Today in the Word – Moody Bible Institute – Elect Exiles

 

Read 1 Peter 1:1–2

Peter is one of the most memorable apostles. In the Gospels, he is often the first to speak and act. He jumped out of boats (Matt. 14:22–33) and cut off ears (John 18:10–11). He denied the Lord Jesus three times (Matt. 26:69–75). In a remarkable act of grace, Jesus forgave Peter and reinstalled him as a church leader (John 21:15–19). This month we will study two letters written by Peter. They were not written by the young, impetuous Peter, but by a then mature Christian leader who had given his life to proclaim the resurrection of Jesus.

Peter called his audience by two different descriptions. First, they were addressed as “God’s elect” (v. 1). To be elect means to be chosen. Followers of Jesus are recipients of God’s grace, and it is God who took initiative to make our salvation possible. Peter’s readers were also exiles “scattered” all over Asia Minor (v. 1). An exile is someone displaced from their home country to live elsewhere without legal rights as citizens. Peter’s readers, mostly comprising Jewish Christians, lived outside of Israel. So Peter likely used this term with a double meaning. On one hand, they were literally exiles. But they are also exiles in a spiritual sense—awaiting the coming of the Lord Jesus, their true King and Lord.

Peter continues by reminding his readers that their identity is most firmly grounded in the triune God. The Father chose them, and the Spirit is sanctifying them for the goal of obedience to Jesus Christ, who cleansed them with His blood (v. 2). We also need a regular reminder that our most important identity is not found in our career, nation, or family. Rather, we belong to God who chose us. In Him, we can have grace and peace “in abundance” (v. 2).

Read Numbers 36

Have you ever wrestled with how to balance personal freedom with responsibility to your family or community? Our culture champions individual choice—but God calls us to consider the impact our decisions have on others.

Numbers 36 concludes with a follow-up to an earlier story. The five daughters of Zelophehad had bravely asked for their father’s inheritance because he died with no sons (Num. 27). God honored their request and granted them land rights. Now the leaders worried: Suppose they marry men from other Israelite tribes; then their inheritance will be taken from our ancestral inheritance and added to that of the tribe they marry into. And so part of the inheritance allotted to us will be taken away” (v. 3). If the daughters married outside their tribe, their land would eventually belong to their husbands’ tribes, disrupting God’s carefully planned distribution.

So, God gave guidance: “They may marry anyone they please as long as they marry within their father’s tribal clan” (v. 6). This command preserved the daughters’ rights and the unity of the tribal inheritance. The daughters obeyed (v. 10–12): “Zelophehad’s daughters did as the LORD commanded Moses. Zelophehad’s daughters…married their cousins on their father’s side” (vv. 10–11). They found fulfillment within God’s loving limits.

This story reminds us that God cares about the details of our lives—our personal choices impact His larger purposes. The New Testament reminds us to “not [look] to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others” (Phil. 2:4). Faithfulness means honoring God not only with our personal lives but also how we live within the body of Christ.

Today’s Devotion

As a teenager, I had a strained relationship with my churchmate Lisa, so I was dismayed to learn we’d be roommates at our youth summer camp. The week at camp passed smoothly, though, with both of us being civil.

The most anticipated event was a bonfire gathering at the end of the week. On that evening, however, I had a fever. I went to bed early, but I could hear the laughter and music outside. An hour later, I was startled by Lisa, who was taking my temperature. “I’m not joining them at the bonfire,” she said. “You’re sick. I need to stay with you.” Lisa could’ve stayed uninvolved, but she chose to care for me, which lifted my spirits.

We see another example of someone who cared in the story of Naaman. The commander of the Syrian army, Naaman had an Israelite servant girl who’d been taken captive and now “served Naaman’s wife” (2 Kings 5:2). Separated from family and forced to servitude, the girl could’ve chosen to not help her master, who had leprosy. But her faith moved her to help: “She said to her mistress, ‘If only my master would see the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him’ ” (v. 3). And God did, in fact, use the prophet Elisha to heal Naaman (vv. 8-14).

Lisa and the Israelite girl chose to help, and God worked through them. Let’s ask God to show us who we can extend His care to and give us the wisdom how.

