Presidential Prayer Team; G.C. – Prayer Return

What happens in Heaven when you pray for America, or the world, or even your neighbor next door? Sometimes it doesn’t seem like very much. Do you ever wonder if those prayers are actually getting through?

The smoke of incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God.

Revelation 8:4

Here is the word picture of your prayers as described in the book of Revelation. In the future, when it’s time, God will reveal Himself to mankind in strength and holiness. Until then, your prayers and those of every saint from all of history are accumulating on an altar before the throne of God. Take a moment and imagine all of those prayers mingling together to make a brightly burning fire reminding God of His love for mankind and His promise to deliver us from sin.

Those prayers will be returned to Earth as an instrument of God’s judgment. It’s astonishing, and somewhat terrifying, to think every faithful prayer to God for the redemption of the world will be answered all at once! Scripture say’s not one will be lost or go unaddressed. Don’t stop praying for God’s mercy on America.

Presidential Prayer Team; H.L.M. – Be Influential

When she was four, Kimberly Dawn dreamed of becoming a famous country singer. But there were several challenges along the way: shyness, loss of her family home to a fire, and caring for an ailing family member. Yet with God’s help, Kimberly overcame the barriers that held her from her dreams. In 2013, she began releasing music and playing at bigger venues. In fact, last year Kimberly was named “one of the most influential voices of this generation of country/gospel music.” Now she wants to minister to others who are struggling.

And when the king saw Queen Esther standing in the court, she won favor in his sight.

Esther 5:2

“As a society we sometimes find ourselves trapped in certain ideas or beliefs; God is a merciful God and He wants our love and trust,” Kimberly says. “Whatever circumstance you are going through, know that you can overcome any obstacle. God has already given His children favor and grace.”

God extends His blessings to those who choose to believe Him even when evidence says otherwise – and often positions them to influence others through their faith in Him. Choose to live by His Word and listen to His Holy Spirit. Pray also that your leaders will seek to know Him in a deeper way so they can have more impact for Him.

Ravi Zacharias Ministry – This is Water

There are patterns of thought that come as natural to us as our daily routines. These patterns of thought emerge from constructs and experiences that color and shape the way in which we view the world and they can emerge in the most unexpected ways. Sometimes we simply repeat what we have heard. Mindless phrases spill out of our mouths forming the patterns of response—even when the response is incongruent with the situation. “It is what it is,” we say, when compassionate silence is called for or “Everything has a reason” when faced with inexplicable chaos.

I recognize in my own life how these patterns of thought belie my true way of viewing the world, much to my chagrin. Oftentimes, they reveal callousness to the suffering of others. I’ll tell someone, “I’ll keep you in my thoughts and prayers” as a substitute for tangible assistance. Or my desire to fit every happening into a neat, understandable package compels me to speak when I first should listen.

Regardless of the situation, it seems a sad reality that so often these patterns of thought and action revolve around placing the self at the center of everything. Many function as if the world really does revolve around the immediate and urgent demands of living. Everything else is simply an incursion into the routine of putting me, myself, and I front and center. I automatically feel offended, for example, when cut off in traffic. I automatically feel slighted or defensive that my very presence doesn’t delight and soothe the unhappy. I groan at the inconvenience of having to wait in another line and when I finally have my turn, I take offense at the clerk who doesn’t smile at me the way in which I think I deserve.

The late author David Foster Wallace exposed the routines of thought and action that place the self at the center in his lauded address to graduates of Kenyon College.(1) In his remarks regarding the benefits of a liberal arts education in shaping one’s ability to think, he suggests that it is the “most obvious, important realities that are the hardest to talk about.”(2) Indeed, the acknowledgement that when left to their own devices humans think and behave in self-centered ways is one of those obvious realities; one of those routines of thought that mostly goes unmentioned. He continues, “The choice is really about what to think about and how we think about it…to have just a little critical awareness… because a huge percentage of the stuff that I tend to be automatically certain of is, it turns out, totally wrong and deluded.”(3) Rarely, Foster Wallace notes, do we think about how we think because what is revealed is that we are basically selfish in action and thought ninety-nine percent of the time.

