Max Lucado – A Bucket of Prayer

Max Lucado

Behold the power of prayer! In Revelation 8:5, John saw the prayers of the saints and said, “there were noises, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake!” You ask God for help and BAM! Fire falls to the earth. You lift your concerns to heaven, and turbulence happens.

Go ahead. Stand up on behalf of those you love. And yes, stand up on behalf of those you do not. Pray for those who hurt you. The quickest way to douse the fire of anger is with a bucket of prayer. Rather than rant, rave, or seek revenge…pray. Jesus did this. While hanging on the cross, he interceded for his enemies, “Father, forgive them; they don’t know what they are doing.” Even Jesus left his enemies in God’s hands.

Before you say amen—comes the power of a simple prayer!

What is your favorite scent? Perhaps it’s a warm loaf of bread, a special cologne, a crisp fall day, or a freshly-bathed baby. The Lord also has a favorite scent. It is the sweet smell of your prayers!

And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel.

Revelation 8:4

In biblical days, incense was often burned as a sacrificial offering on the Tabernacle altar to serve as an aid in prayer. So the Bible describes prayers as incense that floats up to God like those offerings. Prayer is more than just a welcome aroma for Him; it gives the Lord great pleasure. Proverbs 15:29 says, “He hears the prayer of the righteous.” Yet not only is the sound of your voice something He awaits and treasures; the words from your heart are sweet to Him.

Spend some time each day just quietly listening to the Lord. Then allow the fragrance of your prayers to waft through to His throne room. Pray also that the sweet aroma of believer’s prayers would ascend all across this nation today as they turn their eyes toward Him on behalf of the country, its leaders, and especially the President of the United States.

Greg Laurie – Kept in Heavenly Storage

When He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. —Revelation 5:8

There are times when life just doesn’t seem fair. Things happen that don’t make sense, and we wonder why God didn’t answer our prayer.

But He will answer your prayer — in His way, for His glory, in His time.

Revelation 5:8 gives us this interesting detail about heaven: “The twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.” When we are in heaven and are standing before God’s throne, and when those golden bowls, full of prayers, are brought before us, we will realize that God heard every little prayer that we prayed. And I think we also will understand that His answer was far better than what we asked for in the moment.

We will realize that God overruled something we asked for because it wasn’t the best prayer. What we don’t realize today is this hardship or this tragedy or this inexplicable event ultimately will lead to that event, which will touch that person, which will affect that situation over there.

It will be like a long chain reaction that will produce this, this, and this, all for God’s glory. So that thing you wanted had to go away, or that circumstance had to arise to produce those other things, and ultimately you will give God the glory. In the meantime, you will have to trust Him, knowing that it all will be revealed in heaven when we stand before the Lord.

Some prayers are answered right away. But others are being kept in heavenly storage for an answer to come.

Not only does God keep our tears in a bottle (see Psalm 56:8), but He also keeps our prayers in a bowl. God never throws our prayers away. He stores them for us.