Today’s Insights

At the time of Elisha, Naaman was the only leper who’d been healed (2 Kings 5:1-14; see Luke 4:27). A young girl from Israel had been forcefully taken to a foreign country and was enslaved to serve Naaman’s household (2 Kings 5:2). It would’ve been understandable for her to rejoice that her enemy had leprosy. Yet, she told him that the God of Israel—through the prophet Elisha—had the power to heal him (v. 3). This is an example of “[overcoming] evil with good” (Romans 12:21). Galatians reminds us to “do good to all people” (6:10). Today, we can ask God to show us how we can show His love to others.

Denison Forum – Learning to depend on God’s word

 

As we discussed last week, Scripture lists several reasons why God judges nations that are of particular relevance to America. However, each is also tied closely with a reason why the Lord might bless our nation as well. Today, we’re going to look at the first of those reasons: Our response to God’s word.

Disobedience to God’s word is a “blanket” sin that covers all that follows. Those who are disobedient to his word must face his judgment, since he cannot be a holy God while rewarding sin or a loving Father while blessing that which harms his children.

For example, God upbraided Israel prior to the death of Joshua: “You have not obeyed my voice. What is this you have done?” (Judges 2:2). Accordingly, he warned that he would not “drive out” the nations before them, but “they shall become thorns in your sides” (v. 3).

The Lord similarly revealed to Zechariah:

They made their hearts diamond-hard lest they should hear the law and the words that the Lord of hosts had sent by his Spirit through the former prophets. Therefore great anger came from the Lord of hosts . . . “and I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations that they had not known. Thus the land they left was desolate.” (Zechariah 7:1214)

Days of Praise – Instruction Contrary to Knowledge

“Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.” (Proverbs 19:27)

One of the saddest realities in the modern world is that many of the leaders of evolutionary and humanistic thought were raised in Christian homes, where from an early age they were exposed to the truths of Scripture. Testimonies without number have been chronicled of Christian students going to universities where they were taught to doubt and then to disbelieve the faith of their parents. Perhaps all these students ever knew of Christianity was a set of rules; maybe they never understood the reasons their parents held certain views or the basis for these beliefs. Certainly the foundational teaching of creation has been missing in many Christian homes and churches.

Our primary goal as parents should be to establish a godly heritage—to teach the truths of God in such a way as will be believed and cherished by our children so that they will “keep that which is committed to [their] trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called” (1 Timothy 6:20).

Certainly a more effective way of teaching is to continually point the child or student back to foundational principles rather than to list a set of dos and don’ts. We must teach those under our influence to be grounded in the Word so that they can make sound judgments when away from our watchful eyes. No greater aid to serious study, no better primer in careful reasoning exists than in Scripture. Using it and other supportive materials, a child can learn to think carefully and critically. Not only will they learn information, but here they can learn wisdom and knowledge and understanding. “For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding” (Proverbs 2:6). Joyce Meyer – Follow the Leader

 

My whole being follows hard after You and clings closely to You; Your right hand upholds me.

The psalmist David says in today’s scripture that his “whole being follows hard after” God and “clings closely” to Him. We can sense the intensity of David’s heart as he follows God, the only worthy leader we could have.

You may remember, as I do, playing a childhood game called Follow the Leader. If the leader was creative and fun and kept everyone moving at a good pace, the game was enjoyable.

If the leader was bossy, moved too fast, or was inclined to lead other children to do things that were too hard or dangerous, the game fell apart quickly. As we go through life, we get to choose which leader we will follow. We all reach a point where we must decide whether we will follow God or trust ourselves to lead our lives.

People who go through life with their own agendas—trying to set their own course, make their own plans, and run their own lives—often end up frustrated and unhappy. It’s not that their plans aren’t good; it’s that God’s plans are so much better.

When we follow God, we have a leader who moves at exactly the right pace and keeps life interesting for us. He also makes sure we miraculously end up just where we’re supposed to be, when we’re supposed to be there. Following God is a great adventure, and I hope you will embrace it today.

Prayer of the Day: God, I choose You as the leader of my life. Help me to follow hard after You with my whole being.

Putin’s Efforts to Subvert Armenia’s Elections Can Harm US Interests

Putin’s interference in Armenia’s 2026 election threatens peace, democracy, and U.S. strategic interests.

 

Americans know how consequential elections can be for both domestic and foreign policy. Likewise, Armenia’s upcoming parliamentary election on June 7 is critical to the future of the country, the Caucasus, and a major Trump Administration initiative, the Trump Road for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP). The stakes for Armenia could not be higher. This election will determine whether Armenia remains a Russian satellite advancing Moscow’s interests rather than its own, or becomes an independent, Westward-looking state approaching EU membership. A Westward trajectory serves the interests of both Armenia and America and would solidify one of the Trump Administration’s strategic achievements.