But what if we really made thinking about how we think the routine? Foster Wallace conducts a thought experiment to illustrate how this can be done. What if the car that cuts me off in traffic is not about being in my way or being rude to me, but is a father trying to rush his sick son to the hospital or the doctor and I am in his way? What if the person who is critical of me or sullen towards me has only known criticism and neglect her whole life? What if the grocery bagger is not without social skills, but someone who has had little opportunity, whose parents’ have split up, and whose general home-life is nothing but misery? How different these situations might look if I took the time to think! Indeed, what if my routine became first thinking of the other person?

One of the beautiful aspects of the Christian gospel is that we really don’t have to live for ourselves in order to find the good life. In fact, the opposite is true: those who seek to save their lives will lose them. Jesus offered an alternative vision as the one who came to serve. As the apostle Paul encouraged the Philippian Christians to not merely look out for their own interests, but also to have the interests of others in mind, he looked to the life of Jesus. “Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who although he existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself taking the form of a servant and made in the likeness of human beings.” How different the world might look if each day we took time to think about the needs of someone else—even just once per day? In so doing, how might that change the very patterns of thought that conspire to keep us living at the center of our own universe, embittered by all the ways we have been slighted?

Foster Wallace concludes his address by telling the Kenyon graduates:

“Our own present culture has harnessed these forces in ways that have yielded extraordinary wealth and comfort and personal freedom. The freedom all to be lords of our tiny skull-sized kingdoms, alone at the center of all creation…. But of course there are all different kinds of freedom, and the kind that is most precious you will not hear much talk about much in the great outside world of wanting and achieving. The really important kind of freedom involves attention and awareness and discipline, and being able to truly care about other people and to sacrifice for them over and over in myriad…ways every day.”(4)

Presidential Prayer Team; G.C. – Simplify the Process

One day a newbie manager told his boss that automating their tax calculation wasn’t a good idea because eventually the workers would forget how to calculate it manually. His boss replied “Well son, I don’t know how to crank start my car, either. Sometimes it’s just time to simplify a process.”

We have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will.

Colossians 1:9

Today’s world is complex—and as American culture moves away from traditional Christian values, there seems to be even more confusion and a spiritual battle on every front. At times it’s hard to discern how you should stand for your religious liberty…and it gets even more frustrating when your most sincere words or actions get twisted into something hateful or even illegal!

When you are unsure how to occupy your place in the world, apply today’s verse and pray passionately for Christ’s followers across the nation to be strengthened and filled with God’s knowledge and spirit. Culture war is complicated but God’s plan is simple – believers are to pray!

Presidential Prayer Team; C.H. – Hide and Seek

One of the earliest known records of the game Hide and Seek was described by the second century Greek writer Julius Pollux – only this Greek game was called Apodidraskinda. Over the years, children in different countries have created variations, but it’s still one of the widest known kid’s activities.

So he paid the fare and went down into it…away from the presence of the Lord.

Jonah 1:3

Jonah wasn’t playing a game when he ran from God, but he hid nevertheless. And the Lord sought him. God asked Jonah to share His Word with the Ninevites, but the prophet ran away. He questioned the Lord’s calling, but God pursued him.

There may be times where you’ll doubt the Lord’s plans for your life. Instead of going to Him in prayer, you’ll run the other way. Your Heavenly Father will look for you. “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” (Proverbs 19:21) If you’re questioning God, ask Him to reveal His will. Then pray for national leaders who doubt God’s existence to feel His presence…so that those who are hiding from their Creator will be found.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.P. – Selective Hearing

The ability to focus on one sound and block out the rest is called selective hearing. People who live by railroad tracks are able to thrive in their homes because of selective hearing. However, there can be a downside, such as children blocking out their parents’ instructions as they focus on texting.

So we fasted and implored our God for this, and he listened to our entreaty.

Ezra 8:23

Selective hearing seems to be in operation when it comes to fasting, too. People remember to pray, but forget about fasting. Ezra knew what to do when he found himself in threatening situations, such as leading the Israelites from Babylon back to Jerusalem. He didn’t want to request protection from the king because he had previously boasted how God would take care of them (Ezra 8:22). So he called a fast.

