Presidential Prayer Team; J.K.- Guarding Character

One Bible commentary states that “many hidden beauties burst into view upon the pages of the Bible, when faith’s open eye looks through it on the face of Jesus.” Today’s verse talks of the love and faithfulness of God who supplied the person who paid the price for your sin…that man, Jesus. “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13) That is exactly what Christ did. Sin is forgiven. The wise man, as a result, will fear the Lord, having great awe and reverence for the One who provided the way for salvation.

By steadfast love and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for…by the fear of the Lord one turns away from evil.

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W. – Godly Guidance

Famous evangelist Billy Graham has been privy to some of the most important decisions in the nation’s recent history. Every president since World War II has met with him to seek counsel on professional and personal matters – from war, to the existence of Heaven, to marital affairs. Two presidents, Johnson and Nixon, offered him government positions that Graham politely refused. Instead, through his crusades and messages, Graham has provided spiritual guidance to hundreds of millions of people.

Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.

Joyce Meyer – Waiting Well

But let endurance and steadfastness and patience have full play and do a thorough work, so that you may be [people] perfectly and fully developed [with no defects], lacking in nothing.—James 1:4

Patience is extremely important for people who want to glorify God and enjoy their lives. If we are impatient, the situations we encounter in life will certainly cause us to react emotionally.

The next time you have to wait on something or someone, instead of just reacting, try reminding yourself, Getting upset will not make this go any faster, so I might as well enjoy the wait. Then perhaps say out loud, “I am developing patience as I wait, so I am thankful in this situation.” If you do that, you will be acting on the Word of God rather than reacting to the unpleasant circumstance.

Presidential Prayer Team;  H.L.M. – Random Acts

Jamie-Lynne Knighten stood in the checkout line with a $200 grocery bill, a crying baby and a declined credit card. That’s when 28-year-old Matthew Jackson stepped up and asked if he could cover the cost. Knighten agreed when Jackson said he wanted nothing in return. He simply asked her to do the same for someone else. A week later, Knighten called Jackson’s boss to tell of his kindness. The manager began to cry. Less than 24 hours after Jackson paid Knighten’s grocery bill, he was killed in a car accident.

Blessed is he who is generous to the poor.

Proverbs 14:21

Knighten quickly created a Facebook page called, “Matthew’s Legacy.” Soon there were people all over the world responding who agreed to share a random act of kindness. In fact, when Jackson’s sister and brother-in-law were driving to the memorial service, they stopped with their four children for a meal. When they finished eating, a stranger had already paid their bill!

Presidential Prayer Team; C.H. – Friendly Counsel

For thousands of years, there have been legends of rejuvenating waters. Writings of the fifth century Greek historian Herodotus spoke of a mythical fountain that granted youth to those who drank or bathed in it. The Spanish explorer Ponce De Leon was searching for the fountain when he landed in Florida in 1513. Youth was a powerful motivator for the conquistador to venture into the unknown.

The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.

Presidential Prayer Team; – Verbal Fitness

This year, what if you put the same amount of energy into the fitness of your tongue as you might into the fitness of your body? According to the Bible, your words will reflect the health of your soul like your waistline reflects the health of your heart. The book of Matthew states that it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks; the good person out of his good treasure and the evil person out of his evil treasure.

Rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.P. – Two Seas

Helen Steiner Rice’s poem A Key to Living is Giving compares the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea. The Sea of Galilee is fresh water and plants thrive. With no outlets, the Dead Sea is full of salt and nothing grows there. The poem teaches that when you let God’s blessing flow through you like the Jordan flows through the Sea of Galilee, you become productive and full of life.

One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R. – Eternal Remembrance

Hopefully, no one hates you this much. In the fourteenth century in England, theologian John Wycliffe believed God was calling him to translate the Holy Bible from Latin into English. Until then, parishioners went to church where the Scriptures were interpreted for them by priests. What Wycliffe proposed to do was illegal…and not well received. Wycliffe somehow avoided being burned at the stake – the typical fate of instigators in that age – and died a natural death. But 41 years later, authorities decided a normal burial was too good for Wycliffe. They had his bones dug up, burned, and scattered in a river. The plan was for his name and his work to be forever wiped from history.

The memory of the righteous is a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.K.- Reverence Deserved

Christmas has come and gone. Maybe you gave or received a gift that came with instructions. Did you put first things first and read the directions before doing anything else? First things first – it means to sequence tasks so your ultimate goal will be completed successfully.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

Proverbs 9:10

Apply this to your life in 2016. Plan to have a closer relationship with the Lord. You will want to make the right decisions when the tests of life come upon you. Understand that God gives wisdom only to those who approach life with a deep awe and fear of Him, to those who love Him with their heart and soul, and to those who recognize Him as Creator God whose plans stand firm. He will give you understanding and guidance when you show Him the reverence He so deserves.

Presidential Prayer Team; H.L.M. – True Source

British nature enthusiast Bear Grylls, who starred in both TV series Man vs. Wild and Born Survivor, believed in God as a child. It was at age 16, though, when Grylls lost his godfather that he climbed up in a tree and gave his heart to the Lord. Now he knows his faith is the key to his daily survival.

For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord.

Proverbs 8:35

“I really, desperately have learned in my life that I need my faith, and I’m just not strong enough on my own. I try to start every day by kneeling down and saying, ‘Lord Jesus, I ain’t got it all right, and I’m nervous about today. I will give it my all, but will you help me?’” said Grylls.