Naturally, Russia, which is already losing ground in both the Caucasus and Central Asia, is trying to subvert this election. Besides threatening that Armenia will suffer Ukraine’s fate if it continues growing closer to Europe, Moscow has organized influence operations that are standard fare coming from the Kremlin. Russia intervened in the U.S. 2016 and 2020 elections, as well as elections in SpainMoldovaRomaniaHungary, and Bulgaria. Russia also subsidizes the populist right-wing parties Alternative for Germany and National Rally in France.  So, the stakes in Armenia are enormous—war or peace, illiberalism or democracy.

A final peace settlement with Azerbaijan can only happen if Armenia’s new legislature, empowered by the June 7 elections, is able to address the necessary constitutional changes. Equally importantly, Armenia has begun serious negotiations with Brussels about entering the EU. In an historic first, Yerevan just hosted the May 4 meeting of the European Political Community (EPC), and on May 5, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa held the first-ever EU-Armenia summit, issuing a joint declaration.  The EU reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to further strengthening relations with Armenia and its long-term development by bringing Armenia and its people closer to the European Union.  The EU likewise supported Armenia’s willingness to align with the EU’s Acquis (membership requirements).

Sadly, this program of peace, Europeanization, and democracy is anathema to Russia and its partisans in Armenia. As a Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center paper aptly noted, “Russia Won’t Give Up Its Influence in Armenia Without a Fight.” In 2024-25, Moscow, working with Armenian revanchists, the Armenian church, and the opposition, was caught planning a coup. Such efforts to exploit domestic cleavages led by pro-Moscow oligarchs and Russian agents typify Moscow’s modus operandi.  The present intervention against Pashinyan’s government is part of a broader Russian strategy to maintain control over the South Caucasus and Armenia, protect the bridge to Iran, and derail emerging peace in the region.

Ocampo even boasted that he can exert pressure on EU Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen,  “and in that way tweak European policy,” working through the Spanish politician and former High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell. In the video of his leaked interview, Ocampo concludes, we’re getting onto a road that’s already been paved. We pile on more pressure, and I’m going to do it in combination with the Armenian lobby in the United States…I don’t have to break down the wall—the door is already open and we just push in.”

Perhaps the most important thing we know about Mary, the mother of Jesus, comes from her own words to the angel Gabriel when she was told of God’s plan for her.

First, she referred to herself as a “maidservant of the Lord.” This word could be translated as “servant,” “bondservant,” or “slave.” It carried with it the idea of compulsion or obligation—that is, a role that Mary wasn’t free to reject. How did Mary come to view herself as a young woman obligated to serve God with her life? We don’t know. But we do know that her commitment to God resulted in Gabriel referring to her as “highly favored” in God’s sight (Luke 1:28). Second was her response to Gabriel’s announcement: “Let it be to me according to your word.” Once she received the amazing explanation of how she, a virgin, could give birth to a baby (Luke 1:35), there was no hesitation, questioning, or debate. Mary simply said “Yes” to God.

When it comes to submitting to God, the fewer words the better. Only one word is truly necessary: Yes.

I used to work with a woman named Madge, who was an amazing cook. “You should taste my pea and ham soup!” she said one day. After replying that I really didn’t like peas, Madge smiled and said, “You will after you try my soup.” The next day she handed me a container of her soup, made especially for me.

“Did you try my soup?” Madge asked me a couple of days later. “I will—soon!” I said, hoping she wouldn’t ask me again. But she did—the next day, and the next. “Don’t leave it too long or it’ll spoil,” she added on the fourth day.

A week later, Madge’s uneaten soup had spoiled, and I threw it away. I felt dread as she approached me. “You did try my soup, didn’t you?” she asked.

“Yes,” I said. “It was . . .  delicious.”

In Ephesians 4, Paul calls us to deal with speech-related sins like angry words (v. 26), unwholesome talk (v. 29), and slander (v. 31). But before these comes a more basic call to “speak truthfully to your neighbor” (v. 25). I had looked at Madge and told her a lie. I knew what I needed to do.

I walked into Madge’s office, confessed my lie, and sheepishly asked for her forgiveness. Madge walked to me and gave me a hug. “Of course I forgive you,” she said. “How could I not, when I know how much God’s forgiven me?”