Fasting isn’t just for way back then. It’s also required in this day and age. Jesus said “when” you fast, not if you do (Matthew 6:16). Set aside a regular day to fast, pray and seek God’s face. The Lord will respond to your requests, and because you will be in tune with His Spirit, you will be better able to recognize His answers.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.K. – Purified and Empowered

Within a short period of time, God would be silent for the next 400 years. Ezra, Nehemiah and Malachi were contemporaries in a time of Israel’s subjugation and captivity. Nehemiah mourned the devastation of Jerusalem, and in God’s sovereignty he was allowed to return, uniting a remnant of Israel to complete the task of rebuilding the wall. Once there was physical security, the people needed spiritual inspiration. Ezra read the law of Moses to the people. The remnant wept and repented. In today’s verse, Nehemiah told them to let their grief turn to rejoicing and to trust in the Lord.

Do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

Nehemiah 8:10

So it is for you. Understand where your unbelief has caused you to doubt God’s truth and presence in your life. You will have “seasonable sorrows…but we should never lose sight of all that God has done for us. It is our privilege to walk joyfully before the Lord.” (Rev. Charles Simeon)

It was once said that weeping will cleanse, but joy is the strengthener. Pray that as you study God’s Word, your heart will be purified and your faith empowered. Then intercede for the leaders and citizens of this nation…that their repentance will turn to joy in the Lord.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R. – Stunning Expanse

Can you put a price tag on the value of a life? In legal cases involving wrongful deaths, courts rely on the testimony of “forensic economists.” These professionals are charged with making grim calculations to determine how much a life was worth – monetarily. It is not a pleasant job. Estimating loss of wages and income of the person who died is required, as well as determining compensation for pain and suffering. In general, the value of a life is higher for people who earned more money, were deemed to hold greater potential, or left more loved ones behind.

But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.

Ephesians 4:7

Now imagine if a “forensic economist” placed a value on the life of Jesus Christ. What would the price tag be? He owned it all. He gave others eternal life and offered salvation for the entire world. And yet Scripture says that the grace He gives to you is equal to the “measure of Christ’s gift.” Does that give you an idea of the stunning expanse of His grace?

As you pray today, may that measure of His grace spur you to cast away doubt and live in Christ-given confidence. Because of that vast grace, there is hope – for you, your loved ones, and for America.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.H. – Sagging Foundation

In older homes, a common problem is an uneven floor. The sag results from carrying more weight over time than the supports can hold. The solution is simple – add more support beams to help distribute the weight.

The mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision of the night. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

Daniel 2:19

In today’s passage, when King Nebuchadnezzar threatened to kill all of the wise men of Babylon if they couldn’t interpret his dream, Daniel knew he needed more support. He told the king’s advisor he would interpret the dream. “Then Daniel went to his house and made the matter known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions, and told them to seek mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery.” (Daniel 2:17-18) Daniel gathered with friends to pray, and God answered his specific prayer.

When your circumstances cause you to doubt and fear, seek more support. Gather together with friends and take your concerns about this country to the God of the Universe. Email prayers for the nation to your leaders in Washington D.C. and band together to provide more support for this country’s sagging spiritual foundation.

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W. – Get Going

The saying “When the going gets tough, the tough get going” has been attributed to both Joseph P. Kennedy and to football player and coach Knute Rockne. The lesser known interpretation of the phrase is that when a situation becomes difficult, those who appear strong leave for fear of being proven the opposite.

Saul will despair of seeking me any longer within the borders of Israel, and I shall escape out of his hand.

I Samuel 27:1

Today’s verse says this is what David did after seven years of running from Saul. Even though God had anointed David as the next king, he was living like a fugitive. King Saul was hunting him down to kill him. The stress and strain caused David to forget God’s promises. He began to doubt the Lord so badly that he left the Promised Land to live among his enemies, the Philistines.

Are you going through a season of tough times? Don’t doubt God’s promises. “Get going” back to His Word and allow it to strengthen your faith. Pray for His promises to be fulfilled – and for the nation to turn back to Him (II Chronicles 7:14).

Presidential Prayer Team; G.C. – Not Quieted

McCarthyism, the political practice of publicizing accusations of disloyalty or subversion about someone – do you think it is a thing of the past? Remember when Brendan Eich was named CEO of Mozilla: he pledged to ensure the company would “remain a place that includes and supports everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, age, race, ethnicity, economic status or religion.” Yet when it became known Eich had donated towards a campaign which sought to ban same-sex marriage in his state, he was deemed a bigot and forced to step down.

I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.

John 17:15

In her book Silencing, Kirsten Powers notes a new McCarthyism taking place in America today. She quotes research showing 47 percent of 18-30 year olds think the First Amendment goes too far in protecting free speech…especially when it comes to the expression of traditional Christian values.

