Campus Crusade for Christ; Bill Bright – He Gives Us a New Song to Sing

“He has given me a new song to sing, of praise to our God. Now many will hear of the glorious things He did for me, and stand in awe before the Lord, and put their trust in Him” (Psalm 40:3).

Jim was big man on campus, president of his fraternity and an atheist. He ridiculed all those who professed faith in God, especially the Christians in his fraternity house.

I was invited, over his objections, to speak at one of their weekly meetings. A number of fraternity brothers were active in Campus Crusade and insisted that I come even though Jim resented the idea. Yet, upon completion of my message, he was one of the very first to respond and, after further counsel, received Christ. He became one of the most joyful, radiant, contagious, fruitful witnesses for Christ on the entire campus.

He had a new song to sing, a song of praise to God who had liberated him from a life of decadence and deceit. Now his heart fairly burst with joy as he developed a strategy to help reach every key student for Christ on a great university campus.

There is no greater joy in life than that of sharing Christ with others, and there is no greater joy that comes to another than that which comes with the assurance of salvation when one receives Christ into his life.

Would you like to be an instrument of God to cause others to sing praises to Him? Then tell them the glorious things He has done for you and for them, and encourage them to place their trust in Christ.

TODAY’S ACTION POINT: Today I will seek every opportunity to encourage others to receive Christ so that they can join with me in singing a new song of praise to our God, and together we will share the glorious things He does for us when we place our trust in Him.

In last month’s trials for the television program American Idol, judge Jennifer Lopez denied one contestant the opportunity to continue, saying that while her voice was lovely, there were “no feelings from the heart” behind it. She explained to the would-be songstress that without that emotion, there was nothing to connect to, only notes coming from her mouth.

He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God

Psalm 40:3

You might not have the voice of a soloist or even a member of the chorus, but if the song you sing comes from what God has put in your heart, you are a part of that heavenly choir that harmonizes in worship to Him every day. Think about a tune you already know: “There’s Within My Heart a Melody.” Only days before that song was written, Luther Bridges experienced sorrow and tragedy – the death of his wife and children in a fire. But through it all, Bridges found the song God put in his heart.

What keeps you from singing? Don’t let it! Confess it to the Lord and ask Him to give you a new song. Intercede for the far-from-harmonious Congress that they, too, could find the courage to sing by filling their lives with Jesus Christ.

Have you ever missed a meal? After a while, your stomach aches with hunger. Pangs of emptiness are all you can think about. Your mouth waters in anticipation of something good to eat. And when you finally taste that first bite of food, you think, “This is the best sandwich I’ve ever had.”

He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.

Psalms 40:3

Waiting for things we desire often makes getting them seem even better. In the verses leading up to today’s passage, David cried out to the Lord in his despair, then “waited patiently” (Psalm 40:1). God pulled him out of a pit and onto solid ground, which filled David with a song of praise. One could say it was David’s “best sandwich” moment.

America is in need of rescue. While many Christians have become discouraged, this psalm brings a message of hope. God didn’t leave David in the pit. He didn’t leave Jesus in the grave, and He won’t leave America in despair. Call to Him for help. Pray for Him to come to the aid of your national leaders, as well as all Americans. The Creator of all things will put a new song in your mouth – the best one ever.