Reflect & Pray

How many sinful words or actions has God forgiven you for? How can that reminder help you forgive someone today, with the Holy Spirit’s strength?

Forgiving God, please enable me to forgive others.

Paul sets up these instructions in Ephesians 4:25-32 by reminding his readers what life was like without Christ: “You must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts” (vv. 17-18). Then he implicitly acknowledges how every believer in Jesus once lived that way: “You must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body” (v. 25). As we shed our old way of living, exchanging it for the new life in Christ, we’ll find it natural—even fulfilling—to “be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (v. 32).

Denison Forum – The new Babel: Reclaiming the image of God in a world of AI

 

Earlier this week, Pope Leo XIV presented his first encyclical: a letter from the pope to the Catholic Church and its leaders. The 42,300-word document, titled Magnifica Humanitas, or “Magnificent Humanity,” outlined his thoughts on technology—with a specific focus on artificial intelligence—and called for remembering the importance of people as we integrate it into our lives.

While the document was presented on Monday, it was actually signed on May 15 to mark the 135th anniversary of Rerum Novarum, an encyclical written by his namesake, Pope Leo XIII, in 1891 to provide Catholics with guidance amid the Industrial Revolution. The current pope sees AI as potentially having a similarly revolutionary impact on our world.

At the same time, his letter encourages Catholics and all “people of good will” to be wary of the potential impact artificial intelligence could have on our culture, without being fearful of the technology itself. In his view, the chief danger is far less dystopian than many of the books and movies featuring a future dominated by AI might suggest.

Rather than artificial intelligence conquering humanity on its way to taking over the world, Leo suggests a far greater risk is humanity giving up our position in God’s created order and elevating our own creation instead.

 I have worked harder, been put in prison more often, been whipped times without number, and faced death again and again. Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me thirty-nine lashes. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked. Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea. I have traveled on many long journeys. I have faced danger from rivers and from robbers. I have faced danger from my own people, the Jews, as well as from the Gentiles. I have faced danger in the cities, in the deserts, and on the seas. And I have faced danger from men who claim to be believers but are not. I have worked hard and long, enduring many sleepless nights. I have been hungry and thirsty and have often gone without food. I have shivered in the cold, without enough clothing to keep me warm.

Sometimes as believers we tend to be spiritual lightweights. At the first indication of a hardship or difficulty, we fall like a house of cards. We say, “I didn’t sign up for this. I don’t want difficulty; I just want to get along with everyone.”

But if you’re a true follower of Christ, there will be suffering in your life. The apostle Paul was certainly a true follower. And here’s how he described his experience: “I have worked harder, been put in prison more often, been whipped times without number, and faced death again and again. Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me thirty-nine lashes. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked. Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea. I have traveled on many long journeys. I have faced danger from rivers and from robbers. You’ll find no trace of self-pity or resentment in his words. Paul understood the role that suffering plays in the lives of believers.

The harsh reality is this: If you’re going to be used of God, then you’re going to be attacked. If you live as a real Christian, you will find yourself at odds with the world around you. You’ll face opposition, some of it intense. Think of suffering as a spiritual badge of honor. In fact, if you don’t experience at least occasional suffering or hardship in your life, you might want to examine your Christian walk.

And keep this in mind: The life that Christ offers is well worth any hardship.

Days of Praise – Man Must Repent

“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: there is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.” (Romans 3:10–11)

From the moment Adam and Eve disobeyed their Creator in the Garden, humanity has attempted to deflect conscious acceptance of guilt. Adam blamed God because “the woman” was given to him by the Creator. Eve blamed the serpent—and you and I have continued that reaction ever since.

That is precisely why repentance is a requirement for salvation. When Adam rebelled, the relationship between man and God was destroyed: “By the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation,” and “by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners” (Romans 5:18–19). All men have “no hope, and [are] without God in the world” (Ephesians 2:12).

The death that entered the world because of Adam (Romans 5:12) not only introduced physical death into the entire creation (Romans 8:22) but a spiritual separation from the life of God, as well. “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14). For millennia God bore man’s ignorance of what God was going to do through Christ Jesus at Calvary by faith in the promise of the coming “Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent” (Acts 17:30).

Each of us must change our mind and admit we are sinful and desperately need God’s gracious forgiveness, praying, “God be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13). HMM III

Joyce Meyer – Worship Before You Ask

 

And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.”