Jesus knew He was leaving His disciples in a hostile environment. Today your faith may indeed be negatively impacting your career or even setting you at odds with your family. Don’t be discouraged – and don’t be quieted. Jesus has already prayed asking the Father to protect you, so be faithful in speaking the words of Christ with love and respect.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.P. – Prayer or Consequences

In the early church, James had been recently martyred and Peter was imprisoned. Fearing the same thing could happen to Peter, Christians got together and prayed. When a servant girl Rhoda told them Peter was at the door, they thought she was crazy. She insisted – and they went to see the answer to their prayers for themselves.

So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church.

Acts 12:5

Just before the crucifixion, Jesus said to Peter, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” (Luke 22:31-32). Can you imagine what would’ve happened if Jesus hadn’t prayed?

If you believe God answers prayers, make it a priority to intercede, believing that God’s ears are attentive to your prayers and will save, heal, protect, lead, and cause the gospel to be spread. Avoid unimportant arguments and inane distractions. Remain focused and humble. After all, so much depends on your prayers…including the welfare of this nation.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.K. – Keep Doubt Away

Unbelief is instability. Abraham was to be the father of a great nation, and for years he waited; his trust waivered and he went ahead of God, having a son by Hagar. But then he doubted the Lord’s promise no longer, giving only glory to Him and growing stronger in his faith until the promise was fulfilled in Isaac. “That is why his faith was ‘counted to him as righteousness.’” (Romans 4:22)

No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith.

Romans 4:20

Has your faith weakened? Is there instability in your life, uncertainty on the job or an attitude of rebellion at school? Is government corruption making you doubt that any good will prevail? Or is it closer to home…has pain or sorrow made you doubt God’s goodness?

God’s promise is true. He “will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5) His plan is to work all things together for good for those who believe (Romans 8:28). In everything, give Him thanks and praise – keep unbelief and doubt away. Trust Him to give you peace. Grow in your faith as you study His Word. Then intercede for this nation and your family…for the stability that only belief in God can give.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.R.- Go with God

Perhaps you, like many Americans, are invested in the stock market saving and planning for the day when you will retire and, hopefully, live comfortably from investments that have grown over time. Now suppose you are deciding which stock to purchase and the company you are considering issues a press release warning of its “strong belief that there will be no value for the common stockholders…even in the most optimistic of scenarios.” Would you buy?

For where you go I will go…Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.

Ruth 1:16

This really happened. In 2011 Blockbuster, the once-ubiquitous movie video rental company, went bankrupt – and then actually took the unusual step of cautioning investors that its stock was worthless after some false reports spurred a surge in interest.

On the face of it, Ruth’s decision to invest her life with Naomi made no more sense than buying Blockbuster stock. Naomi was a widow with no means of support and no prospects for the future. She was a walking economic disaster. But Ruth knew Naomi’s God…and that made all the difference. As you pray for America today, remember that “hopeless” is never hopeless when you go with God!

Presidential Prayer Team; A.W. – Don’t Ever Doubt

A penny might seem very small in the grand scheme of things, but if you put it directly in front of your eye, you can block out the entire sun from your sight. This happens in many of life’s situations. People focus on the issues right in front of them instead of God’s light and it causes them to doubt His power.

Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?

Luke 8:25

The disciples did this, too. In today’s verse, they were traveling by boat across a lake when a storm arose. Focusing on the wind and waves around them, they believed they would perish. However, when they remembered Jesus was with them and called on Him, He calmed the storm. His question to the disciples prior to their incredulous response in today’s verse was, “Where’s your faith?”

Are you focusing on the turmoil going on around you? It’s easy to do – but don’t ever doubt that Jesus is with you and can calm whatever storm you may be encountering right now. Pray He will help you and the nation to focus on Him and strengthen your faith.

Presidential Prayer Team; H.L.M. – Daily Strength

Actor and director Scott Baio is best known for his role as Chachi on the sitcom Happy Days and its spin-off Joanie Loves Chachi. Scott and his wife Renee have been married seven years. Recently Renee was diagnosed with a brain tumor – and this is after she underwent successful lumpectomies for breast cancer in 2010 and 2014.

