for medical treatment of unknown ailments.

Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life.

Psalm 49:7

Presidential Prayer Team; C.P.- Desperation

Droughts in the western states can become so severe that animals abandon their babies because they are unable to care for them. One doe in Texas, though, was particularly resourceful; she led her fawn to a kiddie pool in a nearby yard. Thirst is a powerful force.

As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.

Psalm 42:1

The Psalmist uses it in today’s verse to describe not only his desire and motivation, but deep need for the Lord. The Bible promises that those who seek God will find Him. Are you as determined to find God as someone dying of thirst is to find water? Sometimes it takes a great need to stir up that level of motivation. But you don’t have to wait until you are in a desperate situation to seek God desperately.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.H. – Out of the Pit

On October 14, 1987, Jessica McClure became America’s baby when, at 18 months old, she fell into a well behind her aunt’s Midland, Texas home. When her rescue made national news, President Ronald Reagan said all of America became Jessica’s godmothers and godfathers. Due to the nature of the small pipe in which Jessica was stuck and the rock surrounding it, rescue was complicated…but after 58 hours, the little girl was set free.

He drew me up…and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.

Psalm 40:2

Presidential Prayer Team; G.C. – Invisible

First year spy school includes a course in “How to Hide in Plain Sight.” Could you pass the class? Being unnoticed hinges on common sense ingredients like adjusting your clothing to match those around you, walking slowly in close proximity to a larger group, and avoiding eye contact in a crowd. Thankfully, your life will probably never depend on not being noticed…but it never hurts to be prepared.

In the cover of your presence you hide them…you store them in your shelter.

Psalm 31:20

In today’s verse, David expresses his great confidence in God’s protection. David endured the unrelenting jealously and persecution of a powerful enemy. King Saul used every resource available to seek out and attempt to destroy David. In the midst of such fearful circumstances, David leaned deeply upon the Lord and trusted in His providence for security. David knew Saul couldn’t do anything that God did not allow.

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W. – A Winning Cry

Visit any playground and you might find a group of kids playing “Mercy.” This popular children’s game of strength and endurance also goes by other names such as “Peanuts” and “Uncle.” In the game, each player attempts to bend back the fingers of the other player until they can no longer stand the pain or reverse the situation, at which time the “losing” player cries out for mercy. Then the “winning” person releases the fingers to stop the pain.

Blessed be the Lord! For he has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy.

Psalm 28:6

In the scriptures leading to today’s verse, David expresses his suffering. He anxiously prays to God asking for mercy…and the Lord immediately answers his prayer. The pain stops and he experiences peace that leads him to bless the Lord.

Presidential Prayer Team; G.C.- Set Free

What’s the scariest movie you’ve ever seen? Many Boomers will say The Exorcist, a despicable tale of a young girl possessed by a demon and the ensuing battle between the evil spirit and a priest. While the story is fiction, in reality there are dark forces active on Earth, and though a demon cannot possess a child of God, Satan’s minions delight in wreaking havoc through circumstances.

In you our father’s trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them.

Psalm 22:4

In the Bible, Jesus encounters a man under demonic control. People described him as running wild in the hills, screaming madly, cutting himself, and breaking any chain they used to bind him. Jesus commanded the evil spirit to leave the man – and soon he was seen clothed and in his right mind. Jesus told the man to go and tell everyone what God had done for him.

Presidential Prayer Team; H.L.M. – An Eternal Ride

During a recent visit to New York City, 2016 presidential candidate Rick Santorum and two associates were riding in a cab on Manhattan’s west side. Kenneth, the cab driver, looked at Santorum in the rear-view mirror and said, “I know you. You’re Rick Santorum.” Richard, one of the two men with Santorum, was a pastor. He asked Kenneth, “What do you think of Jesus?” Kenneth responded, “Oh, that’s not for me.”

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.

Psalm 16:5

Presidential Prayer Team; C.H.- Open Schedule

Did you know the White House receives around 100 written requests to see the president each day? Everyone wants to see the Commander-in-Chief, whether it’s to lobby a cause or snap a photo. Richard Berke of The New York Times once said “it may be easier to get an audience with the Pope, or even Madonna, than to get squeezed onto the calendar of the President of the United States.”

Many seek the face of a ruler, but it is from the Lord that a man gets justice.

Proverbs 29:26

Most want the president to solve a problem, but today’s passage says it’s the Lord, not a ruler, who grants justice. God is available any day, any time. You only have to call His name. He may be the Creator of the universe, but His schedule is always open for you. You can come to Him in boldness and confidence and receive both strength and wisdom for your soul.

Presidential Prayer Team; H.L.M. – The Father’s Voice

Christian comedian Michael Jr. is used to commanding an audience’s attention. Yet he didn’t expect the reception he got from his newborn daughter. Shortly after her birth, the baby was wailing loudly. Suddenly, she stopped crying when she heard Michael’s voice. Then when she became upset later, he told her, “I love you.” In response, she not only stopped crying, but opened her beautiful eyes. “We’ll always have times when we’re not as comfortable…where life is just heavy,” Michael said. “The key thing to do in those moments is to be still and listen for the Father’s voice. Because He is trying to talk to you. And I can tell you what He wants you to know is that He loves you. All you got to do is open your eyes.”

Blessed is the one who fears the Lord always.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.P.- Temporary Life

“Nothing is certain,” it is said, “but death and taxes.” This amusing statement is pretty much true. How easy it is to make plans, counting on every day to be predictable, and then an event comes along and rattles life as you know it.

