Ezekiel prophesied to a rebellious and stiff-necked people whose disbelief and unbending spirit would warrant them the worst punishment of all – separation from God. The four cherubim came to execute that judgment.

Then the cherubim lifted up their wings, with the wheels beside them, and the glory of the God of Israel was over them.

Ezekiel 11:22

Ezekiel’s vision of the cherubim and their corresponding wheels (a wheel within a wheel with foreboding rims having eyes on every side) is a reminder that “the eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.” (Proverbs 15:3) Those people who do evil should be fearful, but those who remain righteous will be encouraged. “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him.” (II Chronicles 16:9)

God’s punishment for Israel was total defeat by their enemies, resulting in exile to a foreign country. They trusted in their own “beauty” (Ezekiel 16:15) instead of trusting in the One who made them great.

Dear ones, let your prayers ascend to the Lord who made this country prosper. Intercede for its leaders and people who put their faith in themselves instead of His goodness.

And I heard a voice from heaven, like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of loud thunder. And I heard the sound of harpists playing their harps. They sang as it were a new song before the throne. . . .

—Revelation 14:2–3

Sometimes we see heaven depicted as a place where people sit around on clouds, strumming on their personal harps in boredom. While it is true there will be harps in heaven, not everyone will be playing them. In Revelation 14:2, John the apostle was describing a stringed instrument. It was a point of reference for him: “And I heard a voice from heaven, like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of loud thunder. And I heard the sound of harpists playing their harps.”

Maybe we could update this scene in heaven by saying there were a lot of guitarists rocking out on their electric guitars. The point is that it isn’t boring; it is a celebration of a new song that is being sung.

Every believer should have a new song. The psalmist David wrote, “He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps. He has put a new song in my mouth—praise to our God; many will see it and fear, and will trust in the Lord” (Psalm 40:2–3).

If you have trusted in Christ, if you have been lifted from a pit of despair, then you have a new song. Did you know that? It doesn’t need to be a literal song. You don’t have to walk around and sing, “I used to be an unbeliever . . . but now I am a Christian. . . .” Rather, it is the idea of having a new message.

So stop singing the old song. Sing the new song. Let others know what Christ has done for you. That is what these believers in heaven were doing. And that is what we ought to do.

God has wonderful dreams just for you! On those days when you feel hopeless and abandoned, remember He has not forgotten you. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you…plans for wholeness and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Hope is the expectation of the belief that something better is yet to come. Hope is one of His greatest gifts to you. Hope is the promise that He has for your today and your tomorrows.

Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. Jeremiah 33:3

Your expectations of God and His promises may fall short of His grand plans because He sees the big picture and has in store the best for you. That means He may not always provide the answer you want on your timetable, but He will respond according to His plan. God loves you more than anyone! It’s worth the wait!

Pray with hopeful expectation. Bring your requests confidently to God. Put your hope in the Lord and be prepared for Him to go beyond everything you can imagine! Then intercede for God to also renew the hope of believers in America…so they may share His promises with others.

I have proclaimed glad tidings of righteousness in the great assembly [tidings of uprightness and right standing with God]. Behold, I have not restrained my lips, as You know, O Lord. —Psalm 40:9

What would happen if every morning we gave our mouth to God so that only godly things came out of our lips? Psalm 34:13 says, “Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.”

Dedicate your mouth to God and use it only for what pleases Him: praise and worship and edification and exhortation and giving thanks. Put your lips on the altar each morning. Give your mouth to God through praying His Word: “O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise” (Psalm 51:15).

Psalm 40:16

Though some people use the terms happiness and joy interchangeably, there is a vast difference in their meaning. Both cause a pleasant emotional response, but the former relies entirely upon circumstance. As soon as difficulty arises and pain intrudes, a person ceases to be happy. On the other hand, joy is a gift from God that enables believers to find hope and peace—even when life seemingly falls apart.

At times, however, even Christians live joylessly. Sinful behavior, of course, is one reason. But there can be other causes, too, including regret about past failures, fear of future mishaps, or a pattern of discontentment that’s ingrained in one’s personality.

If you are a follower of Jesus but lack gladness, take a moment to remember who Christ is—and who you are in Him. To begin with, you are saved eternally, and your name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. The love of almighty God is unconditional, and His indwelling Spirit will never abandon you. He understands everything that you face and promises to provide for your needs.

When you stop to consider the amazing blessings that are yours in Christ, gratitude will likely overwhelm you. Sadness concerning circumstances may still endure, but the joy of the Lord will carry you through even the deepest pain.

Through life’s good times and bad, does God’s joy sustain you? Or do trials leave you hopeless and discontented? Our Father offers a higher way of living—not without pain but with strength to endure. Continually remember the vast treasure you have in Him and His promises.