Matthew 8:2 (ESV)

Sometimes, people read today’s scripture and skip over its most important part. They first focus on the fact that the man had leprosy, a terrible disease that would have taken a miracle to cure. Then they turn their attention to his question and wonder if Jesus will be willing to heal him. We also need to pay attention to the fact that the man “knelt before him.”

The fact that he knelt before Jesus reveals the condition of his heart. He was humble in the presence of the Lord, and he worshipped and honored Him before he asked Him for a miracle.

When we need something from God, we can easily become so focused on our situation that we completely overlook the importance of worshipping and honoring God. We jump straight into talking about what we need from Him and forget to thank Him for who He is.

No matter what you need today—whether it’s something minor or something major—God can help you. But before you ask Him to do anything for you, take time to praise, worship, and honor Him for who He is.

Prayer of the Day: Father, help me to worship You before I ever ask You to do anything for me. In Jesus’ name amen.

Read Numbers 34–35

sanctuary is often defined as a sacred place. Some church members will refer to the worship building or the area around the altar as the sanctuary. But the word has also been defined as a place of safety, a refuge for someone seeking protection.

One of those original meanings for the word sanctuary appears in Numbers 34–35, where God establishes both territorial boundaries and cities of refuge for His people as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. Numbers 34 meticulously outlines Israel’s borders. These were divine borders, defining where God’s people belonged. The detailed tribal allotments ensured every family had their place in the covenant community. But God’s justice system required more than territorial boundaries—it needed places where mercy could operate alongside justice. God commanded Moses: “Select some towns to be your cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone accidentally may flee” (35:11). This wasn’t about protecting criminals but ensuring justice for those who unintentionally caused death.

The cities of refuge provided crucial protection: “They will be places of refuge from the avenger, so that anyone accused of murder may not die before they stand trial before the assembly” (35:12). Six cities—three on each side of the Jordan—offered sanctuary until proper investigation could determine guilt or innocence.

These cities represented God’s heart for both justice and mercy. The guilty faced consequences, but the innocent received protection. The high priest’s death would eventually free even those guilty of accidental killing (35:25), pointing toward ultimate redemption. In Jesus, we see the ultimate fulfillment of this idea. He becomes our refuge, not just from earthly consequences but from the judgment our sins deserve.

For years, “cyber apocalypse” talk sounded like the tech version of a guy on a street corner holding a cardboard sign predicting the end times. Y2K came and went with barely a flicker. The Mayan calendar became a punchline. Even most ransomware attacks, destructive as they’ve been, still operated within recognizable rules. Servers go down. Companies panic. Bitcoin wallets light up. Insurance adjusters start chain-smoking.

Q-Day is different. Not because it’s flashy. Because it’s boringly mathematical. And math always wins. The term “Q-Day” refers to the moment quantum computers become powerful enough to crack the encryption that currently protects virtually everything in modern civilization: banking systems, military communications, corporate intellectual property, classified government files, satellite systems, supply chains, cloud infrastructure, medical databases, and the tiny little authentication handshake your phone quietly performs a thousand times a day without you noticing. Experts increasingly believe the timeline is accelerating dramatically.

The public still hears “quantum computing” and imagines some glowing sci-fi cube floating in a laboratory while a guy in a turtleneck explains particles. Meanwhile, cybersecurity professionals are staring at this development the way meteorologists stare at a Category 5 hurricane forming offshore. Because here’s the ugly part nobody wants to say out loud: many organizations aren’t remotely prepared for what comes after the encryption era.

A shocking number of businesses still treat cybersecurity like a compliance chore instead of a survival function. They’ll spend millions on branding consultants, executive retreats, and office espresso machines that look like they belong on a Formula One car, then leave sensitive intellectual property sitting behind outdated endpoint protection and legacy encryption standards that are aging like unrefrigerated milk.

Right now, criminal groups and hostile nation-states are already harvesting encrypted data with the intention of decrypting it later once quantum capabilities mature. The phrase in security circles is “harvest now, decrypt later.” Translation: your stolen secrets may already be sitting in somebody’s vault waiting for the locks to become obsolete.

That means Q-Day isn’t really one day. It’s a countdown. And a lot of executives are acting like the clock is decorative. The fantasy some companies cling to is that governments will somehow protect them when things get ugly. They won’t. Or more accurately, they can’t. Governments can barely protect themselves.

If quantum decryption capabilities emerge in the hands of a geopolitical adversary before adequate post-quantum migration occurs, the implications for national security become almost surreal.