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

Proverbs 27:1

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R. – Legacy of Lethargy

Who was America’s laziest president? That’s a judgment call and highly subjective. But among the finalists, you would have to include Calvin Coolidge. His 1924 campaign slogan was “Keep Cool with Coolidge.” He was known as “Silent Cal.”

As a door turns on its hinges, so does a sluggard on his bed.

Proverbs 26:14

If these monikers don’t hint at his lack of activity, perhaps these facts will: Coolidge typically worked four hours a day at the White House, and then went to play golf. He required 11 hours of sleep each night, plus daily naps. The writer H.L. Mencken characterized Coolidge’s work ethic by saying that an ideal day for him “would be one in which nothing happens.” And Gertrude Stein was said to have remarked, upon hearing of the president’s passing, “Coolidge dead? How can you tell?”

Presidential Prayer Team; C.P. – Love Beyond Fear

With as many as 100,000 Syrian refugees about to settle in the U.S., many citizens are frightened, worried or angry. What if terrorists are among them? What if the Islam religion takes over? What about the poor, the homeless, and the veterans of America? Some wonder if anything positive can come out of this situation.

If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat.

Proverbs 25:21

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R. – Perilous Paybacks

If you happen to kill someone – either by malice or by accident – New Guinea is definitely not the place to do it. Although the practice of “payback killings” has been illegal for a century, many of the Pacific island’s inhabitants continue to adhere to the ancient tribal code. It works like this: if a relative of yours is killed, you have a right to personally kill the offender. However, retribution must be delivered on the same day as the original offense. If for some reason that isn’t possible, the families of the victim and the perpetrator must arrange for monetary compensation instead. Then, if the payment demand isn’t met, the “payback killing” becomes permissible again.

Do not say, “I will do to him as he has done to me; I will pay the man back for what he has done.”

Proverbs 24:29

Presidential Prayer Team; J.K. – More Than a Trace

A minister preached a sermon on the topic of the Day of Judgment. The congregation, struck by the devastating truths of Scripture, was greatly alarmed, but the preacher told them there was something even more alarming; in two hours, he said, they would likely be little affected with these things, almost as if they had never heard them at all.

Apply your heart to instruction and your ear to words of knowledge.

Proverbs 23:12

It is one thing to hear God’s Word, but if there is no action that follows – no application to how you live – nothing comes of it. You must receive His words with meekness, delight in them, and bow your will to the authority of them. Be determined to pursue wisdom. Commentator Matthew Henry says, “The heart is then applied to the instruction when the instruction is applied to the heart.”

Presidential Prayer Team; G.C. – Doggies and Dilemmas

Have you ever wondered why your dog has floppy ears? With the exception of the elephant, only domesticated animals have floppy ears. When an animal is bred selectively for one trait – like compatibility with people – often something unexpected happens; for instance, floppy ears.

Incline your ear, and hear the words of the wise.

Proverbs 22:17

Genetic engineering can’t predict or control every result. Should the lessons of history cause one to pause for a moment of consideration before eagerly tinkering with the blueprints of human life? Many scientists are shouting – yes! But others don’t want to wait and are using the courts to move forward. The world has yet to see the results of these moral dilemmas being played out daily in genetic laboratories and universities.

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W. – Directing the Flow

Water is a powerful force, but it changes direction very easily. Men can redirect the flow of water by building canals and dams. Even a small beaver can change the direction of a stream by piling up rocks and sticks.

The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.

Presidential Prayer Team; G.C. – Extenders

Are you thinking of next year’s tax bill yet? Strangely, some are – and with anticipation! They are recipients of “tax extender” provisions. It’s the federal package in which lawmakers offer tax breaks to a select few. The practice started with the Technical and Miscellaneous Revenue Act of 1988, which wrapped several tax breaks together in an effort to make reauthorization a simple process. It was meant to be a temporary measure, but like many government benefits, it has ballooned out of control.

Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.P. – Eternal Mindset

This world is a dangerous place to live. No one will make it out alive. Yet the Christian need not be worried, fearful, hateful, or bitter. Instead, believers in Jesus are to be loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle, and temperate.

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.

Proverbs 18:10

To maintain these qualities during difficulties, people must turn to God as their refuge and seek the counsel of the Holy Spirit. Today’s verse depicts the Lord as a tower that serves as both a place of shelter as well as protection. As you run to Him, you also realize God does not think like humans do. He looks at people and circumstances from an eternal perspective. He’s not overly concerned about His children being comfortable. He’s more concerned for eternal souls.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R.- Strife and Stomachaches

December 7, 1941, the Sunday Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, was called the “date which will live in infamy” by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. But there was another date of infamy involving Japan and the United States – on January 9, 1992. That was the day when President George H.W. Bush, attending an elaborate state dinner in Tokyo, became suddenly ill and threw up on Japanese Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa. Even worse, the embarrassing incident was replayed endlessly on television news shows around the world.

Better is a dry morsel with quiet than a house full of feasting with strife.

Judges 7:1-9

Today’s world is run by numbers. Television shows are produced or cancelled depending on ratings. Politicians rise or fall depending on polls. If we’re not careful, we can evaluate God’s work the same way. Numbers, in their proper place, aren’t wrong. After all, an entire book of the Bible is named Numbers.
