Throughout history, people have tried to get rid of the living God by getting rid of His followers. In fifth century BC Persia, Haman was a particularly arrogant and evil government official who took up the quest. Like others before him, however, he underestimated the power of prayer.

And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

Esther 4:14

God placed two praying people in Haman’s world: Mordecai, a brave and politically savvy man; and Esther, his beautiful orphaned niece. When faced with Haman’s overpowering plot for evil, Mordecai and Esther both fell on their knees before God. Mordecai’s prayer went something like this: Lord, King and ruler, everything is in your power, and there is no one, even Haman, able to oppose you when it is your will to save us. Esther’s prayer: My Lord, you alone are our King, save us from the power of the wicked and deliver me from fear.

As you read the news today, are you concerned over the nation’s distaste for what is holy and good? Consider that God has placed you, like Mordecai and Esther, in this specific time to pray for America. Take courage in a powerful God…and know those setting themselves up to destroy His people will eventually fail.

Esther’s exquisite beauty and character distinguished her in the eyes of Ahasuerus, the king of Persia, who chose her as his queen. Yet it was Esther’s courage that was most notable in the life of this Jewish woman.

Then I will go to the king, though it is against the law, and if I perish, I perish.

Esther 4:16

When Esther learned that the chief court favorite, Haman, planned to massacre the Jews, she asked her people to fast and pray for three days. Then Esther risked her life by preparing a surprise visit to the king to tell him of Haman’s plans. On the day the Jews were to be slaughtered, Haman was instead executed and Esther’s position as queen was strengthened. It was evident that the Lord was the source of her security.

God has not placed you in your present position for your own benefit. He put you there to serve Him. At times this might require great courage and involve risk. Yet the Lord is always with you and He is faithfully at work. So decide to do what your Heavenly Father wants and trust Him for the outcome. Pray also that America’s leaders will put their security in Jesus Christ instead of possessions, position or reputation.

Who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this? —Esther 4:14

The book of Esther contains a wonderful and dramatic story of a beautiful, young Jewish girl named Esther who actually won a beauty contest and, as a result, was made the queen of the kingdom. She was taken into the palace of the king, where she could enjoy the finest food, wear the most beautiful clothing, and have numerous servants at her bidding. She was living in the lap of luxury.

But there was a wicked man named Haman working for the king. He hated the Jewish people and devised a wicked plot to exterminate all the Jews living in the kingdom. Haman was going about his business, seeing to it that his plan would come to pass.

Esther had an uncle named Mordecai who was concerned that his niece was in a place where she could influence the king to turn away from Haman’s horrible plan, yet she was afraid to act. So Mordecai sent this message to Esther:

Do not think in your heart that you will escape in the king’s palace any more than all the other Jews. For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this? (Esther 4:13-14)

So Esther went to the king and appealed to him, and Haman’s wicked plot was averted. Who knows that God has not put you where you are right now for such a time as this? In whatever situation you find yourself, seize the moment. Do what you can. That’s what Esther boldly did.

Find yourself in a situation not of your own choosing? Esther did. Yet she seized the moment and made the most of where God placed her. . . .