Global stability depends heavily on trust in secure communications. Remove that trust and things get dangerous fast. Imagine a world where state actors can silently access decades of intercepted encrypted traffic. Trade negotiations. Defense contracts. Intelligence briefings. Corporate mergers. Energy infrastructure schematics. Proprietary AI models. Pharmaceutical formulas. Political backchannels. Every nation on earth suddenly starts wondering what everybody else already knows.

That’s not a cybersecurity problem anymore. That’s a geopolitical pressure cooker. Which is why the recent summit between the United States and China should have sparked far louder conversations about further modernizing the aging 1979 science and technology agreement between the two countries. Back then, technological cooperation meant something entirely different. Today, the stakes involve quantum supremacy, AI dominance, semiconductor warfare, cyber espionage, and infrastructure resilience.

And while governments posture and negotiate, private industry remains exposed in ways many CEOs still don’t fully appreciate. The average business owner thinks cyber threats look like hoodie-wearing hackers typing furiously in a dark room while green code scrolls down a screen. In reality, some of the most effective attacks remain embarrassingly simple. Panic scams built around the threat of file deletion still trick ordinary users every day. Stealer malware like Remus quietly siphons browser credentials, crypto wallets, saved passwords, session tokens, and proprietary company access with alarming efficiency in the current pre-quantum environment. Criminals don’t need futuristic quantum capabilities to wreck companies today. They’re already doing fine with conventional tools.

That’s why the comparisons to Y2K completely miss the mark. Y2K was a software bug with a known date and a fixable engineering problem. Q-Day is an arms race involving physics, nation-states, intelligence agencies, organized cybercrime, and infrastructure that takes years to migrate safely. Many enterprises still haven’t even completed a full inventory of where vulnerable cryptographic systems exist inside their own environments.

And the timelines are tightening. Some projections now place cryptographically relevant quantum systems arriving far sooner than originally expected, possibly within the next decade.

The scary part isn’t that the world ends overnight. It’s that the institutions people assume are stable suddenly look fragile. Banks. Governments. Defense systems. Telecommunications. Healthcare networks. Supply chains. Cloud providers. Every layer of modern life depends on encryption so deeply that most people never even think about it. Until it stops working.

Cybersecurity people have a phrase they use when discussing catastrophic failures: “silent compromise.” That may ultimately define the prelude to Q-Day. Not explosions. Not blackouts. Not movie-style chaos. Just stolen secrets, invisible breaches, and adversaries reading things they were never supposed to read while the rest of the world continues refreshing email and pretending everything is normal.

Civility in an uncivil age: Why polite rhetoric cannot reform a corrupt system

The problem with pearl-clutching …

In a recent op-ed excerpt from his forthcoming book, former Vice President Mike Pence made a familiar plea: “the next generation of conservative leaders must embrace civility.”

Democracy, he argues, depends on “heavy doses” of it, avoiding personal attacks, modeling restraint, and pursuing principled compromise.

Pence’s call echoes a longstanding strain of institutionalist conservatism that values decorum and process above all.

Yet in the current political and cultural climate, this vision feels not just aspirational but dangerously detached from reality.

I argued during President Trump’s first term in “The Trump Administration’s Disruptive Reform of Political Communication,” that traditional political discourse had become a genteel game that preserved a corrupt status quo. The old rules, polite euphemisms, carefully calibrated rhetoric, and refusal to name enemies plainly, rewarded stasis. They allowed entrenched interests in Washington, the media, academia, and the permanent bureaucracy to maintain power while ordinary Americans watched their borders dissolve, their jobs shipped overseas, their culture eroded, and their children’s futures mortgaged.

Trump’s breakthrough was not just bluster; it was a necessary disruption that reframed communication as a tool for reform rather than ritualistic preservation of elite norms. Conforming once again to those old conventions today would signal surrender, not strength.

Verbal civility and measured debate are luxuries afforded by functional systems operating in good faith. When the stakes involve systemic betrayal on a massive scale, they are meaningless instruments of defeat.

Consider the evidence all around us.

We have witnessed open and organized resistance to law enforcement, the threat of eliminating law enforcement altogether through “defunding police,” violent protests that obstruct and risk the lives of ordinary citizens (every street obstructed by protesters risks the life, health, or safety of a person awaiting emergency services), and riots that destroy communities, only for political leaders and media allies to excuse or minimize the destruction while taxpayers foot the bill for rebuilding.