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

II Corinthians 12:9

“Renee has been down some rough roads in her life, yet each time with her strong faith in God, she comes through a better and stronger person,” Scott says. “During this time we ask for your prayers and support. My wife is my rock. She refuses to even shed one tear, nor will she question God’s will.” Renee adds, “God does not challenge weak people – He has laid this upon me and I’m not going to question it. If I can save one person along the way, I’m okay.”

God’s glorious power is more evident when it is displayed in weak vessels. Surrender your limitations to the Lord. As you do, your faith and your worship will be enhanced as your inadequacies fade. Remember to pray for the Baios. Intercede also for your leaders. Pray they will seek God’s strength for their daily decisions.

Presidential Prayer Team; G.C. – Prayer Pose

According to Harvard researcher Amy Cuddy, assuming a dominant posture can actually increase levels of testosterone and decrease cortisol. She says something as simple as standing hands-on-hips for a few moments will incline you towards greater confidence. Her research correlates a measurable relationship between physical stances and biochemical reactions.

When you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret.

Matthew 6:6

Jesus taught His disciples how to pray with confidence. He told them to avoid religious showmanship. Grabbing attention and praying long loud prayers apparently doesn’t impress God – at all. He knows it’s a performance. Instead, Jesus encouraged His followers to pull away from others in order to be alone and open their hearts in honesty and intimacy before the Lord. It’s in solitude where you best experience God’s presence.

Steal away for a few moments today to be alone and focus your thoughts upon God and His goodness. Pray for America and for God’s people across the land. Strike a pose in your heart, humbly bowing your will in worship and adoration. Be assured, whatever your outward posture, God will see a soul on its knees.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.H. – Small But Great

Christian Thomas, a five-year-old also known as Buddy Backpacker, is officially the youngest person to ever hike the 180-mile Appalachian Trail. With his parents, Christian hiked and learned math, science and languages along the way. The trail is daunting for a hiker of any age, which makes Buddy’s trek all the more incredible. Sometimes small people can do great things.

And it was so…he wrung enough dew from the fleece to fill a bowl with water.

Judges 6:38

In today’s passage, Gideon, “the least” in his family (Judges 6:15), felt really small, too. But God had big plans. When Gideon doubted the Lord’s instructions, he asked for specific confirmation. “If there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said.” (Judges 6:37) God did just as Gideon asked.

Do you question what small acts of faith God can use in your life? Size doesn’t matter when it comes to the Almighty. Pray for God to confirm His plans for you. Then intercede for America and its leaders to move mountains with their faith – no matter the size.

Presidential Prayer Team; C.P. – Labor in Prayer

Currently, young people are waiting well into their thirties to get married. After the age of thirty, fertility rates go down. They may find themselves like Isaac and Rebekah, wondering if they will ever have kids. Isaac didn’t marry Rebekah until he was forty and they didn’t have their twins, Jacob and Esau, until he was sixty.

And Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren. And the Lord granted his prayer.

Genesis 25:21

Isaac and Rebekah were probably desperate as they prayed for children. God had promised Isaac’s father, Abraham, ancestors that were more numerous than the stars. Perhaps Isaac thought those ancestors would not come from him, but from his father’s concubines. In the end, Isaac prayed for twenty years before receiving the promise – and he remained faithful to keep trusting in the word of His God.

The Lord answers the persevering prayer. Do not tire of praying for your family, friends and nation. Just like Rebekah birthed Jacob and Esau, this nation will birth God’s blessings if believers pray and not give up.

Presidential Prayer Team; J.K. – Feeling Alone?

Sometimes you can ask the wrong question. In a difficult situation, “How can I get out of this mess?” may not be appropriate. “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.” (Psalm 34:19) The proper perspective is, “How can God be glorified in this situation?”

Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord.

Exodus 14:13

Think of the Israelites as they fled from Egypt: directed by the Lord into the desert, right to the edge of the Red Sea. Pharaoh and his army pursued them and they imagined nothing but their imminent death. God’s plan, however, was to be victorious – and He was. Later, as Israel entered the Promised Land, their enemies feared them because the Lord had fought for them with great power. His name was glorified (Exodus 15:13-18).

Do you doubt God’s presence in your life or feel alone as you go through a valley? The words “fear not” appear often throughout Scripture. The Lord will be your guide, your comfort and your refuge. Pray that you will stand firm. Then intercede for the people and leaders of this nation that they would praise God and turn to Him for guidance in every circumstance…that His name might be glorified!