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W – Remember This

Did you know that if the human brain were an actual computer, it would have up to 2.5 million gigabytes of storage? Yet even with all of this capacity, humans still tend to forget things, so they have adapted ways to help. The act of tying a string around your finger to help you remember something dates back to when people would tie a piece of cloth around any part of their body that hurt. This was done to keep the “spirit of life” in that part of the body and prevent the pain from spreading; therefore, tying a string around the finger was believed to keep the memory there.

Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.H. – Wee Examples

Ants are tiny but interesting beings. They are found almost everywhere on Earth. They work together in colonies to accomplish more and are one of the strongest creatures in relation to their size. Don’t let their wee stature fool you. These miniature insects work hard.

Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise.

Presidential Prayer Team; G.C.- Value Proposition

“It’s not hard to make decisions once you know what your values are.” The famous quip by Roy Disney highlights the connection between beliefs and behavior. But what if the values are based on faulty thinking? For example, ancient Egyptian physicians regularly dripped bat blood into the eyes of those suffering from eye disease. Accepted wisdom of the time observed bats navigate well at night; therefore, absorbing the blood of bats would likely result in great eyesight. If you lived in Egypt then, would you have had the courage to buck that wisdom? Probably not – unless you had the understanding to believe something else.

Be attentive to my wisdom.

Joyce Meyer – By Your Fruit

Even so, every healthy (sound) tree bears good fruit [worthy of admiration], but the sickly (decaying, worthless) tree bears bad (worthless) fruit.—Matthew 7:17

The fruit in our lives (our behavior) comes from somewhere. A person who is angry is that way for a reason. His reaction is the bad fruit of a bad tree with bad roots. It is important for us to take a close and honest look at our fruit as well as our roots.

In my own life, there was a lot of bad fruit. I experienced regular bouts of depression, negativity, self-pity, a quick temper, and the chip-on-the-shoulder syndrome. I was harsh, rigid, legalistic, and judgmental. I held grudges and was fearful.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.P. – Little Things

What has God put on your heart for this New Year? Consider that five basic responsibilities of a Christian are to seek God, to pray, to serve, to give, and to be thankful.

Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.

Proverbs 4:27

Seek God: “You have said, ‘Seek my face.’ My heart says to you, ‘Your face, Lord, do I seek’” (Psalm 27:8). Intercede: “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people” (I Timothy 2:1). Serve: “Through love serve one another” (Galatians 5:13). Give: “Give, and it will be given to you…For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you” (Luke 6:38). Be thankful: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (I Thessalonians 5:18).

John MacArthur – Strength for Today – From Doctrine to Duty

“I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, entreat you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called” (Ephesians 4:3).

There can be no right living without right principles.

Imagine someone saying, “I have some extra money lying around. I think I’ll send a large check to the government.” Absurd, isn’t it? But every year, honest wage-earners fill out forms and give part of their income to the government. Why? It’s not because they are generous but because there is a law— a doctrine—that says they have to.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R.- Experience Count

What have you “inherited” from 2015? Maybe it was your greatest year ever. Perhaps it was a nightmare you’d rather never repeat. Either way, now is a good time to reflect upon your experiences – good and bad – so that you can learn from them. Notes author John Maxwell: “Experience is not the best teacher. Evaluated experience is the best teacher. Reflective thinking is needed to turn experience into insight. We draw lessons from the past only when we study it.”

The wise will inherit honor, but fools get disgrace.

Proverbs 3:35

In this presidential election year, you will hear endless discussion of the various candidates’ experience. Why? Because Americans want a Chief Executive who has a record of success – someone who has been an effective leader regardless of the circumstances.

Presidential Prayer Team;  J.K. – Spirit-filled Consequences

Men feverishly rushed to California in the l840s looking for gold and silver. They sacrificed their lives to search for the precious metals. Miners discovered copper in the mountains of Arizona, and today companies run 24-7 to bring it out of the ground.

Seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures.

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W. – New Year Fear Antidote

Studies show terrorist acts have increased almost fivefold since the 9/11 attacks on the United States. An increase in attacks escalates fear. The Washington Post recently reported that 83 percent of Americans were fearful that a terrorist attack resulting in large casualties was likely in the near future. This fear can be paralyzing and keep people from living life to the fullest.

Whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.

Proverbs 1:33

King Solomon wrote about the power of wisdom in Proverbs, a book that will be the focus of this month’s Vantage Point devotionals. Today’s verse starts the New Year by declaring one of the greatest hopes of knowing Jesus as your Savior. Scripture says Jesus became God’s wisdom for you (I Corinthians 1:30). Knowing Him won’t stop terrorism or keep bad things from happening in life. It will, however, give you peace, security, and remove your fear.

As you pray today, ask for protection for you and the country against evil in 2016. Ask also for insight for yourself and the nation’s leaders in dealing with events like terrorism. Then thank God for the wisdom and peace He provides even in the midst of life’s disasters.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R.  – Regeneration Over Resolutions

You are one day from a new beginning. It’s probably not the time for pessimism – but according to research published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, 25 percent of Americans fail to keep their New Year’s resolutions for a full two weeks. The long-term success rate is eight percent. Change is difficult.

Truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.

John 3:3

Jesus was talking about something much more profound in John 3 in His conversation with Nicodemus, a Pharisee. You may or may not maintain your new exercise regimen, diet, reading plan, or other resolution because it’s largely a matter of willpower. But regeneration – being “born again” – is the work of the Holy Spirit. It is immediate, supernatural, permanent and irreversible. Spirit-inspired resolutions can’t fail.

The best resolution for 2016 may be found in Proverbs 3:5-6. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” This is the formula for success – for you and for America.