Billions wasted on corrupt boondoggles line the pockets of insiders with no real consequences. Endless ill-conceived policies, whether green energy fantasies, open borders, or regulatory strangulation sacrifice American jobs and futures while their architects face neither political reckoning nor legal accountability.  Prosecutors and judges repeatedly return violent and dangerous criminals to the street and shrug at the predictable carnage.

Nowhere is the righteous indignation more justified and evident than in the battles over our children.

Across school board hearings nationwide, parents have voiced raw outrage at teachers and administrators who betray their trust by facilitating social transitions of minors without parental knowledge or consent. Academia repeatedly surrenders our youth to incompetent, ill-conceived, or indoctrinating programs and practices that leave them vulnerable, broken, and incapable while blaming parents for “teacher’s” hurdles. Young girls are forced to compete against biological males in sports, their dreams crushed and their voices silenced by accusations of “hate” for stating biological reality.

This is not policy disagreement; it is a profound moral violation that strikes at the heart of family, community, epistemic cohesion, and fundamental fairness.

The bureaucratic cruelty is on display in places like California. Los Angeles, under Mayor Karen Bass, provides another stark example. After California failed to competently prevent or prepare to fight devastating wildfires, its leaders heap insult and political castration on injury with years of bureaucratic obstruction.

Citizens who lost everything are prevented from demolishing ruins and rebuilding homes, despite the pleas from a sitting president to slash red tape, and they even tried to prevent them from voting if they had to move away temporarily and didn’t file the right paperwork.

Whether directed at the president or the poor citizen, the lesson is one of power politics.  “You don’t have the power, and you can’t make us.”

A whole party deploys the power dynamics of an elementary school playground, with similar results.   A political system riddled with corruption that impairs basic governance demands more than gentle words. Polite petitions have repeatedly failed. Blunt exposure of failure is required.

We are still learning how deep is the rot caused by decades of appeals to identity and “truth to power” politics to corruptly achieve and retain power.

Only recently we learned that institutions like the Southern Poverty Law Center,  which weaponized “hate” labels to smear dissenters, actually paid to perpetuate the hate it ostensibly opposes. In Minnesota, social services were managed with patterns of willful ignorance or worse, risking harm to vulnerable children and families through wanton misuse of resources.  All accomplished under the watch of those in power.

These aren’t isolated missteps but symptoms of a cesspool too wide and too deep for civility to bridge.  Some wrongs are so fundamental that responding with mere civility minimizes the scope of the damage and risks admitting defeat. Some betrayals cannot be condemned politely. When one side has abandoned reason, civilized norms, and the pursuit of any common good beyond retention of raw power, “heavy doses of civility” function as unilateral disarmament.

The Democrat party’s trajectory, prioritizing power over governance, identity hierarchies over equality, and institutional capture over reasoned debate, has so betrayed the interests of working and investing Americans that traditional debate is obsolete. They do not seek compromise; they seek conquest of the culture and permanent dominance.

“Hell No!” is the gentlest possible rebuttal.

The political and cultural war we face requires realism and strength. Conservatives must prioritize the best interests of U.S. citizens through secure borders, secure elections, economic opportunity, parental rights, rule of law, and national sovereignty, over performative decorum that the other side exploits.

Trump’s disruptive style proved that bold, unfiltered communication can break through institutional inertia, and contrived conventional wisdom and reconnect politics with the people. His governance has been real rather than performative, offering actual solutions rather than excuses and blame The next generation of leaders should not retreat to the comfortable rhetoric or timid governance of yesterday. They must confront systemic corruption head-on, with the clarity and urgency the moment demands. In an age this uncivil, only truthful disruption offers a path to genuine reform.

Far too many churches and denominations have been founded for reasons that were less than loving. Yet Jesus told His disciples that love among Christians would be the hallmark of those who follow Him. He gave His disciples a new name—He called them friends rather than servants. And a new command: As friends, they were to love one another.

If all followers of Jesus are His friends, that makes all followers of Jesus friends with one another. As mutual friends, love for one another is to be what separates Christians from the world. So serious was Jesus about love for one other that He said it would require laying down one’s life for one’s friends—which is what He did for His friends (John 15:13). Do you have a friend who would lay down his or her life for you? Are you the kind of friend who would lay down your life? “Friend” is a covenant term in Scripture (James 2:23). Under the old covenant, a true friend was closer than a blood brother (Proverbs 18:24).

Be the kind of friend you would like to have and show the world that you are a friend of Jesus.

Today’s Devotion

As a little girl, I got so excited when I’d see special signs appear on the side of the road. I thought colorful signs meant my family had arrived at the popular amusement park we were driving to. I’d joyfully start gathering my things, only to be disappointed to see more signs and have to wait even longer before we reached the park. Eventually I realized those signs announced that visitors were getting closer but were still miles away.

Like an excited child wondering “are we there yet?” we can also be impatient and anxious to arrive at our next destination.

Waiting for God to move in our lives, or to rescue us from our trials, can be challenging. David was facing much adversity, which he mentions throughout Psalm 27. Yet he still placed his hope and trust in God and waited for Him to respond. David didn’t know how long it would take for God to act, but he knew God would help him. “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living” (v. 13).

It may take longer than we’d like to experience our breakthrough, but let’s take courage in these words: “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord” (v. 14). As we turn to the Psalms and the rest of Scripture for encouragement, we can take comfort in knowing God is working even while we wait.

Today’s Insights

When pursued by powerful enemies, David focused on God instead of the danger he was in. With God as his “light” and “salvation” and the “stronghold of [his] life,” he had nothing to fear (Psalm 27:1-3). God would keep him safe—“out of reach on a high rock” (v. 5 nlt). Even in the unlikely event of being abandoned by his parents, who were supposed to protect him, David confidently trusted that “the Lord will take care of me” (v. 10 nkjv). God would deal with the difficulties and dangers just as a human father would for his child. The psalmist invites us to “be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord” (v. 14). To wait for God is to put our trust in Him. We affirm with David, “We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield” (33:20).

Why Housing First is the most Christ-like response to homelessness

On June 1st, the Trump Administration is changing how homelessness-reduction initiatives are funded. According to an official statement, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is reversing the “status quo of ‘housing first’ and ‘harm reduction,’” arguing that those approaches “have failed at great cost to those suffering on our streets and to working American taxpayers.” Instead, the administration is prioritizing treatment-focused responses aimed at addressing addiction and mental illness.

On its surface, that sounds compassionate. Addiction should be treated. Mental illness should be taken seriously. Christians, of all people, should care deeply about helping people heal.

Yet the new funding requirements misunderstand both the causes of homelessness and the conditions people need in order to recover.

The National Alliance to End Homelessness defines Housing First as an approach that “does not require people experiencing homelessness to address the all of their problems including behavioral health problems, or to graduate through a series of services programs before they can access housing.” This approach is founded on the belief that “people need basic necessities like food and a place to live before attending to anything less critical.”

 So we are always confident, even though we know that as long as we live in these bodies we are not at home with the Lord. For we live by believing and not by seeing. Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord. So whether we are here in this body or away from this body, our goal is to please him.

2 Corinthians 5:6–9 

What happens to us as believers when we die? We go straight into the presence of God. The apostle Paul wrote that when we are “away from these earthly bodies . . . then we will be at home with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8 NLT). There’s no waiting period or shipping delays. The moment our time on earth ends, our time in God’s presence begins.

That’s why Paul wrote, “For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better. But if I live, I can do more fruitful work for Christ. So I really don’t know which is better. I’m torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me. But for your sakes, it is better that I continue to live” (Philippians 1:21–24 NLT). He wanted to continue his work on earth, but the thought of Heaven was irresistible.

When Stephen was being martyred for his faith, he was given a glimpse of glory, which he then described to the people who were putting him to death. “But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand. And he told them, ‘Look, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand!’” (Acts 7:55–56 NLT).

According to Acts 6:15, “Everyone in the high council stared at Stephen, because his face became as bright as an angel’s” (NLT). Because Stephen was seeing the other side, his face radiated God’s glory.

When the great evangelist D. L. Moody was on his deathbed, his last words were, “Is this dying? Why, this is bliss. There is no valley. I have been within the gates. Earth is receding; Heaven is opening; God is calling; I must go.” After saying this, Moody soon breathed his last breath and passed into eternity.

It comforts me to think that when my son Christopher left this world, he was carried by angels into God’s presence. I believe that with all my heart. And I believe that’s true of all Christians when their lives on earth come to an end.

When we leave this world, we’ll be carried by angels into the presence of the Lord, where we’ll stay forever, filled with utter peace, fulfillment, joy, and awe. If we, too, could see how glorious Heaven is, I’m sure that it would change everything about how we view death.

Enjoy this life while you can but never lose sight of what lies beyond it.
